Gabba, Brisbane
1:20pm Sunday November 7

Dead rubber and for the first time in a while it's the visitors with nothing to play for and hosts who are playing for pride. That doesn't include the captain who, despite having only played 1 day of cricket in nearly a month, gets a rest ahead of Wednesday's Shield game which is the 'ideal preparation' for the Ashes. Apparently that doesn't apply to Watson, Haddin, Clarke and whoever of White, Smith, Hauritz, McKay, Doherty and Siddle are in contention for the Brisbane squad. The good news is it gets Ferguson into the team, while Hastings, Doherty and Starc could all be a chance if they finally work out that Johnson, Siddle, McKay and Hauritz don't deserve to have any faith shown in them. They combined for 1 wicket in Sydney to take their series tally (including the T20 which Siddle and McKay played) to 4, the same number Doherty took in Melbourne.

Sangakkara says he wants a clean sweep, but I doubt that's at the expense of losing to Darren Sammy's Windies when the first test begins in Galle next Monday, so there could be a few players rested - himself at the top of the list with Jayawardene, Dilshan, Mathews and Malinga the other key members of the Test team, while they may not risk Murali ahead of his date with the surgeon next week.

"Rest" Siddle, Hauritz, play Starc (not a huge fan, but might as well roll the dice), Doherty.

Watson
Haddin
Clarke
White
Ferguson
Hussey
Smith
Johnson
Starc
McKay
Doherty

Weak bowling lineup, but we already knew that. At least Starc brings something unknown to the table. Either we'll bowl worse than we already are (no biggie; a loss is a loss), or we might just bowl well enough to grab a win.

Ferguson with a chance to cement his place in the lineup, and Smith holds his spot at 7. I'm hoping he gets a decent bowl today, but then it's at the Gabba, so there's no guarantee. If he plays, Doherty's clever darts will be more effective than Smith's leggies. If Hauritz plays (which is likely, unfortunately), he can probably utilise changes of pace to be effective, which neither Smith nor Doherty, from what I've seen, tend to use, but we'll see.

If Ferguson bats well today and Smith fails with the bat and ball, he might even knock Smith out of the side. It would be hard to argue against it either. I want both players in the side!

Good way to attract a crowd, rest Ponting.
It's not really a rest, Ricky wanted to go and play in 2 Sheffield Shield games for Tassie to get ready for the Ashes, which I think all the test players should be doing, and we should be having a bunch of kids play today.

Oh well, I still can't believe Australia are favourites for this game (again), hasn't the public learned that this side simply sucks.

Also waiting for those words "Doherty's not playing" to come out of Clarkes' mouth, I won't watch if they don't play him and Ferguson today.

Fair enough. Poor fixturing I suppose is the answer. It just annoys me to go and watch an International without the best players playing. They used to do it with Gilchrist.

Clarke says he knew Ponting wouldn't be playing this game for a while, but Ponting said when he came back how he was looking foward to the next 2 games? Also sounds like Doherty has edged ahead of Hauritz in the one day format, listening to Clarke then.

Good to see the side shaken up a bit, no Siddle is a plus, Ferg in, hopefully Doherty can follow up on his debut to edge Hauritz out of the side completely

You won't get that with either. May as well go for the younger one.
Well, just looking at his wonderful long career in ListA.... he's averaging 28 with an Economy of 5.18. Jake Haberfield from SA has a better average, similar economy.. yet won't even see his name mentioned, ever. Even though he is only 3 years older and played only 17 games so you could use the "Potential" bullshit on him.

Can someone explain why they played Doherty, droppped him and are now playing him again? What did they learn about Haurtiz that they didn't already know from the SCG game?

Haberfield doesn't wear blue.

I reckon they just wanted to see if Hauritz could earn his spot back. After listening to Clarke before, I reckon Doherty has edged ahead of him in this format.
