Player Watch #26: Luke Parker - Welcome to North Melbourne - Konstanty and Parker traded for Pick 44

Atley was hardly tried in the midfield. Maybe a few stints here or there. He certainly wasn't given an opportunity along the lines of a whole season to show what he could do.

I remember watching his junior highlights and some of his burst from stoppages was Judd like. Seemed to me like a waste to just chuck him on a back flank for his career like we did. But that's Brad Scotts for you.

And really, how much time did we give communism? Surely not enough to prove itself.

The other day I thought about Shaun Atley. We played him from whoa to go for 10 years straight. He ended up with over 200 games. We delisted him at the age of 28 and that was the end of his career. It's really bizarre.

Genuinely the single worst disposal I've ever seen from a North player. not sure ive ever seen a north player shit themselves as bad as that in a crucial moment
I have.

Wasn’t nearly as bad as people made him out to be. Would certainly prefer him over McDonald atm.

He could actually defend. Not saying LMac can't, but Ats was a pretty good defender
And at least Ats had elite straight line speed to close distance and/or run off half back.
McDonald is one of the slowest players off the mark I’ve ever seen. Looks like he’s stumbling/tripping over himself in one spot for a full second, before he actually makes his first forward step. Not just this year, but pretty much his whole career. Does my head in.

He was a worse kick inside 50 than jy is

Played well at half forward a few times. You'd think he would have a been a good player to have adding defensive pressure and leading again and again like a maniac in the forward half.

McDonald actually can't, not one on one, he get's beaten almost every time. Some of the criticism of Atley is misdirected but most of it is spot on. He did have lightening speed but no awareness hence the continual shatting himself and turning the ball over whenever an opposition player got anywhere near him. He'd panic and then look to make it someone elses problem which usually resulted in a turnover.

Phark me he was an above average footballer - KB warriors throwing shade are so frustrating.

He was a very good servant as is Luke.

They’re not all superstars.

He doesn't get beaten close to every time. Where do you people get this shit. His loss% rate in 1 on 1s was better this year than McGovern, Broad, Pearce, Scrimshaw, Ridley, to name a few. Of all the things to criticise about McDonald, you pick his defending... Jesus Christ

Yeah, his contested and intercept marking is actually pretty good.

Think being too harsh on LMac. He goes back as hard as anyone with the flight. Not a bad intercept mark. He can defend. I think it’s his use with the ball that’s the issue

Atley had straight line speed(as mentioned) and I recall was a reasonably neat short distance kick(both sides) who just struggled with decision making. Rarely injured.
Parker, to reiterate, addresses a yawning chasm in leadership, experience and maturity.
Sole captaincy please as a statement. Up to the players then to get in behind him.

I find the captaincy calls a bit bewildering. I get the leadership chasm but I am not sure having someone from outside get the "c" is the way to go. Its a bit embarrassing and does it not create some possible bruised ego or issues in the group? Now Luke Parker has been close to my favourite / only footballer I even know about outside of North for a long time despite his seemingly constant destroying of us so I am thrilled and excited enough by his arrival to forget that Jack Darling is coming as well. I think his on field, off field traits etc are going to be fantastic for our group. Doesnt need to be captain for that. Does he?
Stick with Jy solo until Harry can take over would be my vote.
