AFL Player #31: Zach Reid

True. Right now they just have to work at getting him back for next year and see where it goes. I have some reservations but there is not point cutting our losses now. We need a forward maybe we send him to the other end to try his luck as I do not see him as the answer to our full back problem.
He’s under contract for 2 more years. So let’s just get his body right for starters. Hopefully he can get through 2024 preseason/ season without any issues. Maybe an extended lay off will give him so more time for his body to settle down.

This whole ‘let’s take a long term, considered approach to player rehab’ thing has done wonders for a lot of other players on our list.

He’ll come back bigger and better.

Yup, cause a guy who has played 63 games in 7 years due to injury and form is the picture of reliability, obviously.
If we are going to be totally fair a lot of his early VFL games where due to him being a young KPD and not injury. Not that I am saying his last couple of years are not a concern or that he is exactly the bloke we need but we do need a FB and personally I do not think it is Reid even if he does get on the park.

I have reservations about bigger. He has no definition at all.

Hmm. These issues genetic? Maybe enough to have his brother slip to our pick?
His brother is a bigger unit for the same age. Zack 202 82kg draft year . Archer 203cm 93kg draft year. Zack is listed at 90kg now.

On a 205cm frame he could put on 10 kilos and you probably wouldn’t even notice by looking at him.

Langford and Caldwell have certainly returned from hammie surgeries stronger and thicker through the core.

I have had a look at his brother in a few games. You can see it in him. Same height and actually 3kg heavier than what Zack is listed at now. The issue is Zack has put on 8kg and looks the same. He was 200cm and midfield weight when he was drafted (82kg). We are trying to put 15 to 20kg on him and also have him a prime athlete. All things being equal he was always going to struggle. He is not going to be around his prime weight until he is 24/25. He is the exact danger of drafting young blokes who need to put 15kg on the frame in the current system where you are also pushing for quick results due to list size and the need to turn players over. Cox is in the same boat. The only difference for him is he has the engine , pace and agility to be able to play an outside position like a flank (or wing if he can work it out). Zak has been a KP player.
Langford or Caldwell is a bit of an apples and oranges comparison because neither where needing to put on 10 plus kg along with retaining peak fitness.

Yeah that’s the throw away line everyone has been using who have no idea.
Forgot to mention he only played 4 games in his first 4 years. So about 70 the last 3.5 years since he was in AFL team mid 2020 season and one year being shortened by Covid and north not playing finals means he actually has been pretty durable. Especially given how much work he has had to be doing down back. Obviously you don’t mention/know that though

Reid has played more than 4 games in his first 4 years so I guess he's better than McKay after all.

Why did he only play 4 games in his first 4 years?

I still don’t know why people are putting all their hopes on Reid and don’t want a back up plan. Funny how experts and club are saying we need a KPD and the club is going after him but apparently you guys are the experts haha.
Funny you guys bring up games played and when it’s pointed out he’s been durable last 4 years you want to talk about 4-7 years ago

Because Scott had him developing in the VFL rather than pushing him along early. Like we should have done with Reid :thumbsu:

Nah mate you put 2m tall players straight in AFL against players 15-20kg heavier don’t you??

We're not. We're also not one big homogenous person. If you want to reply to something someone said, quote them so they can at least figure out what the hell you're on about.

Most of us are scarred from Gumbleton and Pears and all the others, but we can still face the reality that the club has tied him to the bandwagon until at least the end of 2025. He's not going to be traded and McKay isn't going to get his spot on the list. If he were to come it'd be Stewart's spot he'd be taking.

Besides all that, if you want to talk about acquiring McKay, go and discuss it in the trade thread.

If you’re going to quote something from me then then tell me to make sense, don’t go saying things that I didn’t say. When did I say we will or should trade Reid? Mckay take Reid’s spot? Where did I say that.
Make sure when you quote me you quote something I say

Reid has olayed double than that already, so must be on track then

He has played 63 games total.... so I don't know how you got to 70 in 3.5 years.
You know, Maths and all.

Yeah, he has been stellar. I mean watching him defend like a caravan with the best of them with quiet amazement.
