Mod Notice

The level of vitriol and frankly toxic culture in this thread is getting out of hand. As such, the thread will be monitored actively for posters who drag down the quality of posting for all others, and they will have their access to the thread removed.

Further, reference to TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) and its counterpart 'Trumpanzee' or anything similar will no longer be allowed. Much like other tropes of that nature, they serves as a conversational barrier and fall-back point for people to simply sling mud. That's unacceptable.

Thanks.

Here are the numbers - Clinton 48% Trump 46%.

Now if Trump can only muster 41% as the poll predicts he ain’t getting anywhere near back in the White House.

He won very simply by carrying three states by less than 90,000 votes out of a total of approx 13.23m votes. He won Michigan by approx 11,000, Wisconsin by approx 23,000 and Pennsylvania by 54,000

Here is the current electoral map - rather be in Biden’s shoes than Trumps -

The last time there was a 9 point lead in the presidential election it was a shellacking -

Interesting. 6 months to go so lots can change but Donnie is up against it by the looks.

What happened the last time there was a 14 point lead. 12 days before voting no less.

I have little interest in polls as a rule as multiple elections around the world in recent years have bucked their suggested trend.

However it’s also folly to pretend that the 2016 dynamic will just alchemise into 2020 for no other reason than ‘just because’. We didn’t have COVID in 2016.

Now, these sorts of emergencies can be an absolute boon for a sitting government and leader if the disease is largely controlled. Look no further than Australia and New Zealand; Ardern was supposedly in trouble and Morrison was very much on the nose post-fires. Not so much now.

However they can also be an absolute disaster for those same leaders and governments if the situation gets out of control. Only the most delusional would suggest the US isn’t in a very bad way right now vis-a-vis COVID. Trump’s sabre rattling about China will have won him some support as will his encouraging of the protestors; however other stuff will have very much pushed some people away. States like Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida won him the presidency in 2016, and they’re all pretty badly hit by the virus. Not to the extent of NY obviously, but still fairly badly. We also have no idea what the reopening that has been rushed through will do - if it’s going to lead to a massive second wave (Has the first wave even ended? Not really), how long will that go for and how does that affect Trump’s standing?

Do I think that Trump loses in November? No idea. I probably still lean slightly to no, because a lot of the normal indicators seem to have been cast aside with Trump. However a few months ago I thought it was a foregone conclusion that he’d win. I no longer think it’s certain. If all bets aren’t already off, then they will be if the US COVID situation continues to be a disaster or gets even worse in the coming weeks and months.

And what were other polls showing?

If you are so confident, put your money where your mouth is.

Were they all showing 9% in 1996?

I have no idea if any of them will win election, but populist hucksters like Trump, Bolsonaro and Johnson have shown themselves woefully inadequate dealing with an actual crisis.

Bullshit boosterism doesn’t work as an anti viral.

I think Biden stands a fair chance of Jimmy Cartering his way into office, his election might be a more a vote against his opponent than a vote for him. What he then makes of it is up to him.

I'd almost like to see the inauguration.

Repeat after me.

I solemnly swear.
I sol...I... sol...you know...the thing

If Trump got in it would be

I solemnly swear
I’m the greatest, the best ever, the biggest....

Did he do that in 2017.

As you seem to have forgotten... Comey dropped his bombshell a few days before the election, pushing a swathe of neutrals in to the anti-Clinton camp, and that was enough to get Trump his wafer-thin majority in a few swing states. Clinton won the popular vote quite clearly. The polls were actually about right, but were cruelled by subsequent events.

The virus crisis is nothing more than an annoyance to Trump.

I dumped Kosch and that ChappyUK moron.

Cranky is getting close and FK seems to have run away with his tail between his legs.

Not surprising the running to the ignore button given the Flynn revelations.

Well here's the news - the best is yet to come.
Gonna be more, more more by June/July.

Good luck to you.

Like what? Obviously you're far more knowledgeable about this than anyone else so share what you know. You wouldn't want people to think that you're a blow hard.

No wonder Trump hates testing - you can't test positive if you don't get tested.

Nek minnit - Pence's press secretary (and Stephen Miller's wife) tests positive

FMD. Apparently tests aren’t great because if you test negative, it’s not a lifetime diagnosis.

“And for some reason, she tested positive.”

Probably because she caught the virus, you moron.
