The only thing that concerns me is his highlight package looks like a young & all the articles are placing him to be the next Dusty. Hard act to follow & will get annoying fast if he doesn't hit the ground running. I have a slight concern that we could look back & feel we picked too heavily on the "Dusty Rememberries ". Dusty averaged 21 touches a game in u18
s, not 11.

In saying all that, his highlight package showed a player who can lead & fight. His ceiling is a much needed identity to this team, which we desperately need. If there is a "Dusty Clone" in the draft then it makes a hell of a lot of sense for him to go #1.

Anyone got opinions on if his low ball count is a concern - does he have a tank?

I've never seen a comparison come to fruition. So stupid we have these comparisons. I've also never seen two players that are exactly alike. Sammy is his own player, He's Sam Lalor, not Dustin Martin and he's one of us.

That he is a super rich kid with advantages.
Have a read of this one for some perspective and how much money they pump into getting the best sports people in the doors of these schools

“For a host of reasons, which start but don't end with scholarships, private schools are producing footballers for the AFL at an burgeoning rate. On Wednesday, the majority of the first 30 names called out will likely be from what can be characterised as elite private schools, either from Victoria's APS, its Associated Grammar Schools (AGS) or equivalent schools in Adelaide and Perth

"Geelong Grammar's got a bigger salary cap than Collingwood," quipped one AFL official, explaining how so much talent had been herded into the boarding houses and immaculate fields.“

Ok makes more sense now cheers

In girth or height?!?
Why Dont We Have Both GIF

Love how the kid owns the conversation with Cotch, Grimes, Jack, and Dave Astbury in the First Moments video in this article. Also gives Hotton a huge pump up towards the end.

Don't him to watch much vision of him to instantly spot why he will be a star

  • Physical traits that no one else has around him in every clip you see (fend off, bullish strength, shrugging opponents)
  • Agility to weave in and out of contests and tackles that defies his physical size
  • Ability to free his hands in any tackle and get clean hands away (all the best mids in the comp do this better than the rest)
  • Ability to push forward and be a marking target

I agree - but always be wary of the men against boys element. There'll be kids who are substantially behind him in maturity & development. We all know kids who were great in U12s but were mediocre by U16s...

I don't believe in this line of thinking for midfielders. All the mids in the under 18's these days are already pretty well built. The physical brute types in under 18's usually translate to senior consistently. Especially if the physicality is matched with athleticism like Lalor. I bet Lalor is shrugging players off from round 1.

There a few match stick built mids for sure like FOS and Jagga. They will put on some weight but are never going to be physically dominant players. That's not their game. People still think back to Fyfe putting on like 20 kilos after his draft year and turning into to an elite inside mid. This is not common it's a rarity.

The only time I would agree would be key forwards that have 10-15kg on their key defenders opponents and then getting drafted off kicking a few bags in those games. Have to be more wary of that.

He is not that much shorter than Smillie and Armstrong. Surely he's at least 190cm. He was clearly taller than Ben Dixon who is 188.
