Can't form a conclusion on this guy. Showed a little bit vs pies but he's in his 7th AFL year and it's still hard to work out if he's a strong, reliable mark and quick distributor - or the opposite. His Round 1 status if uninjured will reveal some of rhe coaches thinking.

The more I watch of this guy the more I think he’s going to end up a bust.

He’s been in the system for a while now and just doesn’t seem to get it.

His off the ball work really worries me, he must not understand leading patterns or know how to coordinate as part of a system.

The amount of times I have seen him get in Larkey’s way is incredible for a bloke that has been in the system long enough to be doing less of that.

I think he could actually be a good player if he had some football smarts, but he really hasn’t shown that to date.

Let’s hope he proves me wrong this year, we need everyone to improve.

I expect him to play plenty this year

He’s the chf that pinch hits ruck

Think sellers is too small to pinch hit so isn’t competing for this spot directly (would need us to change to a 3 tall setup which we won’t do as we have zurhaar as that hybrid third)

Maley is the main competition for that CCJ spot but is raw

Where's my post about his dog dying or his mrs cheating on him to get him to play with purpose
Was it Capuano who Denis had to abuse the s**t out of before a game so he would run out angry and play well?
Not giving us enough.
Another who needs to play angry and on emotion to contribute.
My issue with CCJ is unless he plays with aggression he is absolutely useless.
CCJ needs to be told his mrs cheated on him or his best mates in hospital, bloody anything to get the blood boiling. I played my senior footy the same tbf and its why I have a desk job now. But the point stands if he doesnt click into gear (I doubt he will) he will be on a trade site or sitting behind a desk in 12 months too.

It was so much easier to motivate players during the Scott era.

He could just close his prematch addresses with "Melbourne median unit price just dropped 0.3 % boys" and they'd go out breathing fire.

He seemed to cover the ground better, looked more mobile, albeit from a base that makes a gum tree look dashing. He gave off at least one slick handball and was ok aerially. Look he’s gonna be solid at best but I have always thought and still think that there’s a useful enough role player in there. He’s also big enough to really hurt people but how to tap into that aggression is the thing…

Obviously I’m in the minority, but I thought he was serviceable against the Pies. We don’t need him to be a star. We need him to:

  • Provide a decoy for Larkey
  • Take a few marks up the ground that helps us link up
  • Compete in the ruck for 5 minutes whilst X rests
  • Kick 1-2 goals

He did this, which is a tick for me. Should improve with continuity which he has not had.

I’m not writing CJ off but his mobility is a concern & when he doesn’t mark the footy he becomes a bit of a liability.

That said, he has an important role to play this year to support Larkey.

If he can cover some distance from across the wings as we are coming out of defence, take a mark and then execute a good handball to a fleet footed hbf, then that’s only a good thing. A tall doing this a couple of times will also open things up in the corridor as they look to cover it.
He doesn’t need to be up forward all the time.

He needs to somehow find a way to get to contests. Put the marking power to good use and then run back and provide something inside forward 50.

Can't help but think if he was at Richmond today and we were looking at him, we wouldn't bother signing him. A couple of short years and his type is now almost completely obsolete, regardless of the good moments
