Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

So I was supposed to ignore the post about two players who were completely different role players to Conca. Maligned with injury or not they never had spaghetti for hamstrings .I now comprehend
Thanks for the clarification
Considering you've had a go at Tunsky's reading comprehension skills, yes you should have ignored the roles of the players mentioned because the poster, ie me, made no comparison or even mention of their roles, just that all 3 frustrate(d) me as players to watch early in their careers and Conca is a better player than the other two.

So you agree injury free he has a place in the 22 now?
He has further upside from his level now?
If he has more injuries next year, we can get benefits by putting him on a reduced contract or getting a trade for him?

He is in the mix for best 22 ,but apart from the top 10 according to DH everybody else is fighting for a spot:p
Sorry i clarified that post ,go and read the edited version:$

OK. I agree with that. Will be an interesting preseason for him, especially when the praccie games start, because he should know he is not a walkup start so he'll need to put in some decent performances (and hope he doesn't hear 'TWANGGGG!').

IMO Conca is a good player when fit but where does he play cozy it's certainly not in the midfield because there are more than enough better midfielders than him

it's not HBF or HFF as we are well covered there

it's not small forward as Edwards or Rioli have more scope there than RC

he has been played at Back pocket as he has been tried and failed there

so at best he is on the bench for rotations but we are getting a lot of depth and some new talent that offer more x factor than Reece

previously he would have been a walk up start in our 22 but we are better now and I think he is now in the depth bracket IMO

Sorry when has he played back pocket? I missed that one!

What is Conca elite at?

Allegedly he is an inside mid, don't know where he is hiding then coz we have been screaming out for an inside mid?

At best he is a rotation, or a winger or flanker, unfortunately for Reece we now have players that are bigger, faster, taller and stronger bodies....

He may get games but he will need to be very fit and very good

He was injured for almost all of last year mate. You can't question where he's been.

Not sure what everyone's obsession is with size, there's a lot more to being a good inside midfield other than size look at Miles, was our best inside midfielder last year. He's only 179cm & 80kgs...

I have a lot of hope still for Reece, I felt his first two seasons at the club where as good as just about anyone in his draft class, he just never kicked on and struggled to take the next step. He's been looking in good shape from photos of him in preseason, if he can still fit for all of the pre-season I really think he's going to prove a lot of supporters wrong.

Imo he has, he was the only guy in and under particularly laying tackles on the oppo.

the problem is balance as our starting group of miles and cotchin are both small'ish we need a big guy in there.
Conca may be able to rotate thru when miles or cotch rest forward but that means a Fwd needs to go to the bench

You may be right, it was a while ago. I do remember Conca being towled up by Milne in one game.

I could see why Milne could be a problem for Conca given his agility comparison. Highlights the importance of Conca to get fitter and focus on his other attributes to negate opponents and win the ball himself with positioning etc... It would be a great way for Conca to improve his development

Last year was a write off and he hasnt been able to stay on the park for one reason or another for most of his career thus far.

I dont think he will ever be a star, but I have seen enough to suggest the talent of a B+ midfielder is there, just my opinion. Casting my mind back to a game where he played as a real dashing ball carrier with a hard edge against the Cats a couple of years ago and 2013 year where he was crucial to us which showed when he went down early against the Blooze in the EF.

The boy can play.

Also probably didn't help that it was Conca's seco d career game.

I have been a Conca advocate, however, time to put up or move on. If the guy isn't playing consistent football by 5 or 6 games in and doesn't get 15 -16 games in for the year minimum , then trade or delist.
