Past #6: Taylor Garner - delisted end '21 - 49 NM games/37 NM goals - go well Garns

Exactly. An off night and hardly on his own. Still developing.

The mark he 'should have taken' was a poor kick that he did well to get back to I thought. Some of his fumbles seemed to be in the middle of the ground; I thought it was interesting to see him there tbh.

Some negative comments on him symptomatic of BF reactiveness. 'Star in the making' one week, 'doesn't do enough' the next.

Averaging 15 disposals 5 marks, 3 tackles and a goal a game. In by book he is in our best 12 players...... not saying that isn't tragic.

I'm not into rating who's best etc. but I think overall he's done more than enough this year to show that his persistence and our patience will be more than rewarded if he continues to stay on the park. His form this year, and his highlights, show he's a significant part of our future (and a pin-up boy for certain posters.) Just a shame the AFL hasn't done a 'Menzel-like' video on his trials and tribulations.

He dropped 2 marks he should have taken (by his usual standards) in the first quarter.

Plenty of other players who deserve criticism in front of him tho.

I worry when 'events' become 'patterns'. Until then, I bemoan a poor performance, not a poor performer.

An emerging pattern, which is on my watchlist, would seem to be Wood's inability to perform over four quarters. Mind you, he's not alone in our team in that regard.

Yeah fair enough. It was a shit night for a lot of players.

Woods ability to play 4 quarters is a bit of a worry but he needs real fitness imo. I was looooking forward to seeing him this year but so far I'm not sure he's all he is cracked up to be. Then again he still does enough to stand out so maybe he came back too early and still doesn't have match fitness.

Guys like Garner, Simpkin and Wood need games pumped into them, they are too raw at this stage to making calls on ability or career outcomes.

Who is doing that?

The midfield made life near on impossible for the forwards last night.

The comment, "not sure he's all he is cracked up to be". Obviously not a definitive call by any stretch or a criticism of ferball's comment.

In any case, patience is the key.

He is contracted until the end of next year. We will know by then.

Specifically what I meant was - I dunno if he is going to reach my expectations of what he could do. Maybe they are unreasonable.

Although

He kicked 3 goals in his first four games this year, including two bags of 0.

Since then he has kicked 7 goals in 3 games. That is also a good pattern one of improvement over time. And developing consistency.

Kimbo's point is still valid tho.

So far his games haven't been consistent enough. If he develops into a 4 quarter player then he will dominate the game. If not then it'll be a bit disappointing. But if he averages 2 goals a game for his career and plays strong last quarters in a similar way then he'll still be pretty bloody good and give us plenty.

I noticed yesterday that he tried to run all over the place but struggled a bit. So hopefully that is the fitness thing taking its toll and will be something he can overcome after a string of 15+ games and a few preseasons to come.

So yeah patience ...

And to be clear I was talking about Wood not Garner.

Although...

Garner hasn't played as well since he's been back from his rest.

He may be playing a different role. He's got less of the ball and a lot less marks but kicked more goals and brought as much pressure.

His last 2 weeks have been pretty average and would have been considered bad compared to his first few games if he hadn't kicked 3 against Carlton and topped our goal kicking.

This was the original problem with Wood and one of the reasons why he was sitting in the VFL last year. Hadnt been doing enough and drifts in and out of games but hasnt even reached 50 games to be critical yet, just bringing it up. Not playing 4 qtrs was his original problem. His defensive game has improved but still needs work.....but having said that didnt lay a bloody tackle on the weekend.

Before this season his career high was 16 disposals, and he's now had 2-3 over 20. Averaging 15 is a step up and ok for now considering he doesn't run through the midfield much. Continuity's done him good, despite being ordinary this week.

Has played less than 30 games.

Almost everyone was bad and the delivery was horrible.
Mate iam not commenting on others skills, this is the TG thread, and as for delivery one of the passes was pretty much lace out. also you would think that with limited running over the last 3 years due to his hammies the bloke would have plenty of time to be handling a ball, just sayin.

I was not disagreeing with your post and we were all disappointed with his game, he even looked slow at times if I was to add to the criticisms. He did drop an easy mark or two, but the service was below average most of the night.

My original point was in relation to the consistency, that he needs more games pumped into him before we see any decent level of consistency. Furthermore, he was not aided by others, but he also did not help himself.

Agree with the notion that Taylor gets a game each week unless in a consistently poor run of form or hampered by injury.
No doubt.

Probably in the top few talent wise in the list as well as ability to have impact on the game.

His three lowest disposal games have netted 6 goals as well. I think that's a good indication that he's finding a way to impact games more often.
