One of the main reasons we broke the game open.

His shovel work in that opening 10/15 minutes set up numerous forward thrusts.

Got to give credit to Laidley for moving Thomas up to the wing in the 3rd qtr, too. The pace that him & Wellsy showed, Collingwood just couldn't match.

Add Boomer and Flash in to that mix and we simply burnt 'em for speed.

Very much so. People around me were saying the same thing. Collingwood looked slow in the second half.:thumbsu:

bloody good in the centre tonight was Harro. seemed to spend a lot of time off the ground though, and this was quite noticable. can we clone him?

Well, his first half was pretty poor so he & we needed that second half, big time.

Harris was definately the reason we came back. Did anyone else notice that when Harris went off that the Pies started winning the clearances?
Yeh mate. Il tell ya i was absolutely going nuts. I had a look in the middle and i think it was simmo brady and power in there. This was after we had kicked 4.1 and the pies had kicked the steadier. I looked in the middle and im like 'Where the f__k is harro'. Was absolutely givin to dean thinkin we got em on the ropes why take him off. But harro hadn touched it in the 1st half and to come out and do that means hes a champion. Needs swallow to chop him out tho.

I agree... it was definitely noticeable - pity he runs out of puff too easily... if he could fill that role more would definitely give us a lot more potency as a team.

Harro was so great he just kept on poppin up with the ball in those centre breaks was very valuable helped set up the win.

Harris overcomes the hurt of Laidley's lambaste
Emma Quayle | July 27, 2008

DANIEL Harris is human, which meant it hurt to be singled out by his coach twice in the past six weeks, and that he was embarrassed when people outside North Melbourne found out it had happened.

"I think anyone would be affected by it," said the midfielder, who has incurred Dean Laidley's post-game wrath at least twice this season, and been left wondering if his place in the team would be yanked away from him.

"I was thinking about my future, wondering where my football was at and where it was going, I suppose. I still have next year on my contract and, hopefully, I've got many more years here. But at 26, I should be in my prime at the moment and so thoughts go through your head.

"I wasn't sure I'd stay in the side. It was touch-and-go there for a while, I suppose, but thankfully the coach is backing me in. It was a hard time, but it was challenging, too. It was a challenging moment in my career, probably the most challenging I've had. Maybe I needed that. Maybe the whole team did, in a way."

At question, among other things, were the 26-year-old's consistency and attack on the ball — the level of reliably hard-at-it support he was giving Adam Simpson and Brent Harvey — after a bad game against Fremantle was followed by a great game against Hawthorn, and then a three-possession second half against St Kilda. Last Friday, his urgency helped North Melbourne overcome Collingwood after half-time and string together two wins for only the third time this year.

To be criticised by his coach was tough, partly because it all became public knowledge, and partly because it had never really happened to Harris. But after 7¾ seasons, it also gave him a better understanding of what he means to his team now, and what his team needs from him.

That is, says Harvey, something all good players must move through. "I think, initially, he didn't take it too well. It was pretty public and everyone knew about it, but Dean grabbed him and had another chat with him afterwards, to reassure him, and since then I think he's handled it all really well," he said.

"It's something you need to get used to as you get on in your career, I suppose. He knows that he has a huge responsibility to win the ball and that if he doesn't, when he goes away from doing that, his football just isn't as good.

"I guess the next thing after that is that the side suffers for it, and it's probably a good responsibility to have. Dean's said it before, that when Daniel Harris plays well, the North Melbourne footy club plays well.

"I think that's why he rides him pretty hard, because he is so important for us, and I think Harro's got his head around that now.

"He's in the same category as Daniel Wells. When he plays well, we usually have a good win. He's got a lot of influence now, how he plays really matters."

Harris' response both times his place was questioned was to think about the things he knew he did well, about how he had always been able to do those things. Most of all, he thought positively. "A lot of things went through my head, but basically I was just thinking, 'What can I do to get better?' 'What can I do to make Dean think differently and keep my spot in the team?' I wanted to know what my role was, and just play it.

"There was no point in walking around with my lip on the ground. You've got to get on with things and I was lucky, I had 40 good mates around me and they all supported me and backed me to the hilt. I drew a lot of confidence from that and I have a lot of belief in my own ability, which helped.

"I think a bit of a line in the sand's been drawn now, and hopefully we can move on from there.

"If I can play my role and continue to improve as a footballer, then I think I should keep my spot and, hopefully, it's something the team will benefit from as well.

"We've got a core group and whenever the core group plays well, the team seems to go well," he said. "I suppose throughout your career, that's the thing you want, that's where you want to get to.

"I'm eight years in and you get to the point where things are expected of you and you have to lead from the front.

"The guys will follow if you do that and if you're not leading from the top, then the guys underneath are going to take your spot.

"It's as easy as that, so there's pressure on you from week to week with playing as well as you can, and then there's also the pressure to develop the younger guys, to be a custodian and make sure they're coming through as well. There's a balance you have to find."

He should talk to Brent Harvey.

Harvey could be frustratingly inconsistent when he was Harro's age. But he's matured brilliantly.

If we could get Harro to Harvey's current level of consistency, I think we'd be 3 ladder positions better over the season.

Gee, he didn't get much of the footy yesterday.

The paper points out today that at one point he had 6 touches to his opponents' 16.

I love him as a player, but I wish his "down" games were a bit better.

He has to be close. So frustrating because when he does turn it on for a quarter it makes all the difference. Last week vs Collingwood was a perfect example.

But he is the most inconsistent player in our side and he was shocking against Brisbane last time.

Might be saved by the fact that the VFL (see Swallow) didn't play this week.

He has been very ordinary lately except when he seems to get a rev up from the coach, time for a spell and maybe move him on next year?

I hate to say it but Harro just falls short of what we need. Great clearance player but hasnt got the engine or the skills to hurt the opposition.

I thought his skills were very good on the weekend, but definately didn't get it enough. The question is who do you replace him with? Swallow maybe, Grima, nah, Sinclair, he he .

Still leads the tackles and has had some excellent games this year. I would back him in.

But he's not doing enough. For a 26yr old who has been in the system 6 years and has played over 100 games 11 possessions in a game against a weak side is not good enough. He's played about 3 decent games this year. Has by far been our most inconsistent player. We can't afford to have a player as important to our fortune's as Harris playing the way he is - 1 good game followed by 2 bad one's. If he plays next week the way he played yesterday we'll get beaten for sure, especially against a side where the midfield is the key to beating them. He'll retain his spot due to the fact that there really isn't anyone to come back in at the moment, but if he doesn't bring his A game next week then it's time to have a spell.

I think he has had enough chances, and rev-ups from the coach! Leave Grima in and reinstate Sinclair to the mid-field.

Yep. Lets drop him for the Brisbane game. Yeah against a team that relays strictly on midfield clearances to win.

Look he was crap yesterday, but he was really good in the second half against Collingwood & was good against the Power.

We need him against the lions & his in & under work.

Agree completely.

Harro can by no means be proud of his possession count but his in and under skills in contests is invaluable.

He wasn't the worst yesterday and will keep his spot.

might be the only reason that we notice when he is down is because he is not getting a chop out by someone of equal ability. with someone else to help him out/rotate with that is equally good in close, then if he is down, the impact may not be as great. had good delivery yesterday into the forward line and was up against a tough nut in Nathan Jones and was tagged early. will be as happy as Blake Grima to see Blake Grima in the team.

The skill bit just isn't true. While it would be nice if his top pace was a little bit faster, his tank was a bit bigger or he had an extra 5m on his kicks, his skill level is definitely damaging enough. As an example, check his delivery into the forward fifty twice hitting forward targets during yesterday's game.

Of course his woeful inconsistency this season is another matter altogether.

Is Harris the new Brown?

Thank god for you Nick_Rooboy... I thought I'd wandered onto the idiot board.

still had 4 clearances yesterday, and nearly always hits the target by hand. If he can get another 4 and maybe a couple more i think we will have a good game this week. He can't always have the 8 to 10 clearance games he is renowned for
