I must have missed that, have you got a link to LDU saying he’s waiting to see improvement before he signs?
Even if he did say that, it would be a weird statement considering he’s one of our senior players that should be responsible for our performance.
I think it was from his manager Robbie D'Orazio.

In which case of course he's going to say that to drum up the interest in his client, knowing full well he'll be signing eventually.

Of course. He'd be aware of other offers and is trying to get the best result for his client.
And from memory that's what Cam's manager said as well, so it's all a bit of a game until it's signed.

Yep. And for him personally lol. Don't the agents get a bit of a commission for their clients to sign on?

Also possible, but I don’t think the club would put external pressure on him to sign. Just my take, I have no idea.

But I have spoken to journalists in the past that have talked about the give and take with both managers and clubs.
Looks like Cal and I are on the same page. Be interesting to see what LDU says when he is inevitably asked about it.

Yep I'm backing you in. You are the oracle. You were right about George's hamstring being 10-12 weeks.
We've made the offer and now it's over to LDU.

It pains me to say it, with full awareness that the ship has well and truly sailed, but I agree with the cornhole on this topic. 7 year deals are terrible for clubs. What are we up to now, 9 year deals?

I don’t think we’ve seen one work for a club yet. Particularly in light of the fact clubs have so little bargaining power over trading players in contract. Plus, and this is the big one, clubs essentially make **** all from a marketing perspective of having ‘franchise’ players. The AFL controls 99% of marketing revenue. It makes no sense.

It's because clubs are willing to have a half cooked bloke on the books earning heaps for a couple of years, if they get that game winning top tier player locked in for the 5 best years of their career while the club is (hopefully) in their window. And if the club who already has the player doesn't want to offer that, another club will, so then they have a decision to make.

I understand that, but the only one we’ve really got to experience the back end of their career on a long term mega deal is Buddy - an absolute hands-down all-time great. And I still don’t think it really worked out in the Swan’s best interests.

I think the first club to implement the strategy of big dollar 3/4 year contracts to star players will win out in the long run.

I think it'll take a club that just says "we don't hand out more than 5 year contracts" and is prepared to lose those players in a trade or the league steps in and says 5 years is the max contract.

The fixture for first 10 weeks is quite tough. We’ll all find out including LDU whether we’ve improved much by then
I reckon we would need to be 3-7 at worst by r10 and competitive in most losses by then to feel good about him signing.
The bookies have us over under win season at 5.5
I don’t have any problem at all with him waiting to see if we have improved. With all our young talent it’s time to get a few wins otherwise we get what we deserve

Gees 7 years is too long for my liking. Would have been happy for 5 years at 1.3M a year. If he didn't take that then fair enough, trade hard

If its true that he's being offered between 8-9 million over 7 years and he doesn't jump at it then he can leave and go to another club for all l care. Offering him 5 years would have been trumped and may have him feeling insulted, similar to other times players have left because of cheap contracts put to them.

Well, he isn't up for trade; we get free agency compensation.

Let's say we finish 16th next year. Would you take pick four next year or LDU for 7 years on 1mill plus a year?

7 years? Too long, whats Kane think? 2024 was the first year he had real continuity. He’s had hamstring issues out the wahzoo… why not 4 or 5 years on larger coin?

It's a free agency contract, these ones are generally considered the big career one and see out players careers.

Kane is pretty good with those, tends to save his issues for younger players or injury prone players getting long deals.
