Takes a list spot on huge money and would start to affect how we value players on our list. Dow, O’Brien, Samo, fisher & more will be off our list come next season because of these failed recruitment strategies clogging up our salary cap.

That's just not true at all. If they aren't on our list beyond next season it's far more likely to be because they want out or we deem them not good enough to keep around.

Samo won't be on our list next year. Every chance LOB is in the same basket. Fisher is contracted through to the end of 2023 and highly unlikely to renegotiate sooner on huge dollars. Dow OOC end of next season and whilst I'm confident he'll be a very good footballer, unless he has an amazing 2022 he's not going to be on huge money.

Their salary increases will likely be well and truly covered by the reducing salaries of those who we've recruited on heavily front-ended deals. And that's not even taking into consideration those who have left us this year and those who will follow them out the door next year.

So last year, as we had made the pledge to Saad, it was up to us to ensure the deal got done. Then this year it’s not up to WC to get the deal done, but rather we should just let him walk?
52 isn’t enough, so they improve their offer or let him walk to the draft. He could probably walk to WC, but we need to stand up a bit and not be bullied around again.

We’re in a position where our recruits have to guide us and not the underbelly of talent. That’s not how a premiership profile is made. Do you really believe that samo is that bad a player or are we convincing ourselves he is to justify what the football department and admin have done to the list? We have paid overs for players that don’t help for premiership aspirations. You want to buy yourself a premiership then get the best key defender to help weiters. Not a running half back and 4th string talls. Get an elite ruckman. Not another half back player. Get an elite midfielder. Not a potentially elite one. The only acquisition I’ve actually liked us getting is hewett and even that doesn’t move the needle. You’ve got to open your eyes on our list build. It’s bad.

Yes, I have suggested for several seasons now that I don't think SPS is anything more than a bang average AFL player, despite the love he gets here on BF. I think many will verify my thoughts on him for a long period.

I think the name's you mentioned will fall off our list because they aren't particularly good and rarely show anything other than a flash here and there of being good players. Not because of Mitch McGovern's contract. At this point in their development, they are all misses for mine.

May not be interested in trading for him, but for free, it would be a no brainer

I’d say Samo will get a 2 year deal from WC. If Freo are willing to match that and select him without a desire to move there then more power to them.

I can’t see it and I hope I’m wrong as it does give us some leverage.

I still can’t believe they are still being trotted out to suit arguments or that posters still believe certain others buy in.

Give me Samo every single day of the week. The two are in a completely different level of quality.

LOB is statistically better. I’m taking his 50 metre chisellers over SPS’ 20m hospital kicks too.

If SPS didn’t have his 2 massive games his first few years we wouldn’t collectively hold the same opinion.

Both awful.

West Coast also sniffing around for Powell Pepper which will complicate things a little. SPS and SPP...lol
Two diverging approaches from the clubs.

1) WCE use SPP to feign disinterest in SPS and go with a take it or leave it approach. SPP will nett Port a 2nd rounder.
2) We stick to a 2nd round request, leaving SPS in limbo until the AFL intervenes with mediation.
Has been reported that sps is their main target. If and when they can get that done they may look at spp. (Or any other sp available).

Sps is average at best … if he was pick 49 in the draft when we got him not one person on here would be asking for pick 35 .. plays 3 good games in the wet over 5 years … good luck on that fast dry deck in WA … take 52 or send him to psd and move on

I feel Carlton we’re not offering him a contract at all. I tend to agree with that stance. Can’t on exposed form defend. We have better midfield options despite having a crap midfield and we have better small forwards who will chase and tackle harder than him.

there is no spot for him with his current mindset and form. This means WCE can give us that token pick or pick him up for nothing.

For those that are a fan, yes he could turn it around but he does need to find a much higher bar in every facet of his footy.

I don’t see much difference between him and a 21 Murphy. Don’t want that version of him.

He lacks intensity for sure....but friggin pick 52....
That's a huge slap in the face for us and him....
Surely 35 is adequate for an ex top 10 draft pick who we have spent good money on....

I agree it sucks. Typical Carlton mismanagement Of a player allowing his value to plummet.

Gold Coast did this with us over Jack Martin. The difference is, they had to many picks that they couldn't use them all anyway, so nothing was lost.
Although its not a great return on a player that has ability the facts are he's out of contract, he's only wanted by one club, he won't stay with us and Freo aren't interested. West Coast have many ways of getting him without spending anything. It all well and good to make a statement when it doesn't effect what you are doing. But we need something for him to allow us to do other deals, so the trade will hold value, even if it doesn't look like much on first glance.

I personally feel the club has completely let this kid down. He would of had a higher draft value if he had played the last two seasons in the twos as a midfielder. But on exposed output, and the way the club has systematically destroyed his confidence, coupled with his own lack of professionalism means his value is at rock bottom.

It's a real shame, cause I really think there is a very good footballer in him.

Maybe we should acknowledge that SOS was very hit and miss when it comes to picking midfielders

Everyone gets to pick. Fault lies with SoS or fault lies with development. Carlton tend to rush a lot of players in early….in a weak team. Hasn’t really ended well except for a faultless Walsh.

SPS doesn’t seem to have the greatest attributes for the current midfield game but then I also feel most of our players are just not competitive enough which is on Teague setting the bar.

Dockers have a pick before WC, so he won't go in the PSD

Could we do a deal with Freo, say just #6 for Cerra and allow SPS to go into PSD for Freo to pick up before WC. Would that be a better outcome for us than: giving #6 + pick swaps to Freo and getting #52 for SPS?

SPS still gets to WA, but not at an undervalued pick of 52. Great midfield opportunity opening up there for him.

Would it be enough for WC to improve their offer from #52 to a pick in 30s? Probably depends on whether we think it’s a better outcome for us and if Freo are even interested in picking up SPS in the PSD (ahead of some other player). Feels better than getting just 52 for SPS notwithstanding his limitations and lack of club development.

Even sos admits that SPS lacked something
