Player Watch #26: Luke Parker - Welcome to North Melbourne - Konstanty and Parker traded for Pick 44

Sad to see one of my favorites in another jumper next year.

Parker will be great for you guys, there’s been plenty of time this season where he has been thrown into the midfield in the second half and changed the momentum of the game, and has plenty of forward craft. Has plenty left in the tank and just a year ago I thought he would surely play his 350th with us.

Our game plan has recently deprioritized the contested side of the game in our midfield so Clarko’s system may be a better fit.

As for Konstanty, keep him away from pre-season wrestling matches.
Depends who he's wrestling.

Day 1 of preseason

LMac & Jy: Welcome to the club Luke. We've got this tradition with our new players called Kangalotto where...

Parker: I don't give a crap about your silly games. I'm here to win games of footy. Now go sit over there.
Look at me…

I am the captain now.

I'd honestly give him the captaincy straight away. Give him a year or two to guide and train with Sheezel and Wardlaw before passing the baton.

Think he is the type of player who would relish the chance to guide our youngsters.

I would include LDU alongside Sheezel and Wardlaw. I think LDU could benefit a lot from working closely with Parker.

I wouldn't hand him the captaincy, but if the players voted for him to be captain, different story.

Welcome to North Luke.

This notion of handing the captaincy to Parker is so ****ing naive and childish

Yeah, that's exactly what you do if you want to create friction and an unhealthy atmosphere around a new player the second they walk in the door

I think the younger members of our playing group will see his value pretty quickly and get behind him anyway.

Nothing naive or childish about it.

Our captains have failed to set an acceptable standard over the last 2 years as confirmed by our on field performances so something has to change.

Our young, future leaders are still not quite ready and would benefit greatly by learning off Parker for a few years. I think the only friction will come from the likes of LMac and Simpkin and if thats the case, I don't care. Ship them off if they become a problem. I'm sure the playing group by now can see that their leadership is just not working.

I would be shocked come February or whatever when the players vote for the Captaincy, that Parker doesn't get voted in anyway.

This times 1000%.

Getting leadership types like Parker & Daniel through the door suggests to me that our current leaders simply aren’t up to it.

McDonald’s matey matey approach achieves absolutely nothing and Simpkin isn’t the best communicator.

Parker is one who will demand respect and set standards the minute he walks through the door, both through his onfield actions and through his off field knowledge.

He can do all that without it being handed to him on a silver platter. All that does is create a shit change rooms culture

I agree that if he's voted in then it's a different story

From the outside looking in, it's pretty much a no contest. Parker is just on a completely different level. I think this will become apparent with our playing group very quickly.

I don’t love the instant captain idea but this brings it back to voting being part of the problem. If it’s a choice between someone who will drive much higher standards and someone who doesn’t, and enough players would prefer not to be pushed that hard, we keep going round in circles.

There’s a place for player input but I think the coach should decide what kind of leader they think is needed and who can best do that.

We have lost more games in a 5 year period than we have ever lost over that same time period in our history.

All with a buddy buddy change room culture.

So perhaps that is part of the problem and it needs a bit of agitation to change the losing culture we have ingrained in ourselves.

Too many too comfortable for too long.

At a minimum he needs to be in the leadership group. When you look at our list he has the best credentials to be our captain when compared to everyone else.

We have a shit loser culture in our change rooms as it is. Anything that upsets the current arrangements is good in my eyes.

What we've done over the past 5-6 years hasn't worked.

Wouldn't want to disrupt the finely tuned Arden Street cultural ecosystem of the 2020s.

Luke McDonald is the best captain ever and should mentor Luke Parker.
