Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Lance Franklin
DOB: 30 January 1987

How many 'assists' did he have? He has had 30 'involvements', 11 both Freo and Adelaide, 6 against the Pies and only the two against North are they the same stat you are talking about?

7 goals assists. Looking beyond his disposals and goals kicked, he really is contributing significantly .easily set up more goals than any other swan and obviously kicked the most

He has been very good

But we are paying for more than very good

Considering 2 of the games he has played in have been some of the worst conditions you could possibly play in, only played a half against Melbourne and coming off an interrupted pre season, he really can't be faulted. I don't think many players would do better if they were in the same situation.

Not to mention being the only forward target for 4 of the 6 games, making it very easy for opposition to defend

Not faulting him at all and i agree with what you say, but then i start to think every week it feels like as fans we say he wasnt too bad considering and give a long list of why he is great

I personally still expect more

I think will really see the dominating buddy when Reid or Tippett get back. More often he will get one on one with his man where he really dominates his defender. With his lack of lack marking, it makes it easier to defend him with the loose man. And even if he still gets double teamed, Tippett will likely get one on one. And if the opposition want to use 4+ defenders on buddy and Tippett, I'm sure goodes and Reid would enjoy the freedom.

When we have our full arsenal available, we will be a totally different team

Yep, I completely agree. It was really great to see Goodesy get back out there last weekend. I thought & felt his involvement made a difference to the team dynamic and attitude almost the instant he got out there.

Talk about height in the fwd line though... Potentially have any combination of Tippett, Buddy, Goodes, Reid, LRT, Pyke & DRix up there over the coming months. Pretty tall but mostly mobile and agile enogogh for it to work okay IMO. We can push Buddy & Goodes well up the ground and Reid & LRT can both (hopefully) provide their services well both fwd & back.

Personally I would leave buddy and Tippett in the forward line. We seen in the crows game that buddy's presence up there causes players to do silky things because of panic, when two crows players went to man buddy up when jack had marked the ball and allowed jack to run off the mark unopposed. Buddy and Tippett is a much scary prospect than buddy and reid or Reid and tippett. Opposition cannot afford to double team both and I believe it will be out most frightening combination.

I'd let Reid roam up the ground, his contested marking means he can provide more targets for his teammates. Ie leading for long kick ins or leading for defensive 50 rebounds. Buddy cannot really be that target

Surely I can't be the only one who has noticed that when he has the ball in his hand he kicks it to the advantage of his teammate but when most swans have it and are kicking to him they just aim in his general direction.

The kick to derickx on the wing on sat night and then inside fifty to the leading forward were kicks that only jetta, mcveigh, goodes and mal can regularly deliver for us and were kicks that only the swan could have marked. He needs a few more of this for him

I've noticed the same thing. I was thinking to myself, geez, the Hawks have really focussed on their precision kicking. It's quite a substantial difference when you see his kicking compared to the rest of the team. It makes the rest look quite ordinary in that respect.

Goodes is in the same league re: his kicking, he weights it beautifully and puts it to the players advantage. Something I haven't seen many of our other players manage.

McVeigh was similar, but his kicking has let him down this year, and Jetts is a pretty good field kick as well when he's on song.

The rest of the players seem to just bomb it long and cross their fingers, but they rarely end up to the player's advantage, they often go overhead or sit up long enough for another defender to run off their man and spoil.

Buddy sees the space in front of the player and positions the kick so they can run onto the ball and protect the space in front of them. Need more of this

With all due respect it has nothing to do with 'precision' kicking, its easier to weight a kick as you correctly put it to advantage than pinpoint a kick.. just kick it to the advantaged side its simple really it should come naturally for players that make it to the highest level. It is more to do with decision making and composure and just simply applying a few footy smarts.

Really interesting that Melbourne won't have Clark's payments included in their salary cap, despite him breaking the contract.

It'll be interesting to see if we're afforded the same luxury with Franklin in the future.

What is the afl's reasoning for allowing this? Obviously a deliberate ploy to set a precedent to bail us out lol

It is an interesting one for sure.

I feel the Clark one is fully justified and the guy has some obvious issues and can't play so good call by the AFL.

Franklin is different.

Lets say he drives his car onto Bondi, accidental of course, hits the fake boobs of a swimwear model that just happened to be in front of the car, totals the car, wrecks his knees and he can't play again then yeh the AFL should let us off the salary cap space. (In my tale of woe no actual swimwear models with fake boobs were harmed).

That was no fault of the Clubs. It was non-footy related stuff and he will never play again. Hopefully there is some player insurance in place from Buddys side of the ledger.

If it is a case of in 3 years his knees are shot through wear and tear on the field, pace is gone and he is fat then tough luck for us even if he retires. If something external to footy cannot be proved then we should rightly be stuck with the cost of the contract.

I have no issue with what the AFL said in our case as long as there is common sense involved.

It's the AFL. You can be assured that there will be no common sense.

Yes.

In hindsight I should have split the sentence up or rephrased entirely.

I offer a full apology to common sense in the juxtaposition with the AFL. It was cruel of me. Heartless. I feel dirty. Will you forgive me common sense? Just this once?

somehow, i think buddy may suffer depression in the last couple of years of his contract
Have you seen the gap between Hawthorn's kicking skills and ours? It won't take 6 years

Has anyone else noticed that forwards like Buddy know exactly were to kick it, to right where they would want it.

Got to be fair to him. He is an exceptional field kick anyway. Guy has a lot of skill.
