I wouldn't bother trying to find an "out" clause for him. He should plead guilty and cop whatever they give him.

His defence:

"I was only following the coaches instructions - honest Guv."

Club officials roll out video tapes of Laidley's past 2 post match press conferences.

Laidley's instructions: "I want our blokes to hurt some bodies and play angry football"

That's his out clause - but doubt they'd use it in an attempt to get a discount.

A 4 week holiday is my guess, based on the theory it was worse that Fleming's hit last week, but in the same ball park as Bickley from last year. His clean record should see him get a 1 week discount. 5 games would be the maximum - depending if they use the Wizard cup in his suspension.

If no injuries sustained by Piccione - 3 weeks would've a fair whack.

Now I know it was a really bad incedent for football and he does deserve 2-3 weeks, but he is really getting way too much media attention over this.

Hawks fans will disagree and I know Lance was badly injured from the incedent, but if I recall Round 12 vs Essendon, Dean Rioli hit Adam Simpson to the head 50 metres off the ball. Now that was given 3 weeks as he deserved, and I know Simpson didnt miss football due to injury, but according to the media Rioli got off very lightly compared to Sinclair.

Now is this because we dont expect Sinkers to do such an act but is almost characteristic of Rioli? I don't know, but we'll see...

I heard some bloke on the radio this afternoon demanding no less than 15 weeks! Must have been his Dad.

I loved hearing from all the SInclair 'experts' at work this morning. Yet again (aka Carey affair) I was supposed to be responsible for someone's actions that I watch, but dont even know. Strange thing footy fans.

Anyone else cop it?

This hole incident has been ridiculously analysed.

If Picciaone hadn't have copped such a nasty injury, there wouldnt be half the hoopla about it.

And yeah Gaso, the number of people, both in person and over email today who all of a sudden are experts that i've had telling me all about it has been ludicrous. Funny how when i attempt to discuss it in depth, they have little idea of how to respond. Bit that would involve perhaps actually seeing the incident hey?

OK, it looked bad from the 5 different angles and played at slow motion speed. But if you really look at it, Picciaone runs at Jess. No, Jess shouldnt have stuck the arm up and will justifiably get a few weeks off, but it wasnt like it was a pre-meditated, intentional attempt from Jess to smash this bloke's head in. It was a split-second reaction from a bloke chasing an opponent and with a player charging at him.

If anything, Stevo's is worse.

Totally agree......and for that matter, the intent of Richard Vandenberg....he sought out Jess after the incident, lucky for him tho he misssed the target...

Nothing wrong with what Richard Vandenberg did. I am sure there would have been a north player that would have done the same if it was the opposite happen

yep,in footy terms,Stevo's was the worse of the two. A round arm hay maker to the head from behind, unprovoked, unwarranted, uneverything. He'll probably only get 2 as Holland was more shocked than hurt.
Jess will go for recklessness ,and rightly so, but you'd be excused for thinking Lance was deliberately lined up and half killed (as it turns out he may only miss a week). Didn't have to put up with too much bs as admitted guilt but was across all the details which nobody else was.
Listened to 3AW's breakfast show with Hawk supporter Ross"the umpires crucified us" Stevenson and when his sports commentator Jon Anderson of the Hun said "probably 5 weeks" Stevenson said "you're kidding,is that all!" 5 games would be very harsh in my opinion.

As a Hawks fan, I have always had a healthy respect for both Stevens and Sinclair, I still do. For some reason these things happen, players do things on the spur of the moment and 2 seconds later they are wondering why they did it.
When Sinclair was at Fremantle, I once said to a mate that he was a good player but has an unfortunate habit of jumping in the air when in a contest, and that one day he may accidentally hurt someone. Unfortunately that has happened, and I am sure Jess feels repentant about the whole affair.
As for Stevens, it reminds me of when Leigh Matthews struck Bruns from Geelong. Matthews said later, "The moment I hit him I asked myself ... what did I do that for?". I am sure Stevens thought the same thing.
Neither Sinclair nor Stevens have a record of being involved in these incidents so I am quite willing to forgive and forget, although having said that I feel it necessary that both players get some kind of penalty.

Read an article today where Jess rang Picione to appologise and that Picione's mum said she accepted Jess's appology but he should still go for 2-3 weeks.

Good to see that she is not going over the top - couldn't blame her if she did tho'.

all good points, and yes i had the same problem explaining to others. I explained he jumped, and picione was running at him etc etc but it wouldn't get through. I also agree stevo's was worse, but ah well, looks like he's going to cop it and get on with next season. As for vandenberg, I don't question his loyalty, but if you look at his attempt to deck sinclair, he also had his arm raised, it's just lucky for sinclair that he missed. You could see the poor bloke though, he looked absolutely shattered after what he'd done, and I have no doubts as well that if the injuries hadn't been as bad as they were this would have blown over. I just hope this doesn't have a negative affect on his career when he resumes after his holiday.

Jess is a ball player, I just wish everyone else would understand that. And god it got me all crazy hearing Walls and co. giving him sh*t saying that was "low" "dispicable""disgraceful" as if he bloody intentionally came out there with a freaking baseball bat and clobbered him over the head! Why don't they say that for Rioli or Fleming, if Riewoldt or Simpson came off the field with a broken jaw and blood gushing out of their skulls?!?!

Sinclair made a mistake: Laidley
5:41:04 PM Mon 18 August, 2003
Matt Burgan

Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley believes that it would be ‘drawing a long bow’ to argue that Jess Sinclair’s controversial clash with Hawthorn’s Lance Picioane at Telstra Dome on Saturday night was prompted by Laidley’s call for his players to play ‘angry’ football.

Speaking before the Kangaroos’ training session on Monday, Laidley said Sinclair – who was booked on video evidence for striking Picioane – had made a mistake.

“There’s no question about it. In a split second he’s made the wrong decision, which we all have to live with,” Laidley said.

“Certainly, we don’t condone what Jess has done, but he’s been labeled a vicious (person). There is not a malice bone in Jess Sinclair’s body. People have got to understand that.”

“We all make mistakes and unfortunately at that split second, that’s what happened and we certainly feel for Lance Picioane.”

Laidley added that Sinclair was distraught about the incident and that his ‘first and foremost’ thoughts were for Picioane’s welfare.

“All I know is that Jess took off down the coast yesterday and has been in my office this morning and (he’s been) nearly in tears. He’s already spoken to Lance and I don’t know what happened in the conversation, but…he’s feeling pretty ordinary at the moment,” Laidley said.

“You don’t want anyone to see that happen on the field, regardless of who it is. Now he gets puts under that scrutiny and the people that have known him since he’s been at this football club know the man and the person that he is.”

Laidley said it was important that both players were given the support that they needed under the circumstances.

“We all make mistakes and as big as that is, we need to make sure we support him and support Lance because we don’t want to see – as I’ve said already – that happen in football and we’ve got to make sure he gets through this and comes out the other side,” Laidley said.

“It’s going to be very important because he’s (Sinclair) a terrific (person) – well they both are. And you’ve got to make sure that Lance comes out of it OK and so does Jess.”

“It’s happened. It’s unfortunate and I don’t know what else we can do.”

Asked if he would continue to send the play ‘angry’ message to his players, Laidley said: “Maybe if we take the word anger out or angry. I still said on Saturday night - Yeah we want to play hard, tough footy and you can’t get away from that.”

“But we certainly don’t want Jess Sinclair incidents happening – absolutely not.”

“We still need to play tough hard aggressive football and completely within the laws of the game as a (former) player and I will never, ever, ever tell them to go outside the laws of the game.”

Meanwhile, Laidley said Kangaroos’ captain Anthony Stevens and vice-captain Glenn Archer were ‘absolutely’ required players next year.

That is probably the sanest interview Laidley has ever had.

Picioane came out of that contest in a bad way, but Jess seems to have come out in a bad way as well:(

Horrid incident.

Go Roos

Whoever asked him otherwise must be brave - considering the way Laidley has been in some interviews this year..

Any of the above mentioned hacks could've asked such a dumb question!

I have to say that for this one I actually feel for Jess, usually it makes me sick and angry when a North player does something ridiculous and dirty.
In this case I think Jess made a not so great decision with about one second to think and someone running at his body...
Like you say, if he wasn't hurt so bad...

People keep saying "If he didn't get injured like he did, people wouldn't make such a fuss" and that "the injury will contribute to the penalty"... Well im sorry boys, but that is just stupid talk!

I say this because if Jess hadn't have hit him so hard with the point of the elbow, then it would have resulted in a less severe injury... this would have meant that the hit wasn't as vicious, meaning that the hit wouldn't have been, or looked, as bad as it is.

He did cause severe damage to Lance, which obviously means that if was a very dangerous hit...

As much as I love Jess as a player, he deserves whatever punishment is handed down... fleming got 3 weeks, so sinkers should get 5

Sinclair deserves 4 to 6, i think you need to look at the incident again, sinclair was beaten one on one, he chased and was frustrated anyone who has played footy knows that feeling, as he is chasing Picione comes to give a shepherd, which is more like a block than a shirtfront. Sinclair see this and instead of just bumping in to Lance he jumps, straight away his intention has gone from the chasing player to Lance, his intent is to get the better of the bump, in his frutration sinclair does not just hang the elbow out to dry, but viciously swings his elbow through the air and connects with picioane, i am a fan of sinclair, but this is the case of frustrated footballer doing some very cowardly that if he could take back again he would, jess sinclair 4-6, i rate this up there with the Lockett on Caven and the bloke Ablett hit in the pocket that day whilst on the lead.

Hmmm,I think he will get 4-6 games because that seems to be what the media's demanding. A biomechanical expert would be interesting( but I don't think we'll bother !) as this term, which I've heard a bit,"viciously swinging" could be proven to be illusory, meaning that Jess' attempt to,as you say,"get the better of the bump" (and nothing wrong with that) made his elbow movement involuntary. It was interesting to see Picioane's own little indiscretion against Lonie tonight. Elbow up,feet off the ground, ran directly at the opponent in a very crude shepherd but no real damage done ,more out of luck than design-2 weeks. It's the injury rather than the incident itself that will cost him 4-6 games.

I agree Carlos, but then I suppose I am biased.

The angle I saw on the replay showed Piccioane running at Jess. Jess was airborne and lifted his arm. In my opinion it was an instinctive, reflex action, done as much as anything else as a means of self preservation. Had I been in the same situation (a rather fanciful thought I must say) I rather suspect I would have reacted in a very similar manner.

Self perservation is a very powerful instinct. Jess had a split second to react. I very much doubt that he had time to think, sh**, I am going to hurt this bloke, I had better tuck the arm in and hope I don't get poleaxed.

The bit that is really getting to me is the perception that the Kangaroos went out on Saturday night head hunting at the instruction of Laidley. Some Hawthorn idiot got onto Sports tonight on 3AW and stated that the Kangaroos were feral. What absolute rubbish. In my opinion it was a pretty tame sort of a game, certainly not spiteful as some would have it.

Interesting too that no-one has mentioned Spider Everett launching himself at Arch in the last quarter and nearly kneeing him into the goal post. That looked a bit feral to me as a matter of fact.

The attention it is getting is over the top!! the Age this morning had about four articles devoted to it. I ll admit I am paranoid - but I am sure the "shocked" media would have a different and more measured opinion if it had have been an Essendon or Collingwood player. The only people who are reacting reasonably about the whole thing are the Picione family who are being so reasonable it is almost unbelievable!

Spider Everitt was pretty cool about it on Talking Footy he said - it was just a good hard game - he laughed off the Archer incident saying him and Arch get on really well together and had a laugh about it after the siren.
