Looks like Fox called yesterdays Stars v Thunder at the MCG from their studio (looked like Melbourne studio)

I don’t understand why they don’t go the ground if they are already in Melbourne

Cost of the technical setup at the ground I guess. It's makes for really poor coverage.

I like Dave Culberts quote when he said, I commentated four Winter Olympics and never seen snow besides through the TV monitor.

It's definetley more obvious with Cricket though.

Fox calling the marvel game from studio. Surprisingly it’s been 7 who put more effort during the finals series by having their commentary team at the grounds 0254BD5A-7009-4B93-AA36-9BE00548137B.png

7 have done a number of games from a studio and had some commentators (Jason Richardson) getting caught out too. Sadly, Fox have done two finals from a studio and had Howie look pretty silly for one dismissal in the process.

The NBL started this off in 2019/20 (ie before COVID) by calling all games from a studio (except Breakers games, where Sky Sport in New Zealand still kept the courtside commentary).

The past 12 months it's been ridiculous how many games have unnecessarily been called from a studio, across a variety of sports and a variety of networks.

This competition is over as far as I'm concerned. And it's Seven, hands down.

Between Fox calling games from the studio, hiring blokes that can't speak like D Warner, and the constant exposure to blokes like Brendon Julian, Brett Lee, Brad Haddin (among others) Fox Cricket is going down the same path as Ch. 9 in its last days (wonder why) of becoming a boys club who treat the viewer as an idiot.

they gave us Kath and Isa in the same room. that's real effort!

Fox studio is in Sydney though isn't it? Most of their callers are from Sydney as well, surely they'll be at the final

It took me a long time to cotton on to the fact Adam Peacock was commentating on US Open tennis matches from Australia :embarrassedv1:

I liked Damo kicking the boots into TV broadcasts from a studio, but not radio. Radio calling from a studio is ok because the idiots listening have no idea what is actually happening.

I guess until there is better clarification regarding travel it is safe whilst not better for commentators to be in one place. Would be rather embarassing if a game couldn't be commentated on because the commentators were stuck due to cancelled flights.

Lets not forget the climate change arguments that would be break out over travel too.

This post is about both networks coverage of test cricket. Their BBL coverage is a much of a muchness. Both do too many games from a studio for my liking and the commentary is all talk, talk, talk but that's the way it is with T20 coverage.

In terms of test cricket coverage, Fox have the bells and whistles but I like 7's simplicity. On the commentary front, Fox arguably have the bigger names but I prefer 7's commentary. There's a greater willingness on 7's test cricket coverage to let the cricket breathe whereas Fox is all talk largely.

Skull and Huss would add to 7 but I don't think anybody else from Fox would improve 7 that much. I like Isa Guha and Ian Smith as ball by ball callers but 7 already have 4 solid ball by ball callers in Tim Lane, Alison Mitchell, James Brayshaw (who I'm changing my opinion on) and Alister Nicholson who did part of the Sydney test.

If you think Justin Langer loves the sound of his own voice, wait until you hear Kevin Pietersen on SuperSport's coverage of the SA20 and ODI's between South Africa and England. The man could say 5000 words in one commentary stint if you asked him to!

I think ball by ball callers are who 7 are lacking in.

Especially for BBL they have just Brayshaw, Richardson, Nicholson & Maher since Mitchell & Lane are Test exclusive. And during the tests it’s just 3.

Fox has around 6 main callers (Gilchrist, Guha, Howard, Smith, Jones (mostly WBBL/BBL), Julian) , who do both & this season had about 3-4 back up callers like Hudson, Speed & Ginnane.

Wish the 7 app would stay with footage of the cricket, even without comms, instead of displaying a graphic stating they’re in an add break

their approach to the ads was kind of bizarre too. Advertising shows that were canceled in 2019 after one season? Or trailers for Law and Order when Chris Noth was on the show? Like why even bother.

they are promoting 7+ and the number of shows they have.
