I agree except I think Macrae is the Crouch replacement. For Battle, we are left with a hole that will have to be filled, but we have a few possibilities.

As I said at the start, we really didn’t have a choice.

Responding to other posters here,

1) I’ve never doubted the Sharman class and potential and I’ve always been a big fan, but I was a bit disappointed. I think part of it was seeing him as defender, then dropped, then sub, and then popping up and no and again. Putting aside that brilliant finish to 2021, when he came out of nowhere for five great games, he’s lining up for his fourth full season after 10-16-18 games, more than a couple have been sub.
2) I don’t understand people saying ‘second half of the season’ for Membrey and being good. If Round 20 signals the second half of the season, well and good. I think Philipou’s increased output helped. Frankly, St Kilda were done and dusted by then. I think we should all take a hard look at the Adelaide game preceeding that, and see where we will be better.

It’s a great example because,

1) Adelaide in Adelaide is our first shoot out of the season
2) Sharman kicked a couple and, Phillipou did plenty too, and NAS was the best
3) Hill was out due to personal reasons and our forward entries were low
4) we got off to a good start and fell away..Members was very disappointing and had plenty of game time
5) being Round 19, it is well and truly second half of the season
6) Battle was 89% on the ground
7) Wilkie only 3 marks and 14 possies
8) Butler and Higgins combined score output = one behind.

now the following week we played West Coast, down in the dumps and missing key players. We cleaned up, and Memebers kicked five. But did we play a virtual seconds team?

I reckon McLennan could do Battle's role. He's probably better than Ari defensively and good in the air. Height doesn't matter as much in the third tall interceptor role. Sicily and Tom Stewart are around his size.

Just caught the end of a SEN discussion of how Saints have treated Paddy Dow in comparison to Demons with Petracca?

According to a Josh Gabelich article apparently. Can anyone enlighten me and/or post the article please?

Doesn't look like Sharman started as sub much, was he playing in defence earlier in the year?
From game 17 his scores were:
17: 1, -
18: 2, -
19: 2, -
20: 2, 1
21: 3, -
22: 0, 1
23: 2, -
24: 2, -
25: 0, 2 ( Was he trying to get us a better draft pick )?

Average : 1.55 , 0.22

Membrey had a run averaging 2.3, thanks to his bag of 5 against West Coast.

When David Armitage had his bad infection ( caused by bacteria in the playing surface getting into a gash in his knee ) , he was back playing after 9 weeks of footy.
It makes sense to be conservative and monitor closely though, don't want it re-occuring.
I didn't realise the extent that Nick Haynes has been struggling with infections.

PLAYERS WHO IMPRESSED

Harry Boyd: He’s only just officially signed, but Boyd played exclusively ruck for the stronger side and had his way with it. Mainly opposed to Dodson, Boyd fed his rotating midfielders, with a clean tap to Phillipou who burst through the centre square and hit the leading Mitch Owens on the chest a sign of things to come. Marshall did not play, but it is expected he spends more time forward in 2025 to help Max King in attack, giving Boyd a serious chance for a big first season.

Angus Hastie: The second-year defender managed five games in his debut campaign, but Hastie patrolled the half back line and was often the choice distributor by foot. While there was the rare blunder, Hastie was often poised in traffic and found a target, starting attacking thrusts for the stronger side. However, he was stationed in the weaker side’s defence, indicating it is still a battle for the second year defender to get consistent games.

James Barrat: Playing down back for the weaker side, Barrat’s competitive attitude shone through, rarely beaten in the air and following it up well on the ground. Barrat was drafted as a swingman, but did not spend any time up forward, but his use by foot was impressive for a key position player.

What about this idea?
Centre-half back and Josh Battle replacement AND more!!

Enter

Mr Boyd

Who said this?

“Position wise, I see myself as a key defender who can pinch-hit in the ruck, however, I’m happy to play wherever the team needs me”

  • Phillipou played in the guts and looked great
  • No sign of Marshall (and unsurprisingly Dow)
  • Boyd took on Dodson, Heath and Sharman(!) in the ruck
  • Steele vs Macrae was a good contest
  • Travaglia played on Hill, looked good but got caught out by experience
  • Tauru and Hunter Clark ran laps together in rehab group
  • Also rehab running were Henry and Collard
No mention of Max Hall..one of the most creative and influential in match sim

saintmike65....I was just about to post exactly that comment.

Your way too quick for me....as usual !!!!!!!

Actually....I will post re Max Hall.......impressive today....again.

That was 4 years ago
He played CHB for Werribee and being just 198cm, I kinda think I like the idea.

—-if he has the speed!

Ben McEvoy
Stefan Martin
Leigh Brown
Jordan Roughead
Mark Blicavs
Sam De Koning

..and the great Shane Grambeau of course…

Players who have rucked and played back.

Even Paddy Ryder at Essendon!

It isn’t common, or as common as the ruck-forward thing. A reddit poster said that the thing for the key defender is to have the intuition to know where to stand.

I also read this, and it sounds like burst speed is a must.

Zero Hanger suggested he could ‘even be used behind the ball’
And others here and there say he’s too short for ruck in AFL ..

Just an idea…I’m never short of em good and bad happy and sad

Its easy enough for a ruck to drift back Ben McEvoy style.
But for a key defender to fill in for a resting ruck is much harder.
Imagine that Dougal is manning up Ben McKay , then just leaves him free to do the ruckwork.
