From what the OP has said, he's talking about getting an additional high draft pick for Wells -in addition to those held by NM at the time so you would still have got Atley and Harper but also got Gaff. I may have this wrong though as I did not see the JC tweet.

I'm going to go against the tide here, I would have done the deal if the trade was Wells for pick 4 and another pick 20- 30s but no less.

Look at the Judd trade, started looking good but haas now began to stink. The Croad trade, The Headland trade all trades of players for picks that have stunk. The best example is perhaps Wells himself who NM got the right to pick for as a result of the trade of Carey to the Crows where he played 20 odd games.

You probably would have got Wells back 3 years later in any event and you still might lose Wells in any event in free agency for much less than number 4 pick.

Cannot wait for the thunderstorm to hit............

As an aside, given how high we rated Atley and how we thought he was no chance of slipping to our pick, we may well have taken him with number 4 anyway/

Lucky we didn't as wells is a unique player in our team, speed/skill something we lack.

He will be, now. He had family issues at the time and he felt like he wasn't getting the most out of himself as a footballer, not sure about the family thing but he has taken his footy to a new level. I hope the family thing is in a better place.

However, he should put family first. If he feels he needs to go back to WA for family reasons then I accept that.

Actually I was wrong about the Carey trade. NM traded Carey to Adelaide for then pick 3 - which, because Carlton had been found guilty of pigr--ting the salary cap courtesy of Stephen O'Reilly, became pick 2 of the 2002 draft (which was the Wells pick) - and pick 18 which NM blew on Kris Shore.

Ah good times, Carlton getting stripped of picks, NM getting Wells and Carey playing only a few games for the Crows.

But it does show you the perils of giving up top 5 picks.

We had Harper penned as our first pick as we didn't see any way Atley fell out of the top ten. So it's likely we still would have taken Atley at four, and Harper with our own first rounder.

We are very, very lucky to have someone of the quality of Wells at the club, on and off the field. Will play 300 and go down as one of the best ever at North.
