I agree with your sentiment,... this is a great crowd, especially given the circumstances of a hasty move to a regional centre.
However, a quick look up of the NRL attendances for 2010 reveals that only one game with a sub-7000 crowd (Sydney v North Queensland). However, you were right to say that it is close to what the AFL gets regionally: they pulled in 8848 in one match in Darwin this year.
the standard of the league is not that bad
i mean we arent the EPL, Serie a, La Liga, or the Bundesliga, but the league does stand up to leagues such as the ones in Asia, the Qatari league etc etc
also who really wants to play in Qatar? its 50 degrees out there, and they play every game at night
Interesting to see that Victory are averaging higher crowds than NRL finalists Manly-Warringah, Canberra and... *drum roll* H&A runner-up Penrith.
Very happy with Victory's crowds in that context.
Since it was a 2-for-1, the official crowd is the same as for the Sydney match. But you're right, we won't know the true crowd.
I dont see the context, its a different state, different sporting culture, different sport etc, not even comparable.
The victory's crowds would be one of the most concerning because there is really no reason for them to be dropping, on field they have been successful, they would be one of the most attractive teams to watch and they have a new stadium to play in but they keep on dropping.
Approx. 7000 listed for Port Mac. Watch this space to see if we get more definite.

You're right, they're not comparable.
Whereas the NRL clubs have decades of history and a geographical base,. Victory have started from scratch in a hostile environment.
So yeah, they're not comparable. Victory's kicking the shit out of the NRL.
Except for the addition of another side in the city.
The Fury have an average crowd this year of 5,487. And they don't have an owner. If they're setting a benchmark for anything, it's a really sad state of affairs.Ive seen the stands look emptier at Etihad and seen 20,000+ pop up on the screen. I agree with Simon Hill in the matter that the number didnt seem right. There was more than the Sydney game that was for sure and a lot of people are saying that it didnt look right.
I have to say im getting a very strong soft spot for the fury. To think the FFA are thinking of cutting this side. Watched the full game and this is a team that plays with the heart of there sleave. The great atmosphere and to see all those Families pack out the hills behind the goals was great and what this league needs. Green fills the stands, Its great for the league. I think Fury has been the bench mark in the 3 expantion clubs. Sunday twilight games or Saturday nights would be great time slots for them.
except for the addition of another side in the city.

Add the heart's 9,802 average and that takes it to approximately 25k, which is above the averages of the last 2 seasons. Still a pitiful effort for a city of 4-5 million people.

Predictions for Round 12:
Victory v Adelaide: 15000
Double header: 12000
Jets v Heart: 5000
Fury v GCU: 5000
Pheonix v Roar: 8000
Glory v Heart: 8000
What does everybody else think?
i forgot where i read it, but tony sage said he is expecting Perth's worst ever crowd for the Wednesday night match against the Heart
No one has said that last bit you've added on there about blaming the victory, it was just noticeable that the victory supporter base was slipping in recent seasons despite there being no good reason for it to be.
Oh and 25k out of 4 million is terrible, you’re effectively saying that the whole professional Australian soccer industry in victoria has as much interest as a kangaroos or western bulldogs (ie bugger all).
Attendances are probably dropping because, well, people in Melbourne aren't really that interested in soccer.
Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely game and can be great to watch. But, the A-League isn't really an attractive standard for casual interests.
Combined with the shit weather, Melbourne's terrible roads and public transport system, the schedule the A league runs on and the lack of free to air exposure or relevant advertising, aside from the fanatics, people just can't get excited about it. Then you have certain supporters who, to put it bluntly, act like giant dicks and make it so parents don't feel comfortable taking the family or their kids out.
I used to make it to every Victory game I could, but now it has just lost it's appeal to me. That's just how it is for me and the group of 20-odd blokes I used to go to games with. I'm not sure if other people in Melbourne feel the same or people in other cities, but that's just my 2 cents.
