Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Lance Franklin
DOB: 30 January 1987

Buddy has kicked 19 goals in 12 games. Compare this to his prior years. It’s a huge drop off.
Logan has kicked 24 in 14 games
I wonder how many times Buddy has been targeted to reach those goals v Logan? On complete speculation, maybe 3 or 4 times more, but whatever it is it’s much more.

Lance is averaging more tackles, marks than Logan, Amartey and Mclean from less games.

At 36 years old he's still outperforming them.

He's also 3rd behind Papley and Logan for Goals/game.

They were talking on SEN today about an article that has been written arguing given the era Buddy has played in he is actually the greatest goal kicker of all time. Does anyone have a link to that article?
Not sure which article SEN were referring to but this an interesting read
The long-range shot was a vital tool for Franklin in reaching 1,000 goals, especially in the modern era of the game known for its tight zone defence and congested forward lines.

One of the benefits of crowding forward lines is that defenders can more easily intercept kicks and cut off players leading for the ball. It prevents forwards from taking marks deep inside 50 metres, giving them a relatively easy set shot for goal.

This was the bread and butter of full-forwards in the ’80s and ’90s and resulted in an era of prolific scoring. The average goals for a side per game peaked at 16.2 in 1982. Last year, it was just 11.5 — the lowest since 1968.

Yes that is a great article

Here is the SEN discussion

at 17:45 or so.

They made a few stupid points about the quality of the grounds in the 80's, forgetting that in the 80's kicking bags of 10 was quite common so clearly the ground conditions didn't affect forwards back then too much. They made it sound like the forwards of yesteryear were so good if they played in the modern game they would kick even more than they did.

Less games has nothing to do with an average but I see what you are saying.
Just worried that we are getting a little carried away after 2 solid games and 1 very good one last week. His numbers this year are hardly amazing but agree he is doing v well for a 36 year old.
Totally agree with comments around what a champion he is and his standing as one of the best ever is undisputed.
In my view next year is the perfect time to give Logan and Amartey the keys to the forward line. They are the right age, they have both filled out and just need to confidence to own it.
This is what can happen when it gels for KPFs (of course there is no guarantee this will happen with our boys). Growth is normally not linear for KPFs

2020 (age 22) Harry McKay kicked 21 games from 13 games
2021 (age 23) Harry McKay kicked 58 from 19 games

I hope we haven't seen the last of Buddy. But given there's a chance we may only have 4 matches remaining it's definitely a possibility.

He was really starting to work his way into good form and had adapted his role to better suit the needs of the team.

He'd just played an instrumental role in 2 of Armateys goals and injured himself in the process. Such a shame.

Is Calf strain a guess? how do they know the results of a player medical result?

Because I'm sure there are tests that can be done to check the location of the injury and how bad it is before you have the official scan? And even so he may well have had the scan today.
