If round 1 played on 1 - 4 - 2013 we have 8 current players who will be over 30 years old

  1. Gilbee DOB 08/07/1981
  2. Hargrave DOB 26/07/1981
  3. Lake DOB 27/02/1982
  4. Giansiracusa DOB 11/03/1982
  5. Murphy DOB 09/06/1982
  6. Boyd DOB 27/08/1982
  7. Morris DOB 29/12/1982
  8. Cross DOB 30/03/1983
We then have a clear 2 year gap before the next group of players
  1. Minson DOB 11/04/1985
  2. Cooney DOB 30/09/1985
  3. Moles DOB 07/11/1985

And then we have a pile of kids barely 20 years old. You need a good mix of ages in the team. Do you expect everyone to be dropped on their 30th birthday?

Not all of them but I don't expect 8 of them to be on our list Round 1 2013

If round 1 played on 1 - 4 - 2013 we have 8 current players who will be over 30 years old

  1. Gilbee DOB 08/07/1981 won't be on the list in 2013
  2. Hargrave DOB 26/07/1981 good chance he will be gone, or offered one more year
  3. Lake DOB 27/02/1982 still good
  4. Giansiracusa DOB 11/03/1982 one more year of contract and then I expect he will retire
  5. Murphy DOB 09/06/1982 still one of our best every week
  6. Boyd DOB 27/08/1982 still got a couple of years in him
  7. Morris DOB 29/12/1982 still to see how he recovers from that broken leg, may retire first
  8. Cross DOB 30/03/1983 fearless at the ball, the younger players could learn a lot from him, another couple of years I think
We then have a clear 2 year gap before the next group of players

  1. Minson DOB 11/04/1985
  2. Cooney DOB 30/09/1985
  3. Moles DOB 07/11/1985 highly likely he will be gone

On average you'd expect players to be about 5-10% off their playing peak after they turn 30.

Without malice (and with gratitude for years of service) I hope 2-3 of them end their AFL career this year and I hope like crazy that some of our younger/fringe players and rookies really come on in a hurry (like Tutt, Pearce, Djitti, Hill, JJ, Howard, Talia, Roberts, Panos, Roughead, Cordy, Jones, etc)

At some stage 2 of those 8 players will be chosen to go on the Veteran list for salary cap exemption

At this stage I would guess Boyd and Murphy

Cross
Boyd
Lake
Murphy will be kepted at the end of the year.
Sorry Hargrave and Gilbee, time to look for the future.

Gia to become co-forward coach

Morris, given another year to see how he goes after his injury.

Don't get too hung up on one age group. We need to have balanced list. I suspect we'll only have 5 or 6 tops age 30 plus next year anyway. You need to have a good group of veterans on the list.

The key for me....this year is making sure we play more kids.....JJ and Panos must be close now.....Time to see what everyone can offer.....within reason of course....not all the kids are ready.

Gilbee and Hargrave will not be a huge loss and I would expect they both retire at years end, mainly to avoid us having too many guys go out at once.

On the plus side aswell, once this group retires, due to our lack of 25 - 27 year olds, it will be a long time before we have a massive group of players nearing the end like this again.

Got the feeling that only 2 of the 30+ players will be gone by next season
Most likely Gilbee and hargrave
Pretty positive gia will be given a year which will almost certainly be his last?
Morris depending on his leg I would think will be back
Cross murphy lake and Boyd won't be going anywhere and these four guys can be a massie key to our future
Why because they set a great example for our young guys going forward.

I must say sometimes i get frustrated watching Cross as he is slow and can't kick over a jam tin, but by god he puts his body on the line every week. It is clear we are not going to challenge at all next year, so it is probably worth keeping him to teach the youngsters how to get the most out of themselves, from all accounts there is no one more professional at the club. Gilbee and Hargrave have to go, i would have preferred one more, but not sure who, it is a tough call but looking at that list barring Morris as he is an unknown, if they had to make a tough call it would be gia or Cross, but i think they will give them one more year each.
