Super excited about this guy. I’m pretty sure I heard Hartley correctly when he said Sims kicked 7-goals in a match … in a half!

He also said he was still growing. And he’s a fantastic contested mark with amazing physical attributes who hits the packs hard.

Honestly .. what’s not to like about Sims? I love we didn’t cave to any average future trades to let this guy go.

Felt it was a weird selection with Faull and Armstrong already selected … but now I think he might end up being an absolute bargain in late-20’s. Let’s put it this way … at this early stage very happy we selected him over J Whitlock, Shanahan, Gerryn and Dodson, even though pre-draft I’d assumed they’d all go ahead of him.

Yep, lots of talls on the list.
Quality is the concern.

Rucks- OHB and Collina won’t make it. Samson has 3 more I suspect for depth. Nothing else except for Nank and now Sims? Am I missing someone?
Sims and Samson competing for the one spot in the 18 longer term.

Key Backs- Blight. Like him. Great mark, can read the play and holds his ground. Gets beaten on the burst so needs to improve that to make it. Kosi trialling down back.

Blight, Miller, Kosi and Young competing for one spot in the 18 longer term.

Forwards- Gray, Lefau and Bauer playing for one position as that third tall. Lynch takes the FF spot for 1-2 more years but need to plan for life after him.

Fawcett now competes with Armstrong and Faulk for two longer term spots in the 18.

If anything we have created depth at key back, FF, CHF, 2nd ruck and 3rd Forward spots.

Let’s see how they all develop over 2025.

Exciting times.
Ethan Read played 4 games as Witts injury replacement. If we aren't competing for anything, why not Sims getting games ahead of Ryan? If Lynch misses at all, why not Sims?

Ryan is still a year off.

The Dodson one is super interesting. I don't see how he is not good. I thought picking him made sense.

He is a 203cm ruck who is very athletic and plays like an extra midfielder. He averaged 17 touches a game and has clean disposal. He is a prototype modern day ruck. But there must a reason he went in the 50's. Reminds me of Arie Schoenmaker slipping last draft.

Having said that, Sims is intriguing with his size and high jump back ground. You see it in the vision in how he jumps over his opponent in the ruck or up forward. Also vice like hands. Now I've watched more of him I see plenty of AFL traits. I think he looks the second most promising tall we picked after Armstrong.

Yup, the point of my post was we have added depth at those positions. Up to the players that are good enough to earn the spot in the side. Some will fall away and off the list as well.

Like it or not the club obviously rates Samson to give him three years. They must have confidence there is development there still. But yes, if there isn’t and Sims overtakes him in pre season then I’m all for him taking a spot in the 23. Gotta earn it though.

Always liked him, he definitely has AFL traits, but he is a late developer. His previous year wasn’t much chop. Was still growing, and this year had some great games but inconsistent. A lower possession count than others too. I think he’s still finding confidence in his size. Great frame will develop and build strength and confidence.

Needs time, don’t throw him to the 🐺 🐺 🐺

If it comes to playing mainly as a key forward, these new guys probably will play ahead of Ryan. He is not a key forward.

If it comes to playing ruck, Ryan would of course be selected.

Ethan Read attended all of 12% of ruck contests in the games he played, so he did not play as a principle ruck.

Interesting to look at recent Premiership first rucks if you think this is modern day prototypical.

2024 - D Fort
2023 - D Cameron
2022 - R Stanley
2021 - M Gawn
2020 - T Nankervis
2019 - Ditto
2018 - S Lycett
2017 - T Nankervis
2016 - T Boyd
2015 - B McEvoy

Do you see a very athletic extra midfielder prototype pattern in that cohort?

I think Richmond prefers their ruck to put physical pressure on opposition players, esp mids.

What does Ryan's 3 years mean. F all really.
Player contracts are getting longer. Kosi should've been 2 years. It was 3. Chol to Hawks for 5 years as a 26 y.o. Balta 8 years. Ryan shouldn't have been extended on form. but 3 years at barely minimum chips salary was purely just securing ruck depth. Some trade value next year maybe.

I think the Naismith injury scared the club off a DFAgent. Like Knobell and we drafted a ready to go Sims.

Kosi was handy for back up ruck duties. In the past Soldo and other back up rucks often had very low TOGs.

Be perfect for a 18 y.o, Sims.

Ryan’s 3 years mean they rated him above the ability he had shown and believed he had a future at the RFC. It had nothing to do with future trade value.

Chol was 4 years with a trigger for a fifth. That’s standard for a club that’s trying to attract a talent across.

Kosi probably wouldn’t have moved over for 2 years.

Balta needed to be signed long term as he was a free agent next year and we were losing players left right and centre.

I’m not sure Knobel is injured like Naismith? Not sure what that sentence was all about? Knobel is a couple of years older and more physically ready to go in that regard.

I genuinely think he is, and will become more of a forward than a ruckman. However i think the ideal modern day ruck set up is with one key ruck and a second player who can back up/pinch hit when needed.

Balta and Miller have been doing that but I don’t want to see Balta continuing to do this and ideally Gibcus/Blight/Trainor will take over from Miller sooner than later.

I appreciate the argument that we need a pure ruck (which is true), but we also need someone (ideally a forward rather than defender) who can be a secondary ruckman. Faull, Armstrong, Gray, Lefau and Bauer are all 195cm and under so i don’t see any of them as suitable, Sims can offer us something very different to the other tall forwards on the list, his profile is also far more similar to Lynch than anyone else. I’m very excited!

This explains Blair’s draft hand, he’s secretly a Pokemon trainer. Gotta catch ‘em all!!

Is there a Pokemon called Ditto?

I met Pikachu once, in Gandy Street, Exeter. Coincidentally where JK Rowling is said to have written her first H Potter stories while sitting in a cafe. I lived in the area during the UK summers. I also started writing immensely popular literature when I was there. Unfortunately for me, it was on this forum.

Anyway, it was fortunate I happened to have 2 young kids with me at the time due to foolishly agreeing to shag their mother. I found Pikachu perfectly decent in the main, albeit a pretty quiet type. They(Pikachu) seemed to get along better with the kids. Pikachu upset me a little when they refused to sign something for me. I find it really disappointing how many celebrities refuse to sign blank cheques these days.

Tom Sims will be the greatest ruck/forward ever. He will make the likes of Polly Farmer and Tony Lockett look like Auskick kids

Why so glum? I've never seen you post so negative in your time here. :tearsofjoy:

You have to be a tad happy he was picked so we can finally get rid of Ryan in a few years though.

Samson Ryan will be the player that sets the standard for Sims to surpass.

Havent seen him in the training clips could be crook.
Watched the national champs GF again and this lad had a few moments. Nearly took a sky scraper, did take a solid mark, showed great speed but his kicking was shotgun although he has got distance in his boot accuracy might not be his forte.
Very likely prospect.
