My only hope is that if we do want him, we set clear boundaries re his worth and don't freak out if we hear a rumour that another club is interested, blink and pay over the odds.

If he is available at a reasonable cost, fine. If not, deal with it and move on. Laids blinks too early.

Was just thinking exactly the same thing.

To beat everyone else to the punch, we'll take him with our second round pick for sure.

After all - we spoke to him first.

If we do, I reckon Nev would stab Deano with a pen. Bloke hasn't had a pick before 569 since 1953.

He is 184cm.

As a comparison,

Matthew Robbins 178cm
Mark Williams 180cm
Russel Robertson 187cm
Brad Johnson 182cm

Thanks for that. At midfielder height he'd need to have something very special to make it at AFL level.

Gun - Yes i know i know i said that about a similiar player in Thurley which i still think can show something in a better side

But Edwards!! PLEASE TAKE HIM!! I thought he was still on West Coast's list and wondered why he couldnt get a game until halfway through the year i saw he played for Frankston

His 1st quarter against Richmond last year in his debut was 1st class, had a great leap and takesa a good mark, and at 184cm is in the mould of a russel robertson/milne type and has good leg speed on the lead - could be a wildcard for us with Thompson and Edwards up forward some good skills from Wells,Smith,Swallow through the midfield and we could string a few games next year

Definately worth it, get him on the list and training with an AFL club again and this guy and thommo could kick 40-50 each!!! Could be the glitch in the forward line we have been missing

We definately need another option. Thommo was destroyed by our predictability in 2006. We went to him so often that he was being picked off by loose opponents who were very comfortable leaving their opponents knowing where the footy was going.

Let's say we do pick him up. I wonder what will happen:

A. Laidley will play him in the seniors, be played in his proper position, and given the time to establish himself.

B. He'll be given one match in the seniors and forever banished to the Magoos after failing to kick five goals in his fifteen minute stint on the field.

C. He'll be turned into a half-back flanker because his physical stats are ideal for the role.

D. It turns out that the reason the Eagles dumped him was because he was a dud and we've just wasted another 2nd round pick.

Please no.
Aside from his Andrew Tranquilli-like debut, he hardly set the world alight in the WAFL and his attitude at West Coast wasn't great.
I see him as another player very good at lower levels and not up to AFL standard.

As long as we don't pay over the odds, I can't say I am overly fussed. But he absolutely dominated VFL footy this year. He was kicking bags for fun.

People who think that he will replace Harding and play Harding's role are very stupid or dont watch football at all.

Mark Williams, Josh Mahoney type. He leads and has strong hands, once that doesnt work for him, it's nearly all over.

Given that he has kicked 100+ goals and won the liston it would seem to work more often than not for him...

who cares if he would replace harding or not... i know i would rather have mark williams shooting for goal than leigh harding any time.

What role was that?

Without any stats to back this up, I reckon 80% of Harding's goals came from marks. He was a small forward in name only. Sav Rocca like in his crumbing ability.

His attitude at the Eagles may not have been great, but the key issue is what his attitude is like now?

For someone to get 100 goals in a season, they'd have to have disciplined themselves and taken a more professional attitude to footy. Maybe he really wants a 2nd chance at AFL football, and he might make the most of his 2nd chance.

The only issue for me is just what we use to get him. Anything higher than a 4th round pick, and we've overpaid.

Edwards and Harding play completely different roles.

Harding is played by Laidley as a crumbing forward, he is not however and this is why he gets alot of blame, because he doesnt get the crumbing goals and most of the time doesnt get goals on the lead to warrant selection.

Edwards is different. Different build. He is more suited to a FF position where he can utilise his strong hands. He likes being the main forward, a la Mark Williams. What happens if he isnt the main forward? he isnt as good.

It depends what we are looking for. Replace a player who is played as a FP with a player who demands alot of the forward line, or go with a player who will replace a player who is played as a FP with another who is a goal sneak type.

If we were to recruit Edwards, the only way we could fully utilise him is if we were to play him out of the square, alone IMO.

Not worth it IMO.

Yeah true, in the VFL.

He was playing on blokes who werent as fast, werent as strong as he was. The only bloke who would probably contain him were AFL listed ones or the ones who were above VFL standard a la Moloney.

yeah i know what you are saying... though with his consistency i guess i just feel that he has an ability as a natural forward and will kick a couple of goals if he gets a sniff.

as for him playing out of the goal square, or as the go to guy in a forward line vs playing him along side thommo all these sort of structural qestions would need to be worked out by our brains trust. but if we could utilise him properly i think he could definitely add another dimension in the forward line... and even though he kicked all those goals in the vfl i think in terms of small forwards out there that we could acquire he is definitely the best option and IMO well worth a punt.

thurley has virtually played all year in the vfl and has kicked no where near as many goals, granted very different cricumstances.

He'll be dropped for some stupid reason.
