Throughout the history of all great AFL teams I can't recall any with 3 A Grade KPD? I want Balta, Gibcus and Trainor to be played together as often as possible here on even copping the shellackings. We're building for more Premierships not to be just contending again. Miller and Young need to be overlooked for our future more often than not. In a perfect world Gibcus's injuries are behind him and Trainors concussions are in the past. Balta is a genetically gifted freak now in his prime ready to step up and mature to become the man. He can take the Gorillas and play against taller opponents by virtue of his leap. Gibcus looked destined to become the perfect opponent for all these modern 200cm KPF like Kings, McKay, Darcy, with pretty decent kicking skills. Trainor appears far taller than 193cm and could keep growing closer to 200cm? His intercepting and kicking skills are sublime and hopefully becomes an unbeatable 3rd tall who can peel off his lesser opponents and carve oppositions up.

I'm glad we've got Rutten as coach, can see these 3 forming an unbeatable backline in years to come. As good as our premiership KPD were Rance was A++, Grimes A, Astbury more a C+/ B- at best. Can envision all of Balta, Gibcus and Trainor being A/ A+. Their differences compliment each other and if Balta can eradicate short kicking and Brain farts, then 2027 onwards our backline could be near on unbeatable. By then Broad will be gone, most likely Short also, Vlastuin on his last legs. Hopefully Brown can take over from Vlastuin. Just need to find a small lock down defender and a gun running HBF and our backline should be set.
surely this ends miller's career just use him as back up only he was putrid last season unless try him forward but i cannot see that happening

Most out of touch thing in this post is saying Astbury at best a C+/B- type player. Would go back and watch 2019 to his retirement again because he ain't no C grade player.

He didn't get it as much as say Grimes or Balta but he did do a lot of stopping and big contest killing spoils or Marks.

Yep, as a pure stopper, elite and just as important as the other guys mentioned.

Career average loss rate of his 1:1 defensive contests of about 25%. Very similar to Alex Rance.

Fewer possessions, less dynamic, but structurally critical for Richmond. Very underrated.

Astbury also showed how important he was in 2018 ( when he played ill), structurally we had no answer

He actually wasn't bad at start of season. I remember they put up a stat and he was the best 1:1 contested kpd across the entire comp by midpoint of the season. Funnily enough Norths $ million dollar recruit McKay was almost the worst. Miller also was elite for spoils and the fact he's versatile to play ruck and fwd he'll have suitors.

Gibcus won't be rushed, Trainor will be eased in and 10- 12 games would be a great result. Miller will play, but him and Young must be phased out. Blight deserves opportunities also.

Contracted spud Esava Ratogolea netted 25, 76 and 94. Miller should easily net a pick ranged 30 - 35 too.

Already done this but here is our players or in this case our defenders in relation to where they went in the draft.
If Rioli had stayed the worst pick would have been Balta at #25. If Rioli had stayed though we would not have Smillie.

Vlastuin 9 - Balta 25 - Trainor 21/Smillie 7
Brown 17 - Gibcus 9 - Smith 49.

The only thing i can think of why we will not go with the above set up is lack of experience. Playing 4 defenders with less than 20 games is probably not going to happen a reason why Broad will likely still play in defense.
Personally id go with that team and have Broad as the seventh defender or starting on the bench or even on a wing.

What we currently do not have is Vlastuin and Broads replacement and we certainly have not replaced Rioli.

The current small medium options are
Short - a dud. 29yo who has to go. Really cannot stand this player.

Smith - a junior who went in the nd at pick 49. The thing about Smith is he displays top end attributes and may be the Rioli replacement we are looking for.

Brown - looks like a good replacement for Vlastuin nice height at around 190cm give or take depending on who you talk to.

Trezise - sort of a year he has to show improvement good mover decent pace accountable does have some good attributes but has things that need work. maybe a Vlastuin replacement.

Banks 29 - Most have him pegged for a wing but he has good attributes for a running hb role. in fact was drafted as a hb..

Bauer msd - Yep most do not want him played here but at 192/ 89 he is similar to Broad in fact a far better option in the air.
May not be as quick as Broad but have a look at him he is a good mover and uses the ball well. Maybe we have Broads replacement right under our noses. We have already had a glimpse of him running of hb and using the ball real well. Its not as if he is foreign to defense he is a legit Utility.

Smillie 7 - well he is a mid of course but he has already shown he can play in defense.I am not averse to starting him as a defender just like the pies did with Daicos. Especially with trainor tipped to be eased into it early season.

there is potential for Clarke, Campbell, and Green to be played across hb or on a wing in particular Campbell..

Harrison Oliver is a kid i was really hoping we would get but he didn't quite last to our picks.

Fair chance for round 1 I reckon.
Reckon he'll have to rip it up to make R1. Although if they play him as the spare then his obvious talent would work. But he then takes Vlas' spot. Can't see that. But he'll play I reckon, far too much talent not to.

Blight should be in the back 6 by end of season, either full back or interceptor, he is a great mark, great leap, strong & athletic !!

Hard to see him getting the job as the free intercept player
Vlossy is still our best by a significant margin and we think Brown would be the one earmarked to be his replacement due to his kicking abilities

This kid has tremendous skills and poise. Can mark and spoil equally as well and will be a vital link player. We are lucky to have him and in years to come new players will be playing the Trainor role as opposed to him being compared to others. He will be different but good different.

I haven’t seen brown display any intercept ability tbh. Not saying he couldn’t get there in the future, but thus far all he’s .done really is a few nice field kicks. Blight is a far better interceptor than Brown imo.

Selling Astbury a bit short there mate, the man was an A- easily and being a bit slower than than Rance A+ and Grimes A, His quick and ambidextrous lightening hands made up for it with superb strong marking and spoiling (Dave took 10 or more marks in heaps of games which is only comparable to the Richo days) and he was The Rock of Gibraltar that made them and our back half runners so bloody good.

In fact I'd argue with anyone that our back 6 was comparable or better to any All Australian side of that period.
