Would certainly be a point of difference but I don't think Blight has enough tricks to make it as a wingman. Reading of the play, groundballs, foot skills etc. Think he's far more suited to an intercept marking 3rd tall.

I do often wonder why clubs don't try the Richo 2008 style wingman more regularly. But in saying that Richo was an aerobic freak and still got forward enough to kick 48 goals that season. Can modern wingman be afforded that type of freedom? Would be good to see.
Balta would make a very good Richo 2008 style wingman.

The issue Blight has is he is an average kick, you can get by with this however that relies on making decisions with ball in hand that suits your skill set. Unfortunately from the little I have seen of Jacob he tries to make kicks that he doesn't possess the capability of making on a regular basis.

It is the sort of thing a player can improve over a handful of seasons. It suits us perfectly if he ***** up a bit turning it over short term, but corrects the issue in the medium term.

Nick Cox for Essadon & Blicavs for Geebung both 200cm. Cox year 1 was great on the wing.

Seen no training not sure what the plan is but Bauer can play both ends well. High high high half fwd.

But we have elite space occupier, Kameron McIntosh for another year or 5 at least. Never injured, hope he's teaching the kids how to stay uninjured.

Grimes, Broad and Astbury were all average kicks when they started but knew their kicking ability so were safe kicks only. Got a bit more adventurous as they became more confident. No reason why Blight won't go much the same route. Kicking improves with confidence, look at Ross, very conservative until he found his feet and now pretty creative. Rance probably a better example as he was a back.

Not to mention Blights kicking suffered even further due to him being absolutely farked 5 minutes into the game. Poor bloke wasnt fit enough.

Elite intercept mark, good size, not fast, and needs fitness, kicking OK if only does safe stuff. Some things are trainable, speed and endurance. Some can improve, kicking. But being well above average in a key thing, intercepting, is a great start.

I reckon Blight starts somewhere toward the bottom of he KD stocks. If Gibcus comes back and plays that intercept role then Jacob is stuffed.

Unless of course Miller stays with second half 2024 form and not first half 2024 form. If Funky can get that better form as usual then he will become our mainstay partnering Balta (as long as he isn't in jail ;)). I reckon Ben will get better and Blight will be searching for that intercepting spot. It'll be interesting.

This bloke came in half way through the season from a completely different comp, having to learn a new game style in the worst performing team by a mile. Judging him at the end of the 25 season seems pretty reasonable to me. Sounds like he’s worked hard in the off season which is great and plenty of spots are up for grabs

Which makes his win of the time trial all the more impressive?

He's such an interesting player. If he can step up physically - which looks likely, and get the speed of play Blight could be a good player. Only problem is that in this one area we have a lot of players who have very good AFL potential.

I'm actually excited to watch Blight this season. As has been mentioned earlier, he has had to come from a long way back during the mid season last year. A guy that has certainly some skills that are hard to teach, but also other areas that he needs to work on. The thing is he has come back to training & obviously put in the hard yards in the off season to come back fit & firing & ready to earn his spot on the list. I really hope he rises to the occasion & proves a few doubters wrong, but only time will tell. He is also the perfect age for our list rebuild, so fingers crossed.

Who knows how it shakes out with our surplus of tall defenders. Hopefully they all show something good and at some point we can convert at least one of them into a good draft pick or maybe a useful player swap. And we are left with 3 or 4 very tidy tall defenders in our best 22. It would be good if Blight looks a competent AFL player by end of season, that will really add to our options.

I can't help thinking we have a good eye to trading with the Taz team when they are the ones holding all the key draft picks.

We will have Tasmanians Banks, Campbell & Mansell who could be right in their wheelhouse, + the very real prospect of a surplus key position player or two that they will be desperate to obtain. It would be good to get a high draft pick from them, perhaps for 2-3 of these players packaged, at a time where most other clubs will not have access to the top end of the draft.

2025 2 x top 5 picks
2026 1 x top 5 pick
2027 2 x top 10 picks

That would make a nice portfolio to round out our rebuild. You could see a player like Blight playing a role in helping the club achieve that, whether by being trded himself or by becoming good enough that we can afford to let another decent key defender go.

Potentially perfect timing for the Tassie team to come in with us having a group of 4 or 5 proven KPDs. We need to lose one or 2 they need 1 or 2.

And they all have shown good AFL traits. Only area of the ground we have really smashed it in recent draft and development. hopefully that performance spreads.

Yes Kosi & Miller will become great Tassie leaders
