Hopefully start to phase these sort of guys out as the youth develop. We've got a lot of players who are really good at nullifying their opponent but lack the polish to hurt them on the other way, kind of why we're seeing the scorelines we're getting. On a good day for us we'll shut their gameplan down, make it a slop and hopefully ass a few goals. See Melbourne 2014.

We need the guys who are in this bracket (McKay, Bonar, Turner, Hayden, Bosenvalagi) to develop offensive weapons. Can see McKay becoming a great intercept mark, Bonar needs to get his kicking right and Bos to provide more dash. Turner and Hayden are a fair way off this i feel. Would love to see Hayden as a forward and hopefully hit the scoreboard.

From what I've seen of Hayden in the midfield he does have the ability to win clearances and his disposal is much better in traffic. I think he's on a hiding to nothing in the backline though.

Agreed; the best game I've seen him play was in the middle against the Saints in the praccy game; got his share of it against a midfield that included Crouch and Zac Jones.

Certainly agreed, dont see him making it in our backline, which all of a sudden is pretty stacked considering who's on the sidelines.

Play him as a genuine ball winner because you surely cant have two taggers on rotations, at some point we need to learn offensive craft.

If Atu can play Hayden's backline position, then please for the love of god push Hayden up the ground, have him take Mahoneys spot while he has a magoos stint or have him roll in the mid as a lockdown tagger. I guarantee he'll flourish more than Turner can produce in the midfield who's just being a pest against his opponent, at least Hayden will get a touch of leather.

So guys that aren't good enough to play in the backline should play in the midfield? He should be in the VFL.

I think there are some attributes to work with which could see him be a decent player, but in the right position. As a backman its a write off.
There's probably about 5 or 6 ahead of him in the queue for an inside mid role and he is definitely not an outside mid. Close to the worst field kick in our team

I'd have him ahead of Mahony as a player, but we need players ready to replace them. Give him the year to see if it works and make the call.

I really struggled to deal with that missed pass on the outer wing to the left of screen. No one around him or the recipient, and the ball ends up out of bounds.

Same. I was more than prepared to cut him slack for all the mis-kicks last year but two yesterday in an otherwise anonymous game (but for the hit on Danger) have got me questioning whether it's still a matter of getting used to the pace, or a fundamental inability to hit targets.

People may like this from a toughness perspective but tactically it is boneheaded.

Leave two players free to go after someone with team mates in position to pressure.

Makes zero sense.

We have too many players that make tactically boneheaded decisions when pressuring opponents.

The ‘two rushing to one’ is the gold standard.

The problem with Hayden is he doesn’t look, he sees a Nth player and doesn’t sum up what else is around. He just kicks and turns it over.
Sometimes he misses the target by further than the target was away from him initially.

It’s quite an art form and talent to be able to do that as consistently as he does.

I just think he saw an opportunity to line up and potentially cause some damage to dangerfield and took it. He's only human.

Needs a few weeks in the twos. Looking forward to him fighting his way back into a winning side next month

maybe - but I noted with interest that following this hit, Dangerfield found a sudden reason to have his ankle checked, and with no doubt good medical advice, didn't return to the ground.

Hayden can improve his kicking, and maybe his tactical awareness too, but it's a lot more difficult to build an appetite for contact - you've either got it, or you don't, and Hayden does. A good platform to work on in a collision sport

Sort of. If football is a game of each contest or game in isolation - yes. If we played Geelong in a final next week though we'd be playing a wounded Dangerfield and the next time a player goes near the ball and Kyron they'll be looking over their shoulder. There is still a place for controlled aggression and sometimes the long game matters. It didn't lose us the game, it might win us one later. Your point is valid though, just not the whole story and it's not a black and white game. We saw Geelong players get out of the way of Cunnington this week because they know he commits to the contest.

100%. Given the backline - once fit - is looking the least of our problems now I'd be keen to see Kyron and Turner fight it out for that tagging role.
