They follow it when England are winning, otherwise it's all a bit meh.

Its exactly the same as the Andymurryometer.

There was a site that measured how british Andy Murray was. When he'd lose, the percentage of news articles that called him Scottish would increase. "Scottish tennis ace, Andy Murray, has gone down in straight sets on Anna Kournikova" or something like that.

When he won, it was "British tennis star, Andy Murray, seals magnificent win over ..."

When he won Wimbledon, the Andymurrayometer hit 100% for the first time.

I know a Aussie cricket tragic living there. They don’t think it gets much coverage at all.
It’s all soccer, at least in London. Maybe other parts care more?
Cricket held it's own until the Premiership began in 1992 and football started to become respectable, then it just became a juggernaut.

keep saying Bairstow's laid very low throughout this, ironically perhaps the only one to realise they're better staying quiet rather than look like hypocrites.

reckon there's a fair chance he actually realised not long after he'd had a chance to ponder that he was a goose, even if his coach and team mates don't (publicly) say so

Does the Man of the Match award just automatically go to a player from the winning team these days? I swear it never used to be like this.

Taking nothing away from Smith's terrific performance, and as much as I hate to say it, Stokes' innings and overall match contribution warranted the MOTM award.

its a tough one don't we also have to take into account conditions? chances given ect? stokes innings was amazing but needed huge amount of luck and was done in very easy batting conditions smith on the other hand made his ton to set up match in by far toughest batting conditions of the series so far.

Cricket being taken off FTA and being shown exclusively on Sky hurt the popularity of cricket there too like it would do here if it was only shown on Fox.

Boycott and Morgan - what a couple of whiners.

It's funny hearing Piers say that The Incident will "fire up" the Poms to win the Ashes 3-2. Wishful thinking, tossburger! I don't agree with many things that Sam Newman says but I kinda agree with him when he'd always pipe on about milestone matches not making players put in their best effort, in that they should always be putting in 100% every match. It's a similar thing here. I'm hoping that the Poms have already put in their best effort (with the exception of Bairslow) and they continue to lose, despite being apparently "fired up".

Absolutely. You can't just go by raw numbers and the emotion of Day 5, so a strong case can be made for Smith. After watching almost every ball of the Test, I would have given it to Stokes though.

No, MOM goes to the player who most infuences the game.

smudge easily

Stokes heroics was an ultimate loss. where was he when the game was to be set up in the first innings? Batting with the best of the best conditions, he failed to give his side a chance to win without heroics in the 2nd innings...

Fail

The idea of milestone matches being games a side should win or motivate a side more had always been ridiculous, in all sports.

Did we win this test for Nathan Lyon’s 100th test in a row? Win the 3rd test for smithy’s 100th? Like why win these matches but not others?

Again that was pre Bazball, they have become enlightened super beings now thanks to their cult leader Baz.
They'll always come up with same reason that the Carey dismissal was different. The obvious one with Bairstow in the County Cricket match is that he's standing up to the stumps, but that makes zero difference. The ball becoming dead is really more based on the movement of the keeper than anything else - it's not even necessarily a time thing, although at some point an umpire can tell the keeper the ball is dead and to start moving it back to the bowler, or if it's the sixth ball just call "over".

FWIW I think the Bairstow decision in the county cricket game is correct as well. It's quite clear he hasn't made any movement to start sending the ball back to the bowler. He's still holding the ball very much in the region of the stumps. Now he can't do that indefinitely cause that game has to continue so I think it's up to the umpire after a couple of seconds to make the call this isn't going anywhere and call out "dead ball". That didn't happen, the batsman either lost his concentration or lost his nerve (didn't look like he lost his balance) and correctly lost his wicket.

No different to Carey - at no point does he stop the motion of the ball to make it seem like the ball has concluded.

Anyway, you're point is correct. For some reason or another, there will always be something different between examples like the Bairstow one in County Cricket and Carey's the other day, and even if we find one exactly the same they'll just fall back to pre-Bazball disenlightenment.
