Roast 5 Negatives from 2009

Even though those stats showed 08 he had more tackles...i think his mentality and body language this season was a lot better as well. He did a lot more hard running and showed that he didnt have to kick goals to be effective. Set up quite a lot more than he has in the past.

My Five...

1) Waites Injury clearly heads this list. Such a big loss.

2) The fact that Ratts was Outcoached on a lot of occasions.

3) The Form of Stevens and Scottland. Serious questions need to be asked of them.

4) Errant Goal Kicking. Cant think as to what might have been had this Stat been better.

5) Not being able to beat Essendon when we have a much better team.

One last one i will add on is the dissapointing backline we had this year and Injury to key players was partly to blame i know but we seriously lack depth there and it needs to be addressed in this off season.

Jamison's injuries, Stevens being unfit, Bad coaching early, not playing the 3 aboriginal small forwards at once, Warnock's injuries, Walker's injuries, Fev's/Simpson's bad kicking early on, losing games we should have won...

Sorry, it was a typo. MORE tackles in 09.

47 in the H&A games. Only further validates your point.

1. Losing to Essendon.

2. Losing to Essendon again.

3. The pain of elimination in a game we should have won. Bitter sweet negative really.

4. Inability to close out and win the winnable games (Hawks, Freo, Dons).

5. Players constantly holding the ball in the air with 5 minutes to go. Id seriously rather lose attacking than see that shit every second game. Its become part of our game and I HATE it soo much.

Or we should have picked Watts ahead of these two players to get the wrong tall.

Melbourne.

Good luck with Tom Scully and Jack Trengove...

Carlton will add a better talent in Yarran to the team that made the finals. :)
Touch a nerve? No need to turn the thread into a pissing match, its a legitimate negative (even if not entirely accurate).

Here's a fresh couple of negatives from the same man:

1. Judd's 'pressure' push/grope/gouge has sullied his reputation.

2. Judd's inability to say 'nothing' at the airport about the incident. By saying nothing he would not have been cited. By opening his mouth the match review panel had to look at the incident plus they had to take into account his stupid comments.

3. Judd's absence at the start of 2010 could cost us a couple of early games - which we don't need!

As an outsider my major low point was Chris Judds suggestion that he was trying to use pressure point tactics on another player during the game the other night, when really he was trying to exert himself on the other player in a most unsportsman like manner.

And yes I have also read Camus. But also Satre too..

Ok, Chuck Norris, we get it. You're a registered lethal weapon - ease up.

Few people being a bit harsg on Grigg here. He didnt go backwards, he was just injured all year.

For a 3rd year player to have continual injuries and then expect him to come in and perform at a higher level than this year is a bit unrealistic. Confidence is the most important part of any footballer and it was obvious he lost any confidence in his body/ability through the lack of continual games. His form in the preseason was top3 at the club and then got the hammie and a bad ankle.

Honestly I don't mind the idea of it - it's certainly more frustrating to see the opposition kick late goals on us (which they have a bit), and I'd happily watch us hold it up and see neither team kick any.

Our problem is that we do it too early (5 mins instead of 2), and that we turn it over after 30 seconds anyway.

If we're going to do it with 5 minutes to go, hold it up for a minute or so to slow down play but then attack again - don't spend the whole 5 minutes trying to play keepings off. Secondly - don't do a little 20m pass to a contest!

1. russell - get rid of him
2. russell - get rib of him
3. russell - get rid of him
4. russell - get rid of him
5. russell - get rid of him
JR came on strong this year (and needed to)
Earnt his place in the side with good efforts
Solid skills work over summer and joing Garlett living in the gym will make or break him in 2010

1. Injuries to key defenders left us a little light at the back
2. Not enough knowledge on how to close out and win the close games.
3. Inexperienced coach losing the plot at times
4. Skill errors from players who should know better
5. Steven's and Scotland's lack of endevour in the first half of the season

Looking at the list, there could be a couple more things added to it, but those are the 5 big negatives from 2009 for me.

We get out key defenders back for next year and things should get better back there and hopefully we will manage to recruit a KPP defender for depth in the future.

This season was pretty much about development and putting the finishing touches on a couple of players who will be the ones leading us forward. I expect next year that the close matches will be won and we arent going to get hammered either.

Once again, this season was a learning process for Ratts and next year, after 2 years as senior coach, he will know the side a lot better and will be able to make the changes required when they are required.

A good preseason with the development staff and a good buildup to next season should see a definite improvement in the skills. Some of the guys who are getting rated as downhill skiers will put more defensive pressure on the opposition and some guys who have been making a lot of skill errors will have that extra bit of experience behind them and they wont be making them anymore.

I think that next year both Steven's and Scotland will slowly be playing lesser roles in the starting 22 as some of our kids who are supposed to replace them start coming through. Twitch coming in as our inside mid putting the hard pressure on the opposition will slowly displace Steven's and Army on the HBF will replace Scotland back there.

Another preseason into both the coaching staff and the boys and I think that we might be struggling to find 5 negatives next year (apart from the anti-Ratten/Hughes trolls)

1. Losing games against Hawthorn, Essendon & Fremantle that we really should have won.

2. Injuries to Waite & Jamison. Robbed us of our 2 rocks in defence, and really hit us hard vs Brisbane on Saturday night.

3. Richard Pratt passing away. Not a snowflakes chance in hell we'd be where we are without this great man.

4. Cloke, Garlett & Betts turning up late for their recovery session after the Melbourne game. Really disappointing stuff.

5. Losing our first final after controlling the game for most of the night.
