Respectfully, I disagree. Hird was a great captain, and he did indeed lift the team and himself individually when needed, but I think Jobe's man-management was better. Jobe seemed to have a lot more one-on-one conversations with players to encourage them. Both players were also excellent in the media, but Jobe really, (and sadly), shone during the saga. He was the face of the Club and carried an incredible burden with aplomb.

From afar, Heppell is different to both. I get the impression that he is a far cruisier personality, but is incredibly driven. I do think he is natural leader but may not reach the Captaincy heights of the others - Hird because of his generational playing ability and Jobe, (because god forbid it happens again), weathered a horrible storm and wouldn't let the ship sink.

Lets agree to disagree. Hird had many stars around him but when a game was on the line, 9 times out of 10 it was him that got us over it.

I take nothing away from Jobe but Hird was better

Has been flying under the radar in the last few weeks, with his quasi-tagging role, on the opposition's best midfielder - Let off the leash tonight.

Well worth listening to if you get a chance.

Essendon Captain Dyson Heppell is the special guest on this week's edition of Bomber Radio.

Heppell has played every match so far this season and is ranked in the top five at the Club for disposals, tackles, inside 50s, clearances, contested possessions and uncontested possessions.

He talks about his form, the team's progress, who he turns to for leadership advice, pushing some younger teammates to become the best, the key role the experienced Dons are playing in the VFL and this Friday's big clash against the Swans.

That and much more is on a bumper edition of Bomber Radio.

Talks about challenging Zachy Merrett to be the best player in the comp and BigJoey to kick 100 one day. I guess that's a future Brownlow and a future Coleman medallist, not bad aspirations.

Also talks about the dreadlocks (they're definitely not going anywhere until they have to)... you have to hear it hahaha.

Hasn't stepped up in captaincy like Jobe did. Maybe Jobe should have done one more year. I'm sure he'll come good though.

Is he being tagged out of games?

Wasn't tagged, just went head to head and got absolutely smashed. Got the majority of his touches as cheapies in the backline.

He was awful, but lets not get carried away, he was among our bests in our last game. Lets hope it was an isolated case and he uses this as motivation for the rest of the season.

Form is fluctuating alot which might be frustrating to him since he used to be quite consistent.

Maybe its the on field responsibility making him lose focus at times. Im sure he will learn to manage it better with more experience and time in the role.

Or just a form slump or slight injury.
He will bounce back

This was by far his worst game on paper, but I don't think it was from lack of trying. I think he was just well-beaten by his opponent on the night, and in a deficient midfield there isn't a lot to back you up when that happens.

Of course it wasn't for lack of trying. He's a professional footballer on $800k a year, who is the captain of our club, of course he was trying. But who cares if he was trying??? It's about performance, not trying. Trying doesn't get you 4 points

What I'm saying is that while he should have been better, I don't think Heppell going at 100% would've beaten Sydney's midfield tonight. Our midfield, as a unit, was beaten.

Just isn't big enough to be the contested beast we want him to be. He'll never be quick, so putting on another 5kg minimum just in bulk to build up the core strength is essential.

I thought he was ok. Not brilliant in the clinches but occasionally seemed to sweep across half-back every now and then in general play and intercept.

Can anyone provide quarter by quarter stats from each game for him?

Mainly just disposals (kicks/handballs)
I can't split handballs and kicks, but I can get some semblance of quarterly breakdown from the heat maps, which was 8, 6, 6 and 3 for 24 possessions overall (one isn't on the heat maps). About a third inside the centre square, the rest are pretty much all on the wings and never closer than 45m from either goal.

Sometimes I thought he got the ball more until I realised it was Parish.
Same shade of blonde.

I gotta remember that Hepp's a left foot kick and Parish is a right foot kick.

Good game skip.
