Player Watch #29: Will Phillips [Part II] - Extends to End of 2025

Feel for the bloke. Everyone's riding high tonight but he'd be one of the few down about his game.
You didn't rate his game. I didn't but beyond a minute or 2 I don't anyways. Super excited by the thought of George Wardlaw back in the side .
Parker is a brilliant addition for time in the middle. Powell has taken his game to the next level. LDU doesn't need to do everything now. Simpkin is getting more time in the middle and clearly enjoying himself. Sheezel, no need to say anything.
Phillips needs find a new home and we will wish him well and hope he succeeds.

Only 56% Time on Ground today, and subbed off 'injured' (I asked Patch Adams if Phillips was alright and he said yeah he's fine just 'dinged').

But in 56% TOG played a defensive role, has the second most tackles of anyone on our team (6), gave up no free kicks, and positively impacted the play multiple times.

Shame to see him get injured today because I don't think he would have been the sub otherwise. But I guess we'll never know.
Injured? Listed as tactical sub. Exactly the same as last week.

wore Clarry like a glove early on and his disposals were ineffective until late in the game after WP was subbed. I think we showed today our mids can match it with the best and no need for that defensive mid
You're saying he tagged Oliver? He certainly didn't and if he did he failed, Clayton had 36 disposals.

10 possessions including 2 kicks. Listed as a tactical sub. What's his injury? Glandular again?? Cmon mate, I guess we'll never know.

27 touches, 10 clearances and a goal up to 3 quarter time. If he was tagging it's certainly not great.

He tries hard and has some nice moments but I just don't see where his midfield opportunity comes from without injuries.

He certainly wasn't tagging, just some people trying to justify Will's game.

Why is the standard for Will always ‘had a nice couple moments’?

I’ve always wanted him to succeed because he is obviously a great guy, but sorry, largely unsighted and ineffectual.

A couple posters on this board seem to have to make a post after every game he plays, no matter how poor, to try and justify his game with statistical gymnastics. The disposal efficiency and game time is always a funny one. FYI, if all you do is handball, anything below 90% DE would be a grave concern.

I just don’t see it.
yea the problem with this thread is the overbearing positivity, no doubt about it.

You can not see it, that's fine, but having a go at looking at game time as "statistical gymnastics"? Probably the most basic level of anaylsis available.

Inevitable
Is this you announcing your arrival or an attempt at correcting my spelling error? Cause you're 2 hours late if the former, and let's not start that if it's the latter.

His good is really obvious, and his bad isn't great.

Yesterday wasn't his best game, but I was still disappointed that he was subbed off as I thought he was having an impact. At the end of the day he contributed to a win just as much as anyone else did

In fairness the AFL app did initially have it listed as injured but that might just be the default.

Come on, 2nd behind Dyldo, surely.

Stephens
Pink
McDonald
....
Daylight
Will

Until someone else runs defensively to do the little blocks and unrewarded stuff, I think he is safe. Someone has to.

McDonald won't be dropped. Look how well he played on the weekend when we were competent. Pink too - he'd make way for Logue, not another midfielder. It's stephens or Phillips. With a good chance the remaining player would either start as sub or be subbed.

The statistical gymnastics regarding game time is that he is having 50% game time because the coach agrees that the team would be better off with him subbed out. And even if you extrapolate the game time (which is generally a silly concept anyway as it doesn’t account for many variables, in particular that Will himself struggles to run out games), most players don’t play 100% game time.

And if you want to do that, you should compare his game time to Tom Powell, who had 73%.

Powell had 31 touches in 73% game time (and pretty impactful ones btw). If Will was given the same amount of game time, if we ‘extrapolate’, Will has 13 touches (instead of his actual 10).

Wow - an extra 3 hand balls. But just remember everyone, he only had 56% game time!
