To be fair Miller Bergman did some training with Bailey and walked away pleased with his own strength and power numbers.

Point taken on JHF though. Specimen.

Reminds me of a young Daniel Rich in body shape.

He's taller and rangier though. They're both blondey ranga types who came into the league physically very developed but imo Jason is going to end up playing a hell of a lot taller than Rich ever has.

The turning down of deals had begun at pick No.1 weeks ago, when North Melbourne rebuffed interest from Adelaide and Richmond in its first-ever top choice. The Crows had offered pick No.4 and two first-rounders next year in exchange for pick one and a future second-round pick, with the Kangaroos not considering a move (a revised version, with likely a future third coming back instead, was also declined). Richmond also threw its hat in the ring, packaging picks No.7, 15, 26 and Callum Coleman-Jones for No.1, but the Roos didn't budge.

They had their eyes set on Jason Horne-Francis from a long time out and, judging by his determination to ditch his club polo and wear the blue and white-striped guernsey after he had his name called (and then sleep in the No.6 jumper), Horne-Francis had his sights just as firmly set on Arden Street.

Not aimed at you GR but one of my pet hates is how 'first rounders' are described as thought they are all of equal value.

Especially when there's literally a system that assigns each one a points value in diminishing order.

I am looking forward to watching him develop without the expectation that he's going to be ripping games apart.

he looks a highly talented kids, but he's still just a kid.

inflating your own expectations is fine so long as you know that if he doesn't hit the markers you have in your head it is more your fault than his. at least in the first couple of seasons.

Here here. Less of this shrinking violet stuff and more of this bloke.

No point being clucky supportive mother hens in December if come June this joint is full of wolves baying to tear him apart.

I mean you only have to look as far as previous first pick.

And as for onboard, I am incredibly excited. We have a midfield that is developing into an exciting and dynamic thing, without him. Which means he hopefully gets the chance to not have weight of expectation of being an absolute key to everything.

i think he'll be barely noticed this year as three other young midfielders step up and make the league go "Oh shit, here comes Norfffffffff..... **** they're good!"

I wouldn't be lumping any expectation on him, still has a way to go with his tank to be truly ready for AFL. He isn't Sam Walsh (or Nick Daicos), who predominantly played outside and have a big tank to rake up disposals.

He'll play plenty of games across half forward and maybe the odd run through the midfield, but I won't expect him to be winning games off his own boot in his first season.

Half forward is the hardest position on the ground, particularly so for a developing side. I think he will have games where he kicks a couple and has 20 possessions, but then he will also have games where he finds the footy less than 10 times.

Either way I'm excited to see what the kid can do.

I know he’s played two years of senior footy - is a pretty hard player and all but he’ll be targeted next year.
Need the bulls in the side to protect him a bit.
I get what your saying SM, but my gut feel is this kid will just embrace it. He has stated all along, he wanted to be picked number 1 and didn't shy away from advertising that to the footy world. People may call it arrogance (and you know what, there definitely is some there) but I also see it as he is backing his ability, which he has in abundance.

There is no doubt that a majority of young players if targeted earlier on in their career, would probably go into their shell a bit, until they get a bit more experience in the game at the highest level. But for some reason I just see JHF embracing this challenge and making the opposition pay. I might be wrong, but my gut instinct is telling me that he wont shirk any attention he gets.

I have absolutely zero concerns about his ability to look after himself in this regard.

This is why his elite defensive side is so important.

He can still impact without getting the ball lots.

I got my head torn off earlier by saying we should play him as a pressure forward in his first year, but I stand by it.

Get the tank up, make the most of his elite tackling and defensive ability and speed, use his elite forward nous.

I think regardless of where he plays he will bring that competitiveness and pressure. It's in his DNA to go 100% all the time at the ball or the ball carrier.

I’d be happy with that. Play him predominantly there.

Some stints across half forward.

Some periodic runs in the middle.

Let him grow learn and build.

That's it. Plenty of time.
