Big difference being drafted into a poor team as a high draftee than getting brought in as a mid-range pick in a team that consistently makes finals and is stacked to the gills with quality midfielders. Value doesn't equate to draft selection or number of Brownlow votes talled (over 100 game career).

I'd argue Lipinski would be worth a similar pick, and tbh I'd probably take him over SPS at this point in time. On a game-by-game basis his consistency and overall impact are greater than SPS'.

Be that as it may - I’d like us (for once) to play hard ball. :thumbsu:

Glad you’re not in charge of this one.;):p

We got 19 for Chris Yarran, did his problems arise afterwards or?
Yarran showed a shit load more than samo. I'll be very sad to see him go, but samos played close to 100 games and you can count the good ones on one hand.

I was also very disappointed when we gave up both menzel and Yarran plus others, but seems those inside the club knew better each time. If people coming into the club that are big on attitude (cook, voss, etc), have said samo is the first to go (as forty3 said and he's one of the itk I rate) maybe there's more to it than he didn't like playing back line. If it's true he hasn't been offered a contract, he's effectively worthless in a trade.

More excuses for Austin.

If there's anyone at the club that ought to have their papers stamped it's this imposter.
Interested to hear any stories from the Dogs' football department if you have them!

If Austin bends for 52 I'm happy for Sayers to interject on this one and do the deal.

Does sound like perhaps SPS has gone off the rails somewhat... could be a welfare issue if we're even remotely considering 52
This isn't the Premier League circa 15 years ago, we have mediation processes for these situations.

What does 52 do for us? It may get Lewis Young but it definitely gets you a reputation a recruitment team doesn’t want.

Bingo. Assuming SPS' hamstrings are in decent nick and he can get lean and fit in a healthy environment, if West Coast are being this belligerent, force their hand.

Make a big pitch about a clean slate, accept some level of responsibility for their culture and keep working with him right up until he ejects himself into the PSD, then maybe pick him up anyway.

If we tick off a decision like this, so divorced from the current market for players, we need to clean out the football department even more.

If as reported Bulldogs get around pick 30 for Lipinkski and Geelong get around pick 40 for a Krueger then there are two players (Krueger and Lipinski) with less games and Brownlow Medal votes combined than SPS getting traded and their clubs getting far better deals than what’s currently being reported for SPS.

We should hold firm for pick 29 from WCE for SPS.
Geelong aren't getting pick 40 only. There's more to the deal than that. Think its like a 10 pick upgrade give or take. Value of Krueger not much when you think of it

WC want him, list spaces are precious commodities, if the want factor wasn’t there they wouldn’t be entertaining him in any scenario. They just want him on the dirt cheap

I suppose the flipside to that is that it may show other clubs that they can offer massive unders for our players and potentially get them for free in the PSD, especially given how rare it is for another club to jump in and take someone who has made their preferred destination known.

Ie. Dow decides he wants to go to Richmond at the end of next year, Richmond offer Pick 70 on the basis that we have just shown we're open to sending players to the PSD, nobody else jumps on Dow given his manager won't even take their calls, Richmond get Dow and we get nothing.

I think WC are just playing hardball on the SPS trade. Hopefully we can negotiate up to one of their second rounders.

Lipinski can't get a game in a midfield in front of Bont/Macrae/Dunkley/Libba/Smith etc and hasn't fallen off the proverbial cliff performance wise in the past 2 seasons. The idea that he and SPS have similar trade value is using serious Blue tinted glasses...

52 (if true) is disappointing but the idea that the Eagles will give us 29 is fanciful IMO. When you poorly develop a player, play him out of position, make it very clear to other clubs that he is out of favour to the point where said player wants to leave you don't exactly have the upper hand in negotiations

Just cut our losses and move on. I reckon he won't even be an AFL listed player in 2/3 years time. Pea hearted and as soft as they come. Never impressed me.

I agree - we could be proven wrong but I don't have any great fear that SPS is going to turn into some gun mid-fielder at West Coast. Another Kane Lucas - sad but I think we just cut our losses.

Not the first club to botch a top 10 pick - won't be the last.

He had a good under 17's reel and an OK under 18's reel. 2-3 good games for the blues - in the wet against collingwood and against the dogs.

Unfortunately I think it's just become too obvious that he shirks the contest - no nice way of saying it.

This. The gap between his best game and his baseline standard is Grand Canyon like. Been saying it here for several seasons now, and getting slammed for it, but he's a bang average AFL player. He's not in our best 22. I'd be willing to bet he won't be on an AFL list in two seasons time.

Too many similar types, poor list management, small framed , lightweight players whom may be conditional players because of their physiques.
SPS, Fisher, Dow,& LOB and there’s more all these players have been in the system at least 4 seasons , yet haven’t developed physically to be able to protect themselves & demands of AFL .

This. For me, SPS and Fisher should be traded ASAP. Nup, screw it, trade them all.

Imagine how funny it would be for opposition to see Carlton put all of

SPS| Fisher | Dow | Setterfield | Ramsay | Philp | Gibbons and the skinny tall bloke who lasted two quarters in he debut game in VFL as the ruck as our midfield

I mean seriously ....

get real Carlton

you need to be bale to have the bodies and mongrel and run - that are happy to go head to head with AFL hard nuts - just to play the game.

oh Cripps and Walsh you say?

yeah two blokes trying to make up for 8 rotating mids...we've seen how well that goes.

it is wake up time at Carlton for all the little blokes who collectively and individually have never played 4 quarters of AFL level.

Voss will have done well to get Carlton to play finals in his first year - but the fact is we dont have the miodfield depth to match it with the better sides - and by depth I mean enough blokes with the size to actually play the role.

lets all enjoy Fisher and Gibbo making thier stoopid videos though and reflect on the nice end to Murphy's career on 300 games! wowee.

we are in rebuild lets hope for a fast 1-2 year reset.

FWIW, I absolutely think Vossy will love Philp.

Yeah there were some videos from his first pre-season, maybe against Collingwood, where he was laying some big tackles in the forward line. Lightning fast too which always helps.

It sounds like it will be a very simple swap of SPS for 52. Then that will be on traded for Lewis Young, although we are trying to get him for 64.
Very disappointing, but this is not Austin's fault.
Both the club and SPS have let themselves down over the last 2-3 years. His value is at an all time low and he was the first to have his papers stamped by the incoming bosses. He was is not viewed in a positive light with those pushing the new culture shift. I guess this says a bit.
Hopefully for him he gets his attitude right. Will be hard to watch him blossom at another club, but it would be a huge shame to see his talent completely go to waste.

I don't buy this. Kid was played out of position. Maybe he didn't cope well with covid. Going by review, things were not run well both on and off the field. Not the only young player to be inconsistent, not achieve expectations and be upset by the sounds of things. Rumour was that both our skippers were also not happy with things. Was it attitude? Don't think it's fair to judge any player's attitude in this environment.

Gee pick 52, not great if true. Hopefully the overall trade maneuvering compliments our strategy even though it may appear we get unders for some trades.

Irrespective, appreciate your updates.

Tell me how we benefit by sending SPS to the draft?

Not everything is a player welfare/ mental health issue. Even SOS says his preparation is less than professional. Seems more like a shit attitude issue than a player welfare issue from the outside looking in.
