Roos optimistic on Hansen

By Jason Phelan

Sat 30 Apr, 2011

NORTH Melbourne forward Lachie Hansen was stretchered from the ground late in the Kangaroos' 60-point win over Port Adelaide, but coach Brad Scott is confident he hasn't suffered a serious spinal injury.

Hansen, 22, clattered head first into the boundary fence at the Lockett End of Etihad Stadium after kicking his second goal in the 13th minute of the last quarter and immediately clutched at his lower back in obvious pain.

Speaking to the media after the match, Scott said Hansen had been sent to hospital for precautionary scans, which was standard procedure for such an injury.

"He's got full feeling in his toes and his fingers so we're confident there isn't any nerve damage," Scott said.

"But whenever there's that risk of spinal injury … he can't move too much because he's strapped into a stretcher and he couldn't move if he wanted to.

"All I know is that he's got a sore lower back and whenever there's any risk of spinal injuries they just immobilise the player and send them off to hospital as a precaution.

"He could wake up tomorrow and be fine or there could be something more serious, but we really don't have much information at the moment."

Jack Ziebell was substituted off after experiencing calf soreness during the third quarter, but Scott said the move was precautionary and he's confident the player will be available next week.

Fair chance he cracked/fractured/broke a vertebrate, I have seen similar incidents before that have had that outcome, and possibly what the crack he heard was.

Hoping it's just some soreness, please don't let it be serious.

Andy Maher just mentioned no fracture, he's been discharged from hospital and will spend the night at home.

8:37 PM Sat 30 Apr, 2011

North Melbourne forward Lachlan Hansen has been discharged from hospital after colliding with signage behind the goals at the game at Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Hansen hyper extended his lower back, but scans revealed no serious damage.

Hansen will be monitored through the week.

kangaroos.com.au will provide a further update on Hansen's condition on Sunday. kangaroos.com.au

Glad to hear it aint serious.

Copped a similar injury in my playing days, and thought i'd broken my back, but played the next week, so fingers crossed Lachie will do the same;)

Doc Larkins said an MRI was being done today which is standard procedure and he is still a little sore in the lower back, but he has been cleared of any serious damage.

Said it would be no surprise to see him miss a week or two, but will make a full recovery.
