If he makes it, his weapon is going to be that he's powerful. If he can be a bit more composed inside 50 that will make the world of difference.

I think he could do with a rest but there's no shame losing your way a bit in your first experience playing in front of an insanely big crowd like that. His overall season so far has been a reason for optimism.

Geez Twitter has been harsh on this bloke. He's played under 10 games and ppl expect him to play like papley or Charlie Cameron week in week out. I will say i think he needs longer stops in his boots, kept slipping at pivotal times. Persist with him & hopefully he gains the confidence to finish the many opportunity he creates.

Missed a heap of gettable opportunities and only stuck 1 tackle. Very disappointing output.

Much like Ned Cahill - what are his weapons at AFL level?
I disagree with your assessment though Cahill is a good reference point.

Menzie is more canny than Cahill and has already shown he can create multiple avenues to goal. He can mark the footy, work in traffic to get shots off, and can get himself into space. Cahill couldn’t get separation and win his own footy in dangerous spots.

Menzie’s only real issue at present is his finishing.. which is weird because he has been ruthless at lower levels. Is anyone complaining about his game and value if he slots two more goals yesterday?

Seems to be caught in two minds when kicking for goal almost like he is focusing too hard to find someone to dish it off to and then gets caught in between. Just needs to be decisive and go for it. A little more composure needed as well. Lost his feet at a couple of important stages. Lots to work with though.

What impresses me about Menzie has been his ability to regularly bring the ball to ground when out numbered or when the entry kick was poor.

Do wonder if he has enough tricks to be part of a top 4 side but atm you have to be happy with his willingness to work without the ball and implement the game plan.

Fair few in that boat. Probably call Geelong and tell them we're sorry but there won't be a country game this year. Another kick in the teeth for rural Australia.
Menzies the stand out. Has been for a while now. I've never seen a forward pocket kick across the face of goals and out of bounds so much. Very frustrating.

What about his drop punt from deep in the pocket in the 3rd. Give credit where credit is due .
Yep agreed. I could be wrong, but I feel most of his misses have been on the run. When had a chance to compose himself, bam. V nice set shot.

The fact he was getting in dangerous spots and getting shots on the big stage was exciting. If he finishes a couple more we’re having a far different conversation.

Just looks to have his goal radar a bit off, whether that's getting used to the pace at AFL level and being able to steady himself before kicking, or going back and kicking a few bags at VFL level. His goalkicking in the VFL was generally pretty good from memory.

In all seriousness we should be using sports psychologists way more than I assume we are

You're right - he is a goal kicking killer at lower levels. Everything that got him signed, plus that game late year vs umm.. Port Melbourne? Some ridiculous finishes in there.

He has the talent and instincts. Better visualisation, calm and confidence would probably get him a career.

Also simply experience... you can visualise all you like but when a number of your goal attempts are snaps on the run, experience with the pace of the AFL will make a big difference if you have the fundamental capability to kick those shots - which we know he does.

Heard a lot of complaining in the crowd from Essendon supporters about Menzie always being our deepest forward and often battling v 2 or 3.

They clearly lack the cognitive dissonance to realise that he’s in that position because he worked his arse off to get to that contest when others haven’t.

You 1000% take a goal a game and a lot of territory covered for essentially a first year small forward, you’d almost take it from an experienced one.
