Player Watch #47: Ivan Soldo

The last two years we’ve seen massive runs of goals straight out of the middle. We bought in TT and Hopper, added Dusty and Shai back in but still get torched.

We’ve spent a fortune on midfielders both $ and picks but haven’t addressed the person tapping the ball down to them.

Can't do much about the time he's been out injured, but when he's in the form he has been since returning, he just has to be played in the #1 slot.

Honestly, the best kind of leader would make things easy and have a chat to the coach in the off-season if it's obvious Soldo's the better option, admit it and move on to thinking about how else you can best contribute in a secondary or different role.

Club first.

Nank seems that kind of bloke, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Rewatching the Dogs game Soldo comes in at goal 5 in 1st Qtr. 3 ball up, reball ups vs Lobb before Bont gets the clearance.

You look at that Bont clearance as a loss, perhaps, and at face value it is but in game plan and ruck strategy terms, it's actually still a win - a repeat stoppage in the centre square gives us a chance to break the 6/6/6 if we so desire and set up the way we wanted for when that Bont clearance did come in.

We took numerous marks inside our D50 from those exact kind of situations and that may well have been one of them from memory.

Soldo on, bleeding stopped, no more two goals in a minute hemorrhaging out of the centre square.

I don't really like our captain set up. I thought Grimes might step away . But elite footballers have a competitive streak. Nank has it.
We have good ruck options no doubt. Nank resigns as captain, first ruck? May as well retire.
Soldo took a good mark in the fwd line. We need goal kickers. He provides that.
See what happens.. I haven't noticed new coaches at other clubs making much list changes .

Nank is 29 & Soldo is 27 both won't be part of the next tilt, well Nank definitely won't.

Ryan has the potential to be an elite ruck he body wise reminds me of Tim English.
who was very skinny but the dogs got games into him & has become one of the premier rucks.
Both seem a good set shot as well.

I don't see a need for Nank to step down as captain if the group want him above others. His forward work was perfectly acceptable this week, he'd be a nightmare match-up for the fill-in rucks, just keep playing him until a Ryan or someone similar steps up.

Ryan's not going to be ready to do a serious season long stint as a #1 ruck for somewhere in the 2-4 seasons range, he'll be a #2 or brief fill-in until then.

Soldo is a real handful as a forward, he could have kicked 5-6 on the weekend if that goal square free he won had been kicked by him and they'd managed to get it to him when he'd run hard forward and was in a ton of space inside 50.

He's nowhere near as immobile as his detractors make out, once fully fit and right he's a bloody good athlete for his size.

Goodbye Sweet Prince :'(

Nothing but love, go well!

P.S I will not be changing my avatar - gone but not forgotten.

Going forward, he was the better option than nank (nank best is behind him and only going to get more injured). Was silly making nank captain as that sealed soldo fate as he never got a look in as no 1 ruck based on performance.

how Power got Soldo for exactly what they wanted within 24 hours of request & we are still piss-farting around with Kosi is beyond me
Maybe Port are better to deal with then Hawthorn.

Yeah, but better for whom?

One thing is for sure, Richmond definitely are better/easier to deal with. That deal was done very quickly. Its a bit cuck we said a week agp " u dont have the assets!" Then literally accepted the assets a week later. Its a pretty weak stance IMO.

All this deal has done is improved Hawhorns draft hand as instead of being forced to accept our 3rd, which was fair - we are most likelt
going to give one of these picks for Kosi. guarantee it.

While I think Soldo will be a good get for Port, giving up him and 50 and getting 41 and 49, Freo's 2nd rounder next year and a token 4th rounder next year from port is amazing trading by us.

Port has been very reasonable and very fair. If there is an occasion in the future we trade with them again, I hope we bear this in mind. They are clearly a good club to negotiate with.

In the end it was a deal too good to refuse for an expendable fringe player. It's a win-win. Ivan will be very handy for Port with JHF, Butters, Wines and Rozee at his feet. Rapt we got Freos f2 and not Ports.

Soldo would have just hampered Samsons development next year and then would have likely left for half the value of what we've got for him this year.
