Lalor doesnt have to become a Dusty clone to justify being pick 1. Dusty is one of the goats, if Lalor is a good player at AFL level we have done well.
Lalor should just concentrate being Lalor. Form his own game to what he knows to be his own strengths and weaknesses. To try to play exactly like someone else is folly and a recipe for failure.

Touch of Luke Hodge and Selwood about him. The strength and power at his age is amazing and add a couple of pre seasons that he's been missing and he will explode onto the scene.
Carrys himself like a leader already. Speaks confidently.
I don't care if we don't win a game next year. It's going to be a joy watching these guys come through.

This guy is on an another level physically. We wonā€™t rush him will get him right build him up he probably needs to drop a couple kegs TBH

Letā€™s be patient heā€™s the real deal

The only thing that concerns me is his highlight package looks like a young & all the articles are placing him to be the next Dusty. Hard act to follow & will get annoying fast if he doesn't hit the ground running. I have a slight concern that we could look back & feel we picked too heavily on the "Dusty Rememberries ". Dusty averaged 21 touches a game in u18
s, not 11.

In saying all that, his highlight package showed a player who can lead & fight. His ceiling is a much needed identity to this team, which we desperately need. If there is a "Dusty Clone" in the draft then it makes a hell of a lot of sense for him to go #1.

Anyone got opinions on if his low ball count is a concern - does he have a tank?

It it is little bit of a risky pick as most number 1 pick usually have dominant years. Mainly off the back of injuries holding him back, endurance, durability. Especially when you compare to other top prospects who had massive production - Langford, Jagga, Draper, etc. Ashcroft we could never pick and FOS not much and I put him in the same boat as Lalor. Injuries held him back, didn't have a massive year and is more of an upside than production pick.

In saying that, I admire the approach. We want the stars/superstars. Playing it safe probably wouldn't get us to the top again.

In a perfect world if everything goes to plan regarding the question marks and injuries, all of Lalor, Smilie, Hotton, Trainer and Armstrong have the talent/potential be considered top 5 or fringe top 5 players from this draft when it's all said an done. They won't all get there for sure, but I wouldn't rule any of them out.

Averaged 27 in CTL if take out the game he ripped the hammy off the bone.

Champs he was very underdone and played predominantly forward.

His CTL games showed he can rack it up playing as a pure mid.

I agree - but always be wary of the men against boys element. There'll be kids who are substantially behind him in maturity & development. We all know kids who were great in U12s but were mediocre by U16s...

Old enough to remember the same thing being said about Dusty in his draft year

...he's a man child, he's so much bigger than the other kids and he won't be able to push AFL players around like that....

Well I watched him push everyone around for 10+ years.

Lalor will lose the puppy fat after a few months of training in a professional environment and by year 4-5 will be a ripped lad!

AFL Draft: Richmond debate jumper numbers as Sam Lalor chases Dustin Martinā€™s no.4.

Richmond is expected to announce the jumper numbers for its draft haul in the coming days, with the club still unsure whether to forego club tradition.

Richmond could resist the temptation to hand its new draftees the jumper numbers of triple premiership champions Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin in part to allow them to earn their stripes as Tigers players.
The clubā€™s new No.1 overall pick Sam Lalor plays in the manner of the retiring champion Martin and having played junior footy in the No.4 is keen to secure that cherished jumper at Punt Road.
But Richmond coach Adem Yze told the Herald Sun the club would this week discuss whether handing the clubā€™s draftees higher jumper numbers would provide a two-fold benefit.
It would take the pressure off some of those eight 2024 draftees but also follow a long-held tradition of players earning those early jumper numbers as Richmond men.
That decision will be made this week but not before weighing up the preferences of players including pick one Lalor, pick seven Josh Smillie, pick 12 Taj Hotton and pick 14 Jonty Faull.
Riewoldt played his entire career in the No.8 jumper, Trent Cotchin played 16 years in the No.9 jumper but Martin started with a much higher number before securing No.4 in his second season.

The historically important numbers of Dylan Grimes (Roy Wright and Ian Stewartā€™s No.2), Daniel Rioli (Jack Dyerā€™s 17) and Shai Bolton (Kevin Bartlettā€™s 29) are also available.
ā€œItā€™s funny. I had that discussion with (Lalor) the other night on draft night, was sitting there just to get his feel for it and he is a confident kid, and they all are,ā€ Yze told the Herald Sun.
Weā€™ve not only just number four, weā€™ve got number nine available, number eight, so weā€™ve got a lot of single digit numbers.
ā€œDusty is a star, and so is Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt so those numbers are going to be taken eventually but weā€™ve just got to weigh up whether we want to do that straight away and put that sort of pressure on them, or whether they come into our program what you normally would for like a Rhyan Mansell (number 31) or Tom Brown (number 30).
ā€œTheyā€™ve come in and theyā€™ve started in a higher number, and theyā€™ve earned their spot in our team and then will move.
ā€œSo weā€™ll be making those decisions as a club over the next couple of days.
So we donā€™t want to put too much pressure on them, but at the same time, thereā€™s an element that theyā€™re coming into a footy club and weā€™ve got 35 other players that have sort of earned their way, and theyā€™ve never really walked into a low number. Like Dusty started with 36 so weā€™ll make those decisions over the next couple of days.ā€

Yze said Tom Lynch had returned to the club and was fighting fit after two seasons out with hamstring and foot concerns but would likely be managed until post-Christmas.
The clubā€™s four ACL victims Mykelti Lefau, Judson Clarke, Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young will all return to football early in the season but none are likely to be ready for round 1.
Lefau tore his ACL in the first days of June but has made excellent gains, while Gibcus (March injury), Clarke (mid-April) and Young (late May) will all be eased back in.
ā€œMykelti is moving really well. Heā€™s done one before and heā€™s a powerful man so whether that helps but heā€™s probably in front of a few of the bigger boys. So Tylar, Judson and Gibcus are a little slower than him but going well.
ā€œI think from round 3 or 4 they will start to integrate back into some footy. So at the start of the season they will be unavailable but they are progressing nicely.
ā€œLynch just loves the game and heā€™s our vice captain for a reason. He just wants to perform for the club. We are just trying to get him through a pre-season so he can hit the ground running and have an uninterrupted season because he deserves it.
ā€œOne of the young boys will probably live with him for a few weeks and thatā€™s great but our main priority is to get him firing for round 1 so he can get out there against Carlton in round 1.ā€
Thanks for this
