Thread Cliff Notes

  1. Glandular
  2. As good as Rowell as underage
  3. Short, slow, can't kick
  4. Logan McDonald
  5. If you don't rate Will you don't footy
  6. Brownlow votes, Cunnington, lol haters

Seems to be a lot of chat about yesterdays result, as I haven't seen it, how'd Wil go.

1 being Glandular and 6 being Brownlow.

Half a game, very good in the contest with 5 clearances from 12 disposals. One over hit 25 meter pass and a couple of excellent to the hot spot entries into the F50 which lead to shots on goal. His issue will continue to be his dynamism outside the contest which might see him drop down the pecking order. Out of all the primary mids (LDU, Powell, Laz, Wardlaw, Simpkin) his running is probably the weakest.

Would love to know what the stats are for centre clearances we win when he is in the centre? Think when he gets it, he’s a smarter kick inside 50 than LDU and maybe Wardlaw.

no doubt. he's only second to Powell in terms of the quality and creativity of his actual disposal when in close. LDU and Wardlaw really power away and can get distance from the clearance but neither have Will or Tom's ability to actually find players from in to out

Love LDU and Wardlaw but they do tend to blaze away. LDU in particular seems to kick long and high off the outside of his foot.

I'm no football coach but his kicking action is something I'm surprised wasn't beaten out of him in juniors. Always raises the ball in his hands just before the ball drop, leans back, foot ends up pretty high on the follow through.

It's probably a credit to his skill that he still manages the odd (or even frequent) low-ish pinpoint pass with the way he kicks it. Not sure many others would even be able to manage that

How much can you really change those biomechanics though?

It just takes work.

I did it in my 30s, at least on my left foot. Partly because i was coaching kids and wanted to do it properly for them. I was still playing and my left technique did get alot better. Alot less pressure in the comp I was playing in tho.

It takes work and focus tho.

2 points that I agree on.
1: it can be done, like you, I changed my action, but in my mid 20s, there was actually nothing wrong with my old style, it got me to the elite level in junior footy, but thought I’d tinker with it as I aged.
2: I also wasn’t playing at the level he’s playing at, so clearly there’s more pressure to get it right.
it’s not disastrous, but he’s certainly prone to hitting a few shockers during a match.
Whoops, forgot this is the Whilphil page, back to normal programming!

I could be wrong of course, but based on speaking to Wardlaw today, plus him walking around fan day with an obvious limp still, and Will Phillips being named a started and Wardlaw being listed on an extended bench, I'm excited to potentially see a full game from Phillips tomorrow.

maybe but willphil is one of 4 players named in both teams which suggests to me he will play a half in each

But hope you are right and it’s a full game in the first game
