Felt like Hepp got the yips a little there for a while. A couple of silly things. Gifted Saints a goal, missed a set shot and something else... a throw? ...all in a short space of time. 26 disposals but only laid 1 tackle.
Dropped the lip a bit too....

Is a bit off this year. Missing something. Might just be the added role of being captain which doesnt let him to do his own thing as much, but besides from a couple of games he hasnt really had the impact on games he used to. You can just tell he's a great leader though, looks like the boys respect him massively

Was coming in to say something similar. Hasn't had a very impressive season. Definitely solid, but far from his Brownlow contending best 2-3 years back. Hopefully his best comes soon.

He actually could have had a great game vs Saints. He got into dangerous places including two marks inside 50 but unfortunately his disposal and decision making was way off. The start of that 3rd quarter was a disaster. It felt like every ball he touched was the only thing stopping us from scoring.

I'm not too concerned. His effort was there and he was finding the ball. The rest will come together.

Hasn't been great this year on return according to KB. Seriously, how does that old dumb campaigner still have a job in any capacity. Needs to be put in a home.
He probably hasn't been great. Solid would be how I would describe his year so far.

I think this year is a bit of a monster year for him. Coming back from a year of suspension you'd expect a bit of inconsistency, but it actually hasn't been too bad consistency wise, it's just that he's not smashing it out of the park either. And then he has the added pressure of being the full-time captain as well, which he needs to learn how to be comfortable in.

All things considered okayish or solid is probably fair, and not necessarily a bad thing given the circumstances.

He's doing his job to a good standard which is all you would expect.

A couple of seasons ago he was probably our second best player and now he's probably our 5th or 6th best.

That's not a bad thing. Just means we are adding more depth to our squad.

By the way Lore, do you keep track of score involvements on any of your sheets?

wow, seems the expectations for Heppell must be sky high if people think he hasn't been good this year.

You drunk BigFooty?

If you'd asked me preseason if I'd be happy with what he's done this year I would have taken it in a heartbeat and been thrilled about it

Score involvements are a premium stat so they take more work to track. I don't keep them in my spreadsheets coz it's easier to get i50s, GAs, goals and behinds haha. The AFL app has a page for that stat that's easy enough to operate though;

You gonna go all David Myers on us again Lance? I think we're comparing him to what we know him to be capable of. Heppell's 'solid form' is still top 5 at the club :p

I was actually just curious about Merretts score involvements actually. His average of 6.2 a game confirms my suspicions to a degree. Its high in comparison to the other guys around that mark considering he plays a great deal back of centre and the others are predominately forward of centre players.

Thank-you.

I think Heppell has been reliable without being brilliant at any particular point past the Hawks game.

He runs hard to make an option and gets involved, but he doesn't use it especially well and isn't really dominating the contest, so he looks like he isn't having as big an impact, but he is still a vital cog.

and I was right on Myers too ;)

Basically referring to quotes like these:

Is a bit off this year. Missing something.
Hasn't had a very impressive season. Solid
He probably hasn't been great. Solid would be how I would describe his year so far.
He's been ok,nothing more.

and making the very reasonable point that if people think this is not impressive, just ok, or solid or whatever then they are holding him to mighty high expectations.

It's typical Footy Supporter Goldfish memory. You watch, he'll have a top notch game (as he has done many times this year) and people will say how awesome he is and how he's back to his best.

You know, kind of like this:

Has been said plenty of times but he's ridiculously composed.

Never over complicates matters.

Cheers Richmond and Brisbane.
Almost the best game he has ever played for the club, captaincy agrees with him
Gee that Brownlow's gonna look good draped around his neck.
Has won flags as captain throughout his junior years why would he stop now??

He's a bonafide star!!!
What a game, skipper, bonefide star.

Not damaging enough?

Pfft..

He's been a touch more inconsistent than we'd hope for - kind of exactly what you might expect after a year off, but to say he's been "just solid" is a sign that clearly expectations are way off the chart, like I said

Their is no wrong and right its just an opinion.

Myers is playing a role and so is Heppell.

It's pleasing for me that the responsibility has been taken away from him and Jobe to get us over the line. It means we have depth and new leaders.

That is a good sign.

there is no wrong or right but there is a capacity to lift the eyes and judge people on full seasons. I totally agree with your post here, and literally all I'm saying is that Heppell must have high expectations attached, and that's a good thing.

I think we have different definitions of 'solid' haha.

'Okay' footy is not something you get dropped for. It's not his absolute ripping best, but it's certainly not bad.
'Solid' is stable, as far as I'm concerned that means consistent.

So to say he is okayish or solid is to say that he's playing consistently at or above the minimum standard we've come to expect of him. He's not playing career best footy, certainly not week in and week out the way Hurls has been, but he's still a great player and one of the best we have, which is nothing to sneeze at.

If I said Jackson Merrett was playing solid footy, the benchmark would be considerably lower - consistently in approximately the top 30% of the VFL team.

I would say solid is a fair description on his year. He hasn't hit the heights we know he can hit but I am confident he will get back there. Also, the term solid isn't relevant to expectations, he's been solid in comparison to what we know he can achieve, not what he was expected to achieve this year. I've been very happy with his year.
