Noble has been very clear about wanting to play two dedicated rucks. Has done it this year and CCJ is an upgrade on Campbell and Xerri who have been filling the role.

What goes around comes around. Norf's begging bowl is currently overflowing with Richmond money, like it was four years ago when the friendless deros drove up Dusty's price.

In a few years we will have plenty to spend just as the likes of Simpkin, LDU, Larkey, Thomas and co reach free agency.

That's assuming Tassie hasn't got its own team by then and these leeches haven't been wiped from the face of the Earth. 50-50.

Having thought about it a bit more, I'm very curious as to why CCJ's manager thinks 5 years at $450k is a good deal at his age.

He's 22 now, so will be 27 at the end of a new 5 year deal, he would probably only get one big contract for his entire career by doing it this way should he be a starting AFL ruckman by the end of that term.
If he was to back himself and take a 2-3 year deal now, then his next deal when he's 24-25 years old would likely be substantially more than the $450k-ish he'd be on under this proposed contract. The only reason the longer term deal makes sense now is if they don't think he will substantially improve at AFL level over the next 2-3 years.

Just look at players like Dusty and Pettraca, they backed themselves to hit their prime and only then signed the long term deal

Exactly why Bolton went with the two year. Smart.. but only if you have the confidence to believe the next two years will see you improve a lot. I am still not sure CCJ can. Maybe he thinks so too. But also sitting behind in the pecking order doesn't help his situation with us. Happy if we can get another high 2nd rounder.

Even if we have to throw in a late 3rd rounder we won't use to make it happen

There are alarm bells with CCJ. If he’s a model off-field citizen with great training habits and we see him as potentially becoming a top-liner, why are we only offering 2-years?

So if we lose Chol and stick to 2-years with CCJ there’s a reason the inner sanctum are aware of that we aren’t. Either he’s an off-field risk or we simply don’t believe he’s got much improvement left in him. So if we don’t increase the offer from 2-years I’m trusting there’s a very good reason why we are not desperate to keep him. At the very least it makes me think we have really high hopes for Samson Ryan as a ruck/fwd.
