Re: Dyson Heppell

How does he fare in one on one marking situations? For me, that is a pretty critical part, especially at Essendon, as we often find ourselves one on one in defense.

Most descriptions I've read of Heppell mention thats his great overhead, not sure if that equates to great one on one but he seems to be a good overall mark.

Recruited from the Gippsland Power, Heppell is a skilful left-footed medium defender with a penetrating kick, strength overhead and clean hands.

Heppell singlehandedly dragged his team over the line with 40 possessions, 12 handball receives, nine clearances and 11 inside 50s as the Power won a thriller 14.20. (103) to 14.9 (93).

Heppell’s ball use and his ability to win the ball on the ground (nine hardball gets) and in the air (eight marks) will more than likely stamp him as a potential first round draft pick.

Id say it would, I mean, what else could 'strength overhead' refer to? He grips the ball really hard when he marks it? Or maybe he has a Zaka like iron grip on the ball.

Hopefully a new gameplan should mean a bit less of that

That, or we have an insanely good defence that can deal with it.

Re: Dyson Heppell

You guys did very well here. I am still a little shattered we didn't take him at 6, but I am happy with Conca. Conca however imo will be a decent player to support Cotch, martin, Deledio, Foley....however I think Heppell could be a STARRRRR.

Don't be shattered mate, you drafted what you needed. You've already got three stars in Cotch, Martin and Deledio.

Re: Dyson Heppell

Double boner, Aussies win in Hobart and Heppell is awesome.
15 in the beep seems VERY good.
I knew you lot had two heads but had always assumed the one on the shoulders.

The one thing that seems to regularly standout in a lot of reports (Humble Minion's been raving about this kid for months before he was any chance for our pick) is not his marking, kicking or whatever: it's this ability to lift the side & drag them over the line even without a lot of support. To just do what's needed.

If - and it's a big if - he can translate that to AFL, he will be one of the very best kids from his year.

Sounds like what Jimmy used to do... We can only hope

Re: Dyson Heppell

Going to go out on a limb and predict that if he does not have injuries he will play this year and will play 200 games.
Not sure about kelvins dream of him being Joel Sellwood but i believe he will be very good.

Re: Dyson Heppell

Where do you see him playing, Ant?

Is he genuinely going to play midfield, or do you feel that was just the club being "optimistic", and that he'll be a Myers type HBF/midfielder?

Also, if you had to compare him to any player..

Drummond?
Hodge?
Griffen (with a better kick)?

Re: Dyson Heppell

To answer the question posted earlier - Heppell is very good in one on one situations. It is more to do with reading the ball better and positioning himself, as opposed to pure strength.

Re: Dyson Heppell

C'mon NAB cup, i wanna see this kid play!!!

Im hoping a Hodge comparison is the one, would love him to play like that :D

He reminds me of Birchall. Don't know why people are obssesed with always comparing up and comers to the absolute stars.

Loose comparison to Hodge in that he can play both half back and midfield well and goes hard all the time. Not as good on both sides as Hodge is and is yet to prove as tough as Hodge.

Despite starting out mainly as a half back and playing 70% of his TAC Cup footy there he can certainly play midfield. You do not rack up the clearance numbers he did playing midfield in the last 7 or 8 games if you are not up to it. He is a genuine two spot player rather than a flanker who may make a midfielder.
