Player Watch #30: Charlie Comben - defender or forward? CC T5 in the AFL for avg.intercept marks p/game - re-signed until end of 2027

I'd keep Comben back, especially on the first half of your comment.

If he has the potential to become one of the competition's best defenders, why move him forward just to play another player who will not be one of the best?

I think if the club can see Charlie going forward and becoming a good player, they would take that over Charlie being a very very good key defender.

We have glaring deficiencies up forward and besides Larkey we have no one else capable of playing the role to a decent standard.

That’s what the club will have on their minds. I’m not sure I agree with it but I think we’ll see Charlie going forward once our defence settles.

I don't buy the it's because it will stop him getting injured line. The club may well believe that, I don't.
Logue did his knee in of all places the backline.

The bloke is awkward and will always be at risk where ever he plays. The way he lands on the ground without protecting himself or naturally rolling to avoid injury amazes me. He's got the Sept 11's about him. As in he can fly but he can't land.

Yes that is a tad inappropriate. But it's not like America are an innocent bystander. Anyways Charlie is now known by me as Sept 11.

And yes Logue could go fwd, someone needs to .
The great white hope Bryn Teakle is the man to save us.

And I’m semi optimistic

Next year. A year in defence after 20 odd games, a big pre-season and he’ll be ready,

He is very similar to Tarrant.

Was handy forward, but elite back.

One guy I wouldn’t mind seeing have a go forward when Logue is back, is K Dawson.

Very athletic and a good reader of the ball. Worth a look atleast.
Will Dawson can certainly play fwd...with teakle coming to us.at least we have options

Yes well I watched his highlights and of course they are just highlights. He seems aggressive. Can mark and seems a decent kick.

I don't take much notice of what others say about players. I too am looking fwd to him getting opportunities. I liked what I saw.
At 25 I'm sure he will leave no stone unturned to make a good it.

And if this works I'm fine with Comben at CHB.
Bergman Logue Corr
Goater. Comben Hardeman

Same. If I was to guess I think the ideal would be to get him through majority of season and if possible Logue back. If they can have some overlap together before surgery that's a big bonus to see how they work together and / or push players forward to try things out.
Strikes me as something that will take a significant recovery time as well.

Exactly what he doesn’t need.

Agree, but he needs games more than anything at the moment so I get keeping him going, especially given the state of our backline. His fitness should be okay post op, will just be away from weights for a bit and no contact - but running will be back pretty quickly.

not much run & carry HBF in that back 6 . I would still leave Fisher or McKercher there.

Logue made it clear when he came to us from Freo that he came to us because we offered him a defensive role. He hated playing forward for Freo but he did not have spot there with the plethora of KPD Freo had and still have in their squad.

He said for Dawson to go forward not Logue.

Agreed, that’s why I said for Kallan Dawson to be tried forward and not him.

Logue should be in the backline.

But if we need him forward he plays where we need him.

We don't need anyone to be dynamic, we just need a matured body 2nd target in the fwd line.

With some experience, you never know what will happen.

You do need a forward who is dynamic. They will then require a tall defender to be accountable.

We have tried logs like CCJ, it makes it worse.

What Mason Wood did last week by blowing up McGovern and running him up field won them the game.

Yes this is true, a second tall forward who doesn't pose a threat by clunking contested marks or getting out on the lead or finding space is the easiest opponent to zone off and intercept.

he's 4th best for defensive intercept in the afl, why are we talking about moving him forward.
Because we lack structure up forward and leak oppo inside 50’s that inflate defensive numbers.

He’s been solid down back but there is certainly a justifiable case why we would swing him forward.

okay, but comben is one of the best defender not just at north but in afl, why are we doing anything to change that?

But thankfully by looking at the team sheet, they put pink on a forward pocket meaning he will play chf.
