We only have ourselves to blame for his value. Sending him to the PSD just delays the process and we go without a pick.

Ask for 29, get offered 52 and end up somewhere in the middle. That’s how it always goes. Austin has some good history in that range.

I don't read too much into the B&F results. Each club has different points systems and value different things.
Personally I read more into b&f results than into stats. Suggests that the players are impacting and carrying out coaches orders.

Stats indicate Tom Mitchell is the best player in the comp. Give me a Martin/Peteacca type any day that impacts the game.

I suppose the flipside to that is that it may show other clubs that they can offer massive unders for our players and potentially get them for free in the PSD, especially given how rare it is for another club to jump in and take someone who has made their preferred destination known.

Ie. Dow decides he wants to go to Richmond at the end of next year, Richmond offer Pick 70 on the basis that we have just shown we're open to sending players to the PSD, nobody else jumps on Dow given his manager won't even take their calls, Richmond get Dow and we get nothing.

I think WC are just playing hardball on the SPS trade. Hopefully we can negotiate up to one of their second rounders.

Or if the rumour is true, trade him now.

Interested to hear any stories from the Dogs' football department if you have them!

This isn't the Premier League circa 15 years ago, we have mediation processes for these situations.

Bingo. Assuming SPS' hamstrings are in decent nick and he can get lean and fit in a healthy environment, if West Coast are being this belligerent, force their hand.

Make a big pitch about a clean slate, accept some level of responsibility for their culture and keep working with him right up until he ejects himself into the PSD, then maybe pick him up anyway.

If we tick off a decision like this, so divorced from the current market for players, we need to clean out the football department even more.
As I say to many people, couldn’t give a flying eff what he does at WC because sure as hell he was never going to fire for us, which sadly sees his trade value in the pits.

Will never forgive his insipid “efforts” when tackling or applying pressure in many of our games, especially so at crunch times - he showed little respect for the jumper or himself.

Just as long as his ultimate pick gives us a player who will play better for us than what he would ever have done at his original club I’m Joe Cool with it - let’s hope Young fits that category. Swings and roundabouts people.

Darcy Lang at pick 56 I thought was a steal too, just to give you some perspective in all of this. 2 games before we get him he got 24 touches in a Cats finals win and I was there!

Lang had foot/leg issues.

That's all well and good in general terms, but we're (or I'm) talking specifically about the gap in perceived value between the two players.
I'm not denying that Cerra is a better player, nor that SPS hasn't lost some trade value. I'm merely arguing that the gap shouldn't be that large.
We know the player SPS was tracking to be back in 2019 before we ruined him. We also know the player he could be, and it's definitely better than what he is right now, and arguably better than what he was back in 2019.

What would his value have been if he asked for trade at the end of 2019? Similar to Cerra now? Would we have wanted to at least "break even" with pick 6?
What's his actual value right now on output, missing games, requesting a trade and being out of contract? Maybe 50ish is accurate based on that.
So his real value is somewhere between that. If WC got him for something around 27-38, they'd still be getting a bargain if gets back to his 2019 form. Which there's no reason he can't.

Wanting rid of SPS has nothing to do with McGovern. Nothing.
Takes a list spot on huge money and would start to affect how we value players on our list. Dow, O’Brien, Samo, fisher & more will be off our list come next season because of these failed recruitment strategies clogging up our salary cap. We’ll have no space in our salary if any one of these players pop next season. We’re in a position where our recruits have to guide us and not the underbelly of talent. That’s not how a premiership profile is made. Do you really believe that samo is that bad a player or are we convincing ourselves he is to justify what the football department and admin have done to the list? We have paid overs for players that don’t help for premiership aspirations. You want to buy yourself a premiership then get the best key defender to help weiters. Not a running half back and 4th string talls. Get an elite ruckman. Not another half back player. Get an elite midfielder. Not a potentially elite one. The only acquisition I’ve actually liked us getting is hewett and even that doesn’t move the needle. You’ve got to open your eyes on our list build. It’s bad.

Only my personal opinion but after 2019 I would have valed him at about 20 - 25.

Now I would value him at about 35 - 40.

Early on he showed promise but very rarely dominated games (only 2 I can remember is Collingwood in the wet and bulldogs). If you play all 22 games on ball and finish 10th in the best and fairest you are not shooting the lights out.

No doubt he was mucked around and that's hurt his rating but he hasn't done much to help himself either.

I'm like everyone and invest in players (particularly high draft picks). However you have to be prepared to let people go to regenerate the list if they are stagnating. SPS is stagnating.

Look at the bright side - the list is overrated. Our youngsters are overrated - but we nailed the most important part of the list and hardest to find and thats KPP. We have some of the best young KPP in the game and two jet mids. Its a start.

If the list stays healthy our VFL team should win the flag.

52 for SPS - tell 'em they're dreaming!

Play hard ball CFC!

Contracted vs non-contracted, but have a look at Gibbs and Dunkley - they just gone back to their team and play out the season

It sounds like it will be a very simple swap of SPS for 52. Then that will be on traded for Lewis Young, although we are trying to get him for 64.
Very disappointing, but this is not Austin's fault.
Both the club and SPS have let themselves down over the last 2-3 years. His value is at an all time low and he was the first to have his papers stamped by the incoming bosses. He was is not viewed in a positive light with those pushing the new culture shift. I guess this says a bit.
Hopefully for him he gets his attitude right. Will be hard to watch him blossom at another club, but it would be a huge shame to see his talent completely go to waste.
Sakc Austin

West Coast also sniffing around for Powell Pepper which will complicate things a little. SPS and SPP...lol
Two diverging approaches from the clubs.

1) WCE use SPP to feign disinterest in SPS and go with a take it or leave it approach. SPP will nett Port a 2nd rounder.
2) We stick to a 2nd round request, leaving SPS in limbo until the AFL intervenes with mediation.

The AFL won’t mediate. He’ll quite easily get to WC in the PSD and they know that. I don’t think we have a leg to stand on.
