2. Richmond - Jacob Blight
Peel Thunder WAFL
Key defender
196cm
14/12/01

Mature-age key defender who will be viewed as a potential plug-and-play option for clubs. Clubs have taken this path before in the mid-season intake in choosing mature-age tall defenders, including James Blanck at the Hawks and Kallan Dawson at North Melbourne. Blight crossed to Peel Thunder from Claremont before the start of the 2023 season. Has averaged nearly nine marks a game so has very sure hands and seen as a ready-to-play option, with a number of clubs looking at him in the lead-up.

Been playing in a system pretty close to Freo's at Peel for the past couple of years, deserves his chance for sure.

Best KPD in the WAFL.

Freo fans would have instantly picked him up as an injury replacement when Cox and Mcdonald went down in round 1 but unfortunately not an option.

Would be surprised if he isn't able to step up to AFL level, mobility was always the worry in previous years but his read of the play and intercepting has ended up trumping it, had to be given a shot.

One concern is his Mrs plays for WCE and netball over there so either recruit her to our AFLW program or he will be crying home sick in 6 months anyway. She’s worth it too.

Freo and Eagles asked us to grab him apparently to throw into the Ox Baker deal. They both want Blight.

Blight is pretty much ready to go, so we should find out pretty quickly whether he has the potential to be an AFL player. Only nominated for a short-term contract, which I like with these speculative mid-season picks.

How long is his contract?
