Joel Amartey
Joel Amartey has shown strong form in the ruck and as a key-position player at both ends of the ground since being drafted to the Sydney Swans as a rookie ahead of season 2018. The Ghanaian-Australian produced arguably his best performance of the 2019 season against Sydney University in Round 6, which saw him collect 42 hit-outs and a goal. In season 2020, he made his AFL debut against Brisbane Lions in Round 17 after producing some strong individual performances in scrimmage matches, and impressed with eight hit-outs and two inside 50.

His kicking looks a little dodgy to me - the ball drop looks like it could go just about anywhere. But his athleticism, tackling, marking, and leap are more than enough to get excited about. Hoping he stays consistent and even if he doesn't play every game for the rest of the year (he's a young tall after all) that he stays consistent with his application. After all this, he genuinely looks like he could be something!

He looks alot more mobile and athletic than what he did pre injury in his debut and previous years in the twos.

Reid straight back in once fit but feel assured that Amartey will be the one who takes over once he is finished.
He was always mobile. I watched his first matches before he got injured in the reserves. He was sensational. But then that bloody injury that killed the rest of the season effectively. Then he came back next season and played some really exciting footy. Then same happened, he got injured and the injury kept recurring.

He has onky really payed one season for us and that was last year in the Scratch matches other than 2019. He has been in wonderful form in the Twos. He took 15 marks in one game and had 26 disposals, kicked 3 goals. He is ready. Even against the Hawks it was him who pooped up and took a big mark on the wing but he had few friends that day. They were out to lunch.

That would leave a big mark on the wing

Watch him as his confidence grows, will be interesting to see how he takes his new found status

Seems to play with a fairly laidback attitude. I'm not sure he realises how good a player he could become with just a bit more grunt.
I say that without knowing Joel personally. Sometimes laidback players can be super competitive on the field.
I'm looking forward to seeing how he continues to develop this season.

Amartey has been one of the biggest surprises of the year for me, I thought he was lucky to keep his spot on the list but he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

is taking an opportunity at the moment, will follow the next few games keenly

think opposition and media will take some notice now, so it becomes a real test

Super easy to get excited about a big man only for them to fade immediately. Because that's the nature of young (and even some experienced) KPPs. Have seen it with McDonald, McLean, and Amartey was awful last week. The nature of the position.

Whether or not he makes it long term, the best thing about this game was his aggro and commitment. It's been his knock in the ressies until this year - athleticism but doesn't impose himself. Well he imposed himself this week. If that's the thing that has been holding him back, he's shown he can overcome it. Now he just needs to keep doing it.

I hope he keeps Reid out. Shouldn't be too hard.

With the form Reid was displaying earlier this year think we could play both of them as their are hyper mobile.

If Amartey can keep that type of aggression in his performance, coupled with his athleticism we are going to be in a very good position moving forward.

Showed a bit of footy nous by holding his leads and spoiling the ball when he couldn't mark it or thought the opposition might mark it. Hope he continues to play his role as it's exactly what we need up forward.

Very true...

Joel must be pleased to hear Dean Cox:
"He is dynamic, he's explosive, he's powerful," Sydney ruck coach Dean Cox told AFL.com.au.
...
"His ability to fly for the ball and take contested marks but also be able to follow up at ground level, whether it be in the ruck or forward, has been a really good point of difference for us."
...
"He's put a heap of work in and now he's getting benefits from being able to get from contest to contest and not drop away as quickly.
"He's surprised me a bit with his consistency across his games. He's been able to stay in games for longer periods."

He's given himself every chance at succeeding at AFL level by looking pretty capable in a number of roles. Working up the ground to take contested grabs down the line, using his mobility and athleticism closer to goal, and competing well as a second ruck. Going well as a young tall if you've got your eggs in that many baskets
