I don't think he'll make it.

Shame we didn't take Chad Warner.

The assist to Taranto was a thing of beauty. He went in hard and fast for the ball on that one.
Probably my favourite goal of the night. As he plays more games he will continue to learn to get into the right spots where he will be most damaging.

Confidence players like Dow and Cumberland (and to a lesser extent Ryan) seriously need more help from a mental health coach or something IMO. I don’t know how much help they’re already receiving, but to me, their form is all to do with their head.

If they’re confident in their ability, then they’ll tear the game apart. With every great decision comes another one. However, if they lack confidence in their ability, then it just builds up after every mistake they make. I analyse from their body language that they probably don’t leave their mistakes in the past the way some other players do (e.g., Dusty). That’s why I think they don’t have many average quarters. It’s usually either terrible or great.

I think they might need more encouragement through reminders that they have the talent to make it, and that even the best players make mistakes. The difference is that the best players barely ever doubt their ability even after making mistakes. It’s difficult to excel when all the mistakes you’ve made mentally weigh you down. Even the most talented players might struggle in those conditions.
Good points. All young players to an extent are the same, they have not been tested at an AFL level. They often come in playing their natural game, then opposition start making them second guess themselves, get inside their heads, then their coaches do, their own expectations etc. Injuries play a big role. It is only the real stars that get through that pretty easily, one because they are talented, they are taken low in the draft, they get automatic games and a lot more leeway because of their talent.

The players like Dow and Cumberland have a harder job. Dow was recruited for the future, not his junior days. He had elite agility and handball, but light, a bit raw, not particularly confident. Cumberland much the same but even less mentally mature (football wise). I assume they are getting mental coaching, but self confidence comes from playing the game and getting better. Neither have had much continuity. Hardwick was stuck with a star team on the wane, loyalty and a shortening fuse. Balta mentioned how erratic he was at the end, even Cotch and Jack mentioned it.

The coach has an enormous affect on a young player, look at what a nurturing type of coach McRae has done at Collingwood. Young players respond to that. Yze seems like a nice bloke, speaks well at the pressers, and it seems the players are playing for him as last night showed. He backed in Dow and he responded. I reckon Cumberland won't be far away.

Nah I think Dow does make mistakes. It may not be a blatant turnover, but sometimes he runs to the wrong place or something like that.

Having said that, I agree that he is a keeper. I wanted him delisted before the last 2 rounds of last year, but he’s shown a lot in the preseason. I believe that it’s only a matter of time before he plays to his potential. We need to persist with him for the next two weeks at least.
Yeah it’s not so much confidence in his abilities or even that he gets down on himself because he does seem to keep his head in the game even after making a mistake

More like he feels like he needs to wait for direction from the more established mids in the side and doesn’t want to go into a contest because he feels like he is the Jr player in the rotations if that makes sense

It’s one of those things that will work out the more he plays in the role and get that chemistry with the other midfielders who will get to a point where playing and complementing each other becomes 2nd nature

The handballs seem to become quicker because they know where each other will be purely from knowing how each other like to go about it

Yeah that’s exactly what I mean, but you said it better.

Dow has talent to take charge in the midfield. When he’s confident, he goes right into the contest, takes the ball, and clears it to our advantage. When he’s not confident, he just hangs around the contest waits for other more senior players to go in when it’s really his turn to go.

Not the same type of players, but compare that to players like Patrick Cripps and Oliver. They always go in when it’s their turn to go. Hardly ever miss a beat. Thats what I want Dow to do. Who cares about waiting for Hopper, or Bolton, or Dusty, or Taranto. They could be tagged out of the game, so just go in and do what we all know you can do. That’s why I think it’s confidence-related rather than raw ability.

A lot of that confidence will come with playing in the AFL team though. Until he manages to do that it’s difficult to just ‘get confidence’ for those situations

Thankfully if he continues to play like that even without confidence they won’t drop him

Like most people here it was looking like a bust but seeing glimpses now
not sure what his ceiling will be but as most have posted its looking more like a confidence and experience thing with thommo
think he would be a very different player with 50 games under his belt

He was in basically half of the CBAs as he was last week. 9 vs 17.

He played OK, but that should be the floor for his performance.
No doubt, last week he had a shocker and early on he was pretty invisible, but after Prestia went down he worked his way into the game. There was a handball in the second Q frommemory, around CHB when he was under a bit of heat that went every bit of 25m to a running half back that Pendelbury would be happy with. Another one not much later and all of a sudden he looking far more involved.

He did play OK, that should be his floor I agree, but last week there was a bit of a pile on, but like most of the footy world piling into Richmond after one game, I thought it was a bit over the top. He has a skillset that is different to anyone else at Richmond, the ability by hand to open up the play and bring others into the game, and he is elusive, hence I often compare him game to Shane Edwards, who we have missed as much as anyone. But he really is still a young player, and like Edwards he might be a bit inconsistent, but he will never have a better opportunity now to cement his spot.

Best bit of 'in and under' work I've seen in a long time. That type of pure football nous does not go unnoticed by the coaches. His kicking appeared to have improved too.

Went at 93% efficiency going by the stats
16 possies with only one Clanger

If he can get that up to 20 odd possessions at that sort of efficiency you'll take that every week.
No questions
I’m sure it’s not going to be all smooth sailing but I really want the club to ride the bumps this year with him and keep him in the 22

Now would also be the time to secure him on a two or three year deal before his value starts to increase

And a few really creative passes that released players.
Glad he didn’t go into his shell after the first game
