It's not about the wording, it's the meaning of the words.

_RT_ is saying call someone a dickhead or a soft**** if you're going to, but don't use words that denigrate individuals or sections of society that have no control over their position.

Dickhead is sexist. Why is male genitalia inherently a bad thing worthy of a neutral insult?

soft**** is offensive to men with erectile dysfunction, a legitimate medical conditional same as ******* cerebral palsy.

You're 2 for 2 there.

It's all about context anyway, tossers.
Refer to my other post if you want a response to your first.

And if we were none the wiser, as in it was never picked up, it wouldn't be this big a deal.

But it was, and the response is appropriate, and people will be reminded that it's inappropriate, and we all move on with our lives.

Some have personal experience in the area and they're genuine about it, no problem hearing from them. It's the others who love to jump at the chance to display their moral superiority over everyone else in the form of "educating" the world on how to talk...

And thus, the frustration silently brews until a Donald Trump gets elected by those who feel frustrated at the games being played in this area... it touches on a much broader topic that we can't move on from as easily as we'd like.

Some people take it for what it is, open discussion, others use it as another excuse to get offended. As many have said, can't please everyone.

But if you're bringing up something like Trump in this discussion then it sounds more like you have other deep seeded issues you need to resolve. Pass.

Well they should harden up. ;)

I know the point you're trying to make, and you're not wrong, but in general there's a differentiation between "visible" sources of discrimination (eg. race, gender, disability) and "hidden" (eg. erectile dysfunction). As a society we're pretty much at a point where it's reasonably expected that you don't discriminate over "visible" sources. Ideally the "hidden" sources shouldn't be discriminated against either, but if someone is making comments without knowledge of that source then it's more about informing/educating them as the first response, rather than criticism.

I'm oversimplifying it but it's far easier to offend by using terms surrounding "visible" sources as they are metaphors.
"You are <negative connotation> because you look like <target group>."

Some terms also have a history of discrimination/abuse surrounding them that people of privilege wouldn't understand.

With due respect, you've pulled that out of your ass haven't you? :p

You can't see sexual orientation. Homophobic slurs are hidden by those standards.

The R word is hidden. You can't see how fast someone's mind works from the outside and not everyone has identifiable physical features associated with being slow to learn.

"You're a <insert homophobic slur>"

"Oh I didn't know you were homosexual, I couldn't see that. Now that you've informed me, I won't call you that again, but I'll continue to use the term as an insult towards others".

It's a slippery slope and your logic cannot exclude "soft****" from being offensive, as it's a legitimate medical problem and you're making all men everywhere who suffer from erectile dysfunction feel worse about themselves every time they hear that term used as a derogatory term. You can't escape this fact.

And once you're willing to accept that "soft****" is offensive to millions of men, then any adjective "soft" used to describe a footballer is also offensive if society has that word at the front of their mind. It's discriminating against millions of men with a medical condition and making them feel worse about their condition.

That's why it's stupid to go down the slippery slope of banning words.

Um... Trump, PC language, and the radical left are highly correlated topics. By making a personal attack on me and dismissing me like that and removing yourself from discussion on that basis... that would be the most insulting comment from the past 5 pages of this thread IMO as it's mean-spirited. Words matter less than intentions.

No. And your argument completely ignores the reason why many of these terms are more inappropriate.

It's the physical characteristics or behaviours that are the ones people stereotype, discriminate and bully by. The connection between the term and the physical characteristic is easy to make. It's not in your soft**** example.

But we're slowly changing anyway. We shouldn't insult, and something like soft**** shouldn't be used, but in terms of it being a term that marginalises sections of society it's certainly not one, which is the whole point. Erectile dysfunction is a medical condition. If you think soft**** is bad as some of those other terms then you would also think something like coldface is bad. Clearly there's a difference. Most people get it. Some people don't care.

Fact is Caddy got caught saying something he shouldn't have and has rightfully apologised for it. One would hope he doesn't put himself in a position to be caught saying it again.

PS. If you're going to pretend to be outraged you should at least post it the first time instead of editing your post and adding it afterwards. You're right though, your words don't matter and your intention seems like a waste of time so I'll say goodnight. :)

Couldn't give a shit about politics. It's a football forum.

Well, Caddy's apology is political... Robbo called it fake. Caddy most likely doesn't legitimately feel sorry, but has been forced to publish a template apology due to PC culture.

If you want to pass on my comment because I touched on the politics that explain this football situation, then I suggest you stop reading this thread until Caddy plays his next great game.

You won't have to wait long.

Imo I think the world has gone too pc, but jokes or words like this should be said in the right forum and avoided in others. It just is the way it is.
Spot on, and if this frenetic tough game wasn't miked up noone would be the wiser and noone would have been insulted. As i said earlier, footy clasified gave Caddys words subtitles just to give peope clarity on wat he actually said.

PC is now the new religion of the modern era portraying to do good , but at a financial or mental cost. Lawyers Quacks and so on are having a field day as a large percentage of the population are now categorised into some group of mental illness.

The people on here that have met me would know I have a permanent physical disability, now if I was called what Caddy had said on a footy field I would have felt sorry for the bloke bc to me he would have appeared to be mentally challenged . This then in today’s conditions would make me an insensitive cretin. So I would be equally guilty although i was acting in my defence.
The reality is in the heat of the moment it’s a smart arse comment and everybody moves on.

People need to stop playing in the hands of parasites
who have taken being respectful honourable and righteous into PC grey areas so they can profit from them.
Unfortunately with the drastic fall in education standards in this country and the rise in digital playtime we’ve created a flock of illiterate sheep with no thought processes, except for the ones these parasites what them to believe are right .

I will not be responding to any comments on this matter bc anything I say maybe used against me in the court of law. This is my partial Miranda Warning to you all.

Fake outrage over the use of words like soft****, yes. Then you randomly said I most likely have deep seeded issues and 'pass'. I've been suicidal in the past year so that comment is more hurtful than Caddy using the S word to unintentionally trigger people. Anyway, move on to the prelim. I'm tipping Caddy's goal kicking to be more universally palatable than his choice of words last week.

When I grew up kids made fun of mentally handicapped people, or locked them up in kew Cottages. My friends brother was down syndrome and he would make short work of anyone who said anything out of turn. I know it's just a word, but I've taught my kids not to use it, so neither should adults.
I have taught my kids things that I in no way expect others to do. I think making such a comment is living in dream land .

more inappropriate as opposed to just being inappropriate...?!?

Of course it is! That's all due to role models that take the time/effort to educate/communicate!

But there is a world of difference between an off the cuff word in the heat of a physical contest and deliberate ongoing bullying and taunting of someone in a school or work environment. Most people know it ,too. I have no doubt we would all be embarrassed if there was secret footage of us having private conversations/arguments at home or simply our reactions to a close game of footy. Context is everything.

I have a disability but I can laugh at funny comments about the disabled, including those targeting my own physical disability if it is spoken during a comedy routine. If the same thing was said to me on the street by an anonymous passer by, my emotional response would be very different.
Good on you for your ability to live with whatever disability you have, my partner likewise, and we can have some fun with it as adults using humour... but a 8 year old sitting by the fence or at home listening on the TV might not have such a grasp of context.
In some ways it is a rather trivial, I'm sure most people can relate to it being a off the cuff remark and put it in context, but better off it not happening at all. Hence the apology and get on with things. But it should be called out when it happens, as you say context is everything.

Caddy had to say that. How many of these mea culpas do you need to hear or read before you see them for what they are? They are simply a public relations exercise forced upon sportsmen/women/entertainers by their management to defuse bad public opinion. I am sure the players shake their heads in bewilderment behind closed doors.
I'm sure most players would shake their heads at Caddy's remark and say, glad it wasn't me. Society is pretty well versed in what is acceptable and what isn't. Football clubs are a big family, they meet and greet, visit hospitals and support all sorts of illness and disabilities in their job all the time, so they would get it even if the fans don't.
