Worth persisting.
He’s just trying a bit too hard atm but had the talent.

Way too team orientated when he’s got the ball i50 now, needs to be selfish again and look to score every time

At least he’s actually getting to the ball and getting shots on goal.
def improvement on last time he played
That’s all you can ask for as a player under 20 games
It will click soon enough

Don’t be too harsh campaigners
Everyone is super harsh cos we lost.

Yes he turned the ball over a bit. Happens when you are inexperienced and coming off a bye again.

Still deserves another crack next week

Playing like a bloke who fears getting dropped. Probably because they keep bringing him in for one game and then sending him back to VFL again.

Can tell he wants it to much, needs to relax !!
Lol I’d rather him wanting it too much than not enough

Just needs a run of games in the AFL, consistency builds confidence that helps relax

This ^ I literally saw Macontish on 3 occasions pull up in a contest where he could've impacted the play, and win the ball, but he lost it on all 3 occasions.
He didn't show enough desperation, whereas Cumbers was trying his guts out, and for his first game in a while to have 13 disposals, 6 marks, and 4 tackles we need to look at that as a positive.
Yep, he turned it over more than once but generally, he aint a bad kick, confidence will straighten that up.

As some of you would know I've been critical of Noah for all the reasons already mentioned by others, but last night was one of his better overall games for the year. He was lively inside F50, chased and tackled with intent for the moat part. Sure there were times where he didn't quite impact as you'd like, but I put that down to trying too hard rather than allowing it to happen. I see Noah a lot like Jack Ross, he needs that run of games to become comfortable at the level and gain confidence that he belongs. He's 22 and played 18 games, with this year's games being a run of 6, then a single game every few weeks where if he hasn't dominated he's been dropped. You can't build consistency and confidence playing like that. I'd have no issue with him playing the rest of the year.

On TV I noticed the ranga on Noah at stages.

Interesting metric of opponents "score involvements" to criticise his game. You work for Champion Data? I viewed the forward line INs of Cumbo, Bauer, Coultard as a combo of Miller, Mansell Cotch, Dusty. Job, 1: use Nank & Soldo vs Engish & Lobb. Which was successful as far as ruck work went but completely dominated by treloar, Libba & Bont. Out tackled. The ball lived in their half, and our backline couldn't handle it. A lot of dropped marks. Bauer dropped a sitter and made Miller look like a ball magnet. Coulthards pressure was OK but enough?
I'd've hoped Cumberland's set shot kicking would've improved, not to be. Other than that I liked his game. Fritsch ~ like.

Presents well on leads and IF the goal kicking can be fixed, then we have a great player.

In a smashing I don't know if Cumbo retains his spot.

I am just looking to try to explain the known facts:

- in Cumberland's 6 full game appearances in 2023 our record is 0-6.

- the Match Committee has Cumberland well outside of our best forward 7 despite his offensive output being stronger than most of his rivals.

I don't know what the result will be in advance, but let's have a look at an average scoring team to see what score involvements their defenders accumulate in matches on average. I will take 2 teams actually, Bulldogs, because Cumberland played 2 x full games v them, and Giants, who are the 10th highest scoring team in the AFL, so around average.

These are some of their defenders who have played most for them and exclusively in defence average score involvements per game across the season:

Bulldogs

Dale 4.2, Duryea 2.2, Richards 4.3, Johannisen 3.9, Jones 1.1, Keath 1.8, Gardner 0.7 so a combined average per match around 18.2 from their most common 7 defenders.

So this gives an idea of the amount of score involvements their defenders would normally expect to record per match.

2 matches V Richmond these are the Bulldogs defender score involvements:

Rd 4 - Dale 6, Daniel 4, Richards 3, Johannisen 3, Crozier 1, Bruce 1, Jones 0. A combined total of 18 score involvements - around their average.

Rd 21 - Richards 6, Duryea 5, Dale 4, Johannisen 4, Jones 1, O'Donnell 1(not sure who their other defender was, was it Williams 4? Or Poulter 5?) 25 or 26 score involvements combined. Way over average.

GWS are roughly an average scoring team so let's see how their defenders go for score involvements on average:

Whitfield 5, Ash 4.2, Taylor 2.6, Buckley 1.8, Haynes 2.6, Idun 2.0, Himmelberg 3(just used last 8 games when playing back) 21.2 is the average of these 7 players.

Let's also look at Richmond defenders where we are more confident with their roles.

Balta 2.4, Broad 2.2, Grimes 1.1, D Rioli 3.8, Short 4.2, Vlastuin 2.7, Young 1.2 17.8

So I think it is fair to say when we look at matches the defenders should get roughly 18-19 score involvements between them on average. We have already looked at the 2 matches v Bulldogs in 2023 where they got 18 and at least 25. Let's look at the other 4 full matches Cumberland has played in, v Lions, Suns, Demons(Rd 6), Swans(Rd 5):

v Swans - Fox, Blakey, Mills, Lloyd, Campbell, Florent, Gould, got 16 between them.

v Demons - May, Hibberd, Bowey, Lever, McVee, Rivers/Laurie(sub), and I am going to say Sparrow got 18 between them.

v Suns - Powell, Lemmens, Ballard, Collins, Weller, MacPherson, Long got 21 between them, which was shocking in such a low scoring match. Cumberland was essentially dropped after this match.

v Lions - Stracevich, Coleman, Wilmot, McKenna, Andrews, Lester and Payne got 37 score involvements between them and again Cumberland was dropped after this game.

So I think I can see a bit of a pattern here which suggests Cumberland will be dropped this week.

Opposition defender score involvements in the games he has played and resultant selection decision on Cumberland:

rd 4 oppo defender score involvements 18(normal range) Cumberland is retained.

rd 5 oppo defender SI 16(lower than average) Cumberland is retained.

rd 6 oppo defender SI 18(normal range) Cumberland is retained.

rd 7 oppo defender SI 21(huge in a low scoring match) Cumberland is subbed out early the following week v Eagles then dropped.

rd 16 oppo defender SI 37(way off the scale) Cumberland is dropped.

rd 21 oppo defender score involvements at least 25(very high) Cumberland is ???? - I think dropped.

I really don't know what has happened with the Cumberland topic, it seems you either need to hate him so much that you highlight and ridicule his every mistake. Or love him so much that you defend all of his mistakes like they aren't his fault.

I barrack for Richmond and want the team to win, I'm not on the edge of my seat hoping and praying for a moment of Cumberland magic/mistake to run into here and say "I told you so"

I think Cumbo is a good player, who is best 22. He has had a poor year, out of form, confidence clearly shot and making some poor decisions both with and without the ball. I agree that a new coach will do him wonders, he just needs to forget this season hit the pre-season hard and go into next year with a clean slate.

FWIW I think if you look at last nights game from an unbiased POV, I think you can see that he is working hard and chasing and tackling without the ball. At the same time he makes some real silly mistakes, for example the blatant push on English in the marking contest in the third. Not to mention some basic skill errors. Whatever the reason is, (I think you can see that he is over thinking and trying too hard) you can't be making those skill errors multiple times a game at this level.

Young player still finding his feet and learning. Has natural ability and can play, like I said I think he's best 22 especially considering how dysfunctional our forward line has been this year. Hope he plays next week and really should play the last 3, just to build some confidence heading into next year.

I think this is a stretch.

Played a Dogs side we were stiff to lose to first time.
played the Dees who beat us every time including last week when he didn’t play.
Sydney with half our side out.
Dogs again with half our side out.
Brisbane beat everyone there.

Only bad loss was Gold Coast who also beat us regularly

Maybe it was the wind. If he stays in the side he can prove us doubters wrong this week
