even with the kicking problems, i still like him, alot.
His kicking is shizen, but he finds the pill naturally, he always seems to be in the right spot somehow, and then butcher the ball.
the kicking can be taught, the footy smarts can't be.

the focus last summer was getting big, the focus this summer has to be working on skills, 24/7, dont let the bastards leave!!

You think. I would have thought that his biggest flaw, other than the obvious, is his inability to get enough of the pill.

poor phrasing by me, for mine he's never going to be a 30 disps a game guy, but like boomer harvey (who he should have watched incredibly closely on sunday) he just seems to bob up where the ball is and have what should be really crucial touches (this is where the kicking comes in)

Re: #32: Travis Colyer - Kicking still an issue?

Think the issue is that Colyer needs to tidy up his kicking - Would rather have a guy take a ping from 40 on a decent angle.

Prophetic words.

Surely he couldn't kick as poorly next week.

Why not?

You need only look at him running into an open goal against Melbourne this year, or even that wobbly thing that went through for a goal in the NAB series. Or missing a set shot directly in front in the EF.

There's something fundamentally wrong with his kicking, has been for a long time.

He had 2 really nice spear passes, 1 of which hit Crameri on the chest. (Note: Was at the game and they looked really nice but I've been told 1 of them didn't spin). But he did have his classic shockers.
It was a miracle that both passes landed on a chest. I couldn't even be confident that he was even passing it to Crameri. I thought the passes looked a lot better on replay than at the game.

I honestly think he set some sort of record with the most completed kicks without actually kicking a drop punt. I can't remember one that spun correctly. That's just unheard of.

And towards the end you could tell his confidence was shot when he just kicked into the man on the mark.

That ain't confidence. That's just what he does. Often.

It's more the grubbers rather than the rotation that gets you worried.

Do you think it is something that can be corrected or will we just have to live with it?

I'm honestly not sure.

Didn't Watson suffer from the same thing early on in his career? bit of hard work by trav he could turn it around surely?

Although on that note id love a pre season with a very heavy skills focus. I rate our fitness and that's no reason to back off on it, but it seems skills are letting us down more than fitness each week.(possibly desire as well)

Not really. Watson seemed to misjudge his kicks more than flat out couldn't kick at all. Colyer can't get the ball to move smoothly through the air with any kick, on target or otherwise.

Has the pace and talent. Just needs to spend every waking moment practicsing his kicking. How the freak can you kick those beautiful Sherrins so poorly? It is a beautiful thing to kick them well and feel the crisp snap as you boot the ball perfectly.

Not too late to remodel his technique. Not an overhaul, just tweeking to make it smoother. Would prefer to lose penetraiton for now and gain accuracy.

What does Colyer need to do in 2013 to break into the best 22?
Is it his last chance? Can he do it?

Quick answer- fitness. He was just not fit this year, and as a mid he is just not there yet.

Thumb injury came at such a bad time. Looked like he had a great pre season.
I would say fitness and definitely kicking.

Hope he improves as he is great to watch.

Yes, look he will never have great disposal but as an inside mid...that hasn't stopped others. I do believe he could be our rover in the future.

Don't think his suited to a small forward role, would more like him on the wing and breaking lines. Seen nothing to date that makes me think he can be a crumbing small forward. Much more natural midfielder than small forward.

Im not sure what his best position is. On a wing hes to small in height wise and probably not fit enough elite wise and isnt exaclty an outside quality user by foot. Hes a natural onballer but unfortunatly his 75kg 174cm frame just doesnt hold up against the 90-95kg Okeffe, Watson, Swan, Ablett, Judd, Kennedys ect. The only way i can see him making it is as a small forward or half forward. Certainly played both positions to great success as a junior and at Trinity. Although from talking to him hes looking to get to 80kg and be used as a midfielder - dont think he will make it.

Kicking, kicking and more kicking.

Actually his last game was excellent in terms of winning the ball, running into space, crumbing the ball, rading the play - BUT his kicking.

Needs to clean up his disposal for sure.

He also needs to add a physical element to his game. Even when he plays well at the moment he is not tackling and harassing anywhere near enough.

While the disposal is frustrating it is his total lack of physicality that is keeping him out of the side.
