Joel Amartey
Joel Amartey has shown strong form in the ruck and as a key-position player at both ends of the ground since being drafted to the Sydney Swans as a rookie ahead of season 2018. The Ghanaian-Australian produced arguably his best performance of the 2019 season against Sydney University in Round 6, which saw him collect 42 hit-outs and a goal. In season 2020, he made his AFL debut against Brisbane Lions in Round 17 after producing some strong individual performances in scrimmage matches, and impressed with eight hit-outs and two inside 50.

DOB: 02 September 1999

Jonathan Brown last night asked whether Sydney can win a flag with Armatey & McLean as key forwards.

He clearly doesn’t rate either.

And given Joel has kicked 4 goals in the 8 weeks since the 9 goal game (and looked ineffective most of the time), I’m finding it hard not to share Brown’s concern.

C’mon Joel - prove Brown (and me) wrong.

Big key forwards don’t win premierships, they just need to compete, take the odd contested mark, and bring the ball to the ground for the smalls

It’s very rare for KPFs to have a day out in finals football

Back when he arrived, a Bulldog-supporting mate and I used to joke about the BISP's grandstand shuddering every time Big Joel got into full stride.

Mate was a apparently a pretty decent full-forward in his day and on the odd occasion we'd go to the footy together, whether pre-season out at Blacktown or H&A at the SCG, he thought it was laughable Joel was still on our list.

He joined me again last night live and has succumbed to the greatness of our club, buying his first pieces of Swans merch and wearing them proudly.

Not surprisingly after Joel's significant contribution, mate is now calling him Plugger :)

He's a conundrum to me, he doesn't crash packs or take marks consistently enough. He's not good enough to work around these issues and be a consistent goal scorer.

What is his purpose?

I'd tell him the expectation is you ruck & play fwd. Him v Mclean for the fwd/ruck role or someone else. He's not good enough to play as a fwd only.

We don't have anyone good enough to play KPF full time (including Logan).

Good athlete

That’s his ceiling imo

Jessie white like
Nah, he's better. Needs to be more consistent though.

Would make him work almost solely on rucking and judging the ball in the air in the off season. Was a better ruck than McLean 2 years ago, don't know where it went.

Have them fight each other for a spot (figuratively).

Injury pretty much stopped him rucking.

There is such a minuscule difference between them statistically. Joel kicks slightly more goals, but white beats him on a lot of other stuff (including contested marks).

I was a big fan of Jesse, he was just playing in the wrong era in which there were so many power forwards. In this team I rekn he'd look like prime plugger in comparison to Amartey tbh, he was a very solid contested mark.
