I love what he might bring to the team in the future, but clearly needs more time in the VFL to work on his craft.
Just a quick glance at the stats shows he has a defensive contest loss rate of 60%.
Laverde for the record is nearly half that at 33%.
Elite 1 on 1 defenders tend to be below 25%

Where would you have played him though? I’d love to have kept him in also, but if Laverde is fit, he comes in.

Kaine has shown enough in two games that there is definitely something there to work with though. Something good. Maybe even something really good.

Laverde comes in for Hind and Ridley gets released more offensively. Allows Lav not to be a key defender for once.

Lav, Zerk and Baldwin in the same side dont offer enough offensivily and its too stagnant and slow

Especially vs west coast

Statistically, Laverde was literally one of the worst 1-on-1 key defenders in the comp last season, and his stats aren't much better this season. Baldwin's sample size is too small (only had 5 1-on-1s) to know for sure if he's better or worse 1-on-1. He's doing better for intercept marks, intercept possessions and defensive pressure acts, so there's that.

I cant believe people honestly thought after the last 3 years when Laverde was fit he wouldnt be an automatic selection. He has been for 3 years under 2 different coaches. His 2021 was elite one on one.

As much as the sample size is fairly small he was beaten regards Baldwin a fair bit 1v1. You can only be picked on/or not based on what youve shown in the games

I think the issue is offense, speed, groundball and being too stagnant slow with replacing Hind with Baldwin

And if its not. Those tall 4 are certainly not required vs west coast

Saw it more as a development confidence opportunity for Baldwin and a test of the Laverde shoulder in the VFL. Selectors will know best.

Nobody in the AFL yet but he's been great at VFL level at it. I wanted to see him get an extended run at it to see if he can. If he can't, then hopefully someone like Reid will be able to play seniors not long after the bye.

Yep. That's why I'm not saying Laverde should play VFL. I want to see Baldwin playing until the bye so we can see how he goes with an extended run.

Unless they're dropping him to play forward in the VFL.
