So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

Whilst I'm not even part of it, I reckon it would be most fun to draft a full best 22 (and then compare teams), preferably via a 'snake draft' (i.e. last pick round 1 gets 1st pick round 2, etc.).

I also like the idea that you can draft from your own club but only up to a set maximum (of say 3 or 4 players out of 22) as it can be a bit restrictive otherwise (e.g. far easier for Gold Coast to draft than someone like Geelong when having to completely ignore your own team).
Agree with the first part, regarding picking players from your own club, it's better to either fully restrict it or fully allow it without any halfway measures.

Yep. I am fully allowing it in the hope that people don't prioritise players from their own club over other players.

I don't want someone like Judd to end up in the wrong spot because of the rule.

ArdentEagle not sure if you’re aware your pick for WCE is up 😄
Thanks mate...I didn't know.

Okay, I can't take any Eagles players so that rules Cox out. I really think Bont is better than Judd now too. (Ohhhh. Controversial from and Eagles fan)

Rance VERY unlucky too.

I am however going to go for the player who I think would be the hardest to replace down the draft, Part strategy, part best available. Only 4top line rucks available really and (Prime) Gawn is a head above the all I think

The best Ruck I have ever seen imo, prime Max Gawn. Combine Cox and Sandy and you'd get a Gawn. (Well you get the idea)

WCE - Pick 3
(Prime) Max Gawn

You're up mate.

Actually rule change, after some discussion on the previous page you can pick Eagles players now, if you want to change your pick.

Thanks mate.

Again probably controversial but I'm still picking prime Gawn...Cox would get beaten in the taps and Gawn would go very close to matching him around the ground.

I'll still grab some damn good mids later. I won't get another freak talent ruck though.

Wow. That's thrown the cat amongst the pigeons. Great choice!

Yes, I don't think you can go wrong with either, and both were so dominant in their prime. I do agree though that it can easily be argued Gawn pips Cox, though it is close. It is a great choice though as a dominant ruckman is so valuable to an entire midfield group.

With this only being three rounds I thought long and hard about what each team needed. The Crows, it's kind of obvious what their biggest weakness is, a gun midfielder. I was nervous that with the rule change he'd be gone, but welcome to Chris Judd, the second best midfielder of the past 20 years.

Mr Meow with the Saints

They would be two of a dozen players I'd consider for the next pick.

This is where it gets very interesting...

Agreed. There is so much to consider. Martin's best is likely higher than Dangerfield's, but Dangerfield has been far more consistent throughout his career. Not to mention Dean Cox is still on the board, as are players like Hawkins, Kennedy, both Riewoldts, Rance and a host of others.

Though I do agree St Kilda need midfielders, I wonder if a Selwood would be a better option for them than a Martin or Dangerfield as he is more of an on field leader.

For this game, in terms of your team's list, how does it work if one of your current players gets drafted by someone else. For example, when another team drafts Dusty does he get erased from Richmond's list and I should consider that when drafting in future rounds or does he theoretically appear in two lists?

There would be an 18 year old Martin drafted to St Kilda and the 33 year old Martin continues as is at Richmond.

Also for consideration - where do some of the best young talent we've ever seen straight out of the draft - Daicos, Sheezel and Reid - fit into the jigsaw?

Yep, would take a braver person to take them early in the draft simply because of the lack of body of work compared to the others but it would not surprise me at all to see them taken in the first 3 rounds, maybe earlier.

We would need that explosiveness that both Martin and Danger provide.
I would lean more to Dusty although probably not as consistent as Danger he has that miraculous factor about him just does the stupidly amazing things and is proven when the lights shine brightest he is at his best

But he made his debut in 2001

Yes but we need an eligibility rule and it gets harder if we muddy the waters if we have things like debuted in 2001 or after rather than a clean rule of "drafted in 2000 or later"

I am however happy to change that if others think I should.

What does everyone think? Is a "Drafted 2000 and beyond" rule best or a "Debuted 2001 and beyond best"?
